Which team members did you meet?Blind3 schreef:Just attended a meet the team party for the Philadelphia Union last night. Professional football returns to the banks of the Delaware River !! Can't wait to take my place in the River End of our new, currently under construction, 18,500 seater ground with my fellow Sons of Ben (SoBs...very Philly) . The SoBs are the Union Supporters group. I'm greatly looking forward to the I-95 rivalries v. DC United, Red Bull New York , and NE Revolution , not to mention many roadtrips in the US and Canada.

Don't get too excited about the U.S chances, doubt they will go through. Russian's were also delighted when they got Slovenia but look how that ended.mako schreef:World Cup draw!
U.S. comes out about as well as they could have hoped, I think: in Group C, with England, Slovenia, and Algiers.
Netherlands in Group E, with Denmark, Japan, and Cameroon.
Re: General Football Discussion
I met Alejandro Moreno , Sebastian LeToux, Nick Zimmerman, Andrew Jacobson, Jordan Harvey, Chris Seitz, and Shavar Thomas. Plus our coaches, Piotr Nowak , John Hackworth, and Josh Gros. All really down to earth and approachable.

Re: General Football Discussion
You did pick up some decent players in the draft. Nowak is a solid manager and will get the best out of the players. Josh Gros was a standout on our team DC United but had to retire because of concussions. Seitz is a prospective NT keeper. Maybe DC and Philly can start a good rivalry!!!Blind3 schreef:I met Alejandro Moreno , Sebastian LeToux, Nick Zimmerman, Andrew Jacobson, Jordan Harvey, Chris Seitz, and Shavar Thomas. Likewise Spain was probably pretty excited to be facing the U.S. in the Confederations Cup semis, and look how that ended.Jojo schreef:Don't get too excited about the U.S chances, doubt they will go through. England seems to be celebrating the advancement pre handedly. I'm personally not that optimistic, eventhough they are clearly favorites in their group. But they will get a mouthful against USA, and I think Slovenia is tougher than they appear. I don't even underestimate Algeria.

RE : MLS Rivalries, Philly vs. DC United, Red Bull (Pink Cow ) New York , and the New England Revolution ...the Interstate 95 rivalries are ready made. Easy to get too . Even New England is only five to six hours or so from Philly . Seattle v. Portland and Seattle v. Vancouver should be great too.

Win a game and we are the best in the world. Lose and we are a disgrace.
I think we will win the group and then get knocked out in the quater finals or semi's at best. As usual.

A funny article on a blog from a Dutch writer about a number of ex-Ajax people (the English in the translation has a few errors, but I forgive him).

Re: General Football Discussion
Here is an interesting perspective on Barcelona and features some words of wisdom from the omnipresent JC: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/feature?id ... pe&cc=5901 It points out something that we pretty much all know, we miss the critical player in the midfield who can get the job done on offense. Since Sneijder left, a number of players have been tried and found wanting. Until we get better ball movement in the mid field I'm afraid our hopes of glory are ill-founded.

The game: Vitoria Setubal vs União Leiria (Portugal).
The scorer: Przemyslaw Kazmierczak (no, I didn't sit down on my keyboard here; that's his name).

Re: General Football Discussion
I probably should have posted the discussion of UEFA league finances to this section rather than the Random Post section yesterday. At any rate the full UEFA report is now available at: http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Dow ... WNLOAD.pdf It's a 12 MB file because of all the color and graphics (only 80 pages in length). It points out that the three most debt ridden leagues are England, Spain and Italy (no surprises there). Our league is in pretty good shape.

Re: General Football Discussion
Firstly thanks for the link.
One thing that should be noted that the above mentioned UEFA report is based upon financial statements for year 2008. it is going to look one hell of a lot worse for 2009, especially considering Real Madrids spending and the recession hitting across Europe

Re: General Football Discussion
Correct, it was noted in an article yesterday that the English data does not include the current Portsmouth debacle or the West Ham problems which do make things much worse.jamcocteau schreef:Firstly thanks for the link.
