EclipseJet uitgeschakeld na zwakke tweede helft

AMSTERDAM - EclipseJet Amsterdam is donderdagavond in eigen huis uitgeschakeld voor verdere deelname aan de EuroChallenge. In de met ruim 2.000 toeschouwers gevulde Sporthallen Zuid was het Cypriotische Proteas EKA AEL met 72-83 te sterk. Doordat de eerste wedstrijd op Cyprus met nagenoeg dezelfde cijfers (82-72) door Proteas werd gewonnen is het Europese avontuur voorbij voor de regerend Nederlands kampioen.

Het mooie Europese seizoen met onder andere indrukwekkende overwinningen in Jeruzalem, Samara en Mons zit er dan ook op voor EclipseJet Amsterdam. Het is extra zuur dat juist in deze fase van de EuroChallenge Peter van Paassen moest afhaken met een blessure. Geen prestigieuze EuroChallenge final four dus voor Arik Shivek en zijn mannen terwijl er op zijn minst toch wel een derde en beslissende ontmoeting op Cyprus in had gezeten voor Amsterdam.

De eerste helft gaat namelijk ruim naar EclipseJet (49-36) onder leiding van captain Teddy Gipson (15 punten) en Avis Wyatt (10 punten). Bij Proteas komt het grootste gevaar van de ervaren Bosniër Harris Mujezinovic die bij de rust al op 17 punten staat, waarvan vijf uit vijf driepunters. Dat twee van zijn succesvolle afstandsbommen noodschoten waren ter voorkoming van een shot clock violation en ook nog eens via het bord binnenvielen deerde hem en zijn ploeggenoten uiteraard niet.

Hoe anders zou de tweede helft verlopen voor de thuisploeg. Als er naar de kille cijfers wordt gekeken kan er geconcludeerd worden dat Amsterdam in de tweede helft met 23-47 werd afgedroogd. Gipson en Wyatt voegen respectievelijk slechts vier en twee punten toe aan hun totaal en zien ook hun ploeggenoten met de grootst mogelijke moeite tot scoren komen. Er wordt zelfs geen enkele driepunter benut en geen moment komt EclipseJet meer tot goed spel.

Als gevolg sluipen de sluwe Cyprioten dichterbij. Via 49-36 wordt het via een steal en een dunk van de verder tegenvallende CC Harrison nog wel 51-36 maar door een 0-9 run staat het een kleine twee minuten later 51-45. Shivek wacht met een time out en Wyatt pakt uit met een dunk op assist van Sergio de Randamie. Proteas is echter niet onder de indruk en plaatst binnen een minuut een 0-5 run wat voor een 53-50 stand halverwege het derde kwart zorgt. Op dat moment besluit Shivek dan toch tot een time out. Amsterdam blijft in het restant van het derde kwart aan de leiding en er begint met een 61-57 voorsprong aan het laatste kwart.

In het laatste kwart gebeurt wat er al aan zat te komen, Proteas komt op voorsprong. Door vijf punten op rij van de Amerikaan Lavelle Blanchard staat het binnen de minuut 61-62. De Amsterdammers gaan vervolgens te geforceerd en gehaast spelen, waardoor de ervaren ploeg van Dragan Rica aan de goede kant van de score blijft. Bovendien heeft de Amerikaan Quincy Taylor zijn beste spel bewaard voor de slotfase. Doordat de scheidsrechters maar liefst 58 persoonlijke fouten zagen (31 voor Amsterdam vs. 27 voor Proteas) is de ploeg met een voorsprong in het voordeel. De bezoekers vallen met een laag tempo aan en zijn voortdurend zoekend naar een persoonlijke fout van een overijverige Amsterdamse verdediger.

Met nog vijf minuten te spelen is de stand 65-70. De enige punten die beide ploegen daarna nog scoren komen voort uit vrije worpen met uitzondering van de een-na-laatste score. Tamien Trent tekent met een knappe drive een veldscore aan. Quincy Taylor brengt met twee vrije worpen, hoe kan het ook anders, de eindstand op 72-83.

Het was al met al een wedstrijd waarin Amsterdam zich van zijn beste en slechtste kant liet zien. De slechte tweede helft woog echter zwaarder dan de goede eerste waardoor de Amsterdammers zich kunnen gaan richten op de twee resterende doelen: prolongatie van de landstitel en sportieve revanche op EiffelTowers Den Bosch in de bekerfinale.

They'll win the title if ...: They don't go cold against Michigan State. The Spartans have won just three games all season in which they allowed more than 70 points. North Carolina has scored less than 70 points just once. Since returning the lineup, Ty Lawson has been even better than he was pre-toe injury. Lawson is averaging 20 ppg and has just six turnovers in four tournament games. Wayne Ellington is playing better than at any other time this season and with no hesitation in his game. Tyler Hansbrough is averaging 21 points and eight rebounds on the season. Danny Green, something of a Swiss Army knife for the Tar Heels, can play at least three positions for extended minutes and has played terrific on-ball defense.


Ty Lawson
Go-to guys: Lawson beat out teammate Tyler Hansbrough for ACC player of the year honors even though Hansbrough led the Tar Heels in scoring in the regular season and will be the first Tar Heel to lead his team in both scoring and rebounding for four consecutive seasons. Lawson scored in double figures and led the league in assists. Danny Green, who played a marvelous "sixth man" role for the last three years, stepped into the starting lineup and gave the Heels instant firepower from 3-point range. He's another double-figure scorer along with Lawson, Hansbrough and Wayne Ellington.

Strengths: The Tar Heels have quickness, one of the best starting fives in the country, and a killer instinct that can lead to big scoring runs if an opponent stumbles at any point in the game. They can shoot the three as well as the two, are relentless on the boards, and are unselfish, ranking second in the country in assists and sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio. They also get to the free-throw line a lot and convert their chances.

Weaknesses: Without the injured Marcus Ginyard, the Heels lack a real shutdown defender on the perimeter and can be vulnerable against a 3-point bombing team. Duke showed that by leading the Heels at halftime of both meetings. Hansbrough, with all his aggressiveness, is a not a particularly strong defender inside. Ginyard's absence also affects depth, though the unexpected return of freshman Tyler Zeller from a wrist injury has helped depth up front. Turnovers have been a problem at times, but not in the tournament, where Lawson has been almost perfect with the ball.

They'll win the title if ...: They take advantage of cozy environs in Detroit, just 90 miles from East Lansing. They didn't do so back in December, when the Tar Heels knocked them around 98-63. Goran Suton did not play that day, and his presence this time around is a significant addition. Michigan State is nearly unbeatable when its wins the rebounding battle. The Spartans outrebounded 20 consecutive opponents to end the regular season -- and three of their five tournament opponents -- compiling a 26-4 record when winning the battle of the boards. Led by Big Ten defensive player of the year Travis Walton (6-2, 190), the Spartans have also been playing terrific perimeter defense. Kansas was 3-of-12 from 3-point distance, Louisville was 6-of-18 and UConn 2-of-6. The Spartans are 19-0 (3-0 in tournament) when scoring 70 or more points and 26-0 (4-0 in tournament) when allowing fewer than 70. Michigan State also went 18-1 when committing less than 15 turnovers.


Kalin Lucas
Go-to guys: Sophomore guard Kalin Lucas (6-0, 180) was named Big Ten player of the year after averaging 16.5 points in league play, boosting his production to 18.0 points per game on the road as the Spartans broke a school record with eight conference road wins. Senior center Goran Suton (6-10, 245) was the first Michigan State player since 1997 to win a league rebounding title, averaging 8.4 boards and 10.0 points in the Big Ten. Junior forward Raymar Morgan (6-8, 225) was slowed by illness, but averaged 12.1 points and 7.9 rebounds in the nine conference games in which he played at least 20 minutes.

Strengths: Big Ten coach of the year Tom Izzo has guided the Spartans to 12 consecutive appearances and a 26-10 record in the NCAA tournament, including a national championship in 2000 and Final Fours in 1999, 2001 and 2005. He did a masterful job this year, winning the Big Ten by four games -- the league's biggest margin since 1985 -- despite injuries and illnesses that forced him to use 14 different starting lineups.

Weaknesses: The Spartans were 2-5 in the regular season when allowing 70 or more points, including lopsided losses against ACC members Maryland (80-62) and North Carolina (98-63). They aren't much of a threat from downtown; through games of March 8, they ranked 260th in Division I with 5.2 3-pointers per game.

DETROIT -- Warm and fuzzy they were not.

For a year, maybe more, North Carolina could feel this national championship coming.

It was a calculated march, and behind the unrelenting play of Tyler Hansbrough, Wayne Ellington and Ty Lawson, the Tar Heels stomped out Michigan State's inspirational run Monday night with an 89-72 blowout that wasn't that close.

"I felt like it was fitting for us to do what this group just accomplished," coach Roy Williams said.

Hansbrough scored 18 points, Ellington had 19 and Lawson led all scorers with 21 and also had a record eight steals. Now, they and Danny Green can all head to the NBA feeling good about their decision to return to school. They're bringing home Carolina's fifth championship, and the second for Williams.

All those upperclassmen, save Hansbrough, came back in part because their draft prospects didn't look so good. They also didn't want their college careers to end on last year's embarrassing loss to Kansas in the Final Four. That was a dud of a game in which they trailed 40-12 in the first half and Billy Packer was telling CBS viewers it was over.

This time, North Carolina led 36-13 around the time "Dancing With The Stars" was starting on another network. At least nobody knew how that one was going to end.

This game, though, was a slam dunk. Ellington got choked up as he basked in the confetti. Williams gave a shout-out to his mentor, Dean Smith, and he almost started crying, too. Hansbrough was the first to grab one of those "National Champion" T-shirts. Nobody worked harder for it than him.

"Sounds like I made a pretty good decision," Hansbrough said. "Nothing beats this feeling right here."

Likewise, it can't feel much worse for the Spartans (31-7). They never had a chance. They had been on an uplifting run, and the final chapter was supposed to be the national championship. It would, the storybook said, bring the definitive ray of sunshine to a city and state that's been battered by an ailing economy.

Instead, the 90-mile ride home to East Lansing will be a quiet one.

"You've got six NBA players that could be drafted in the first round or early second," Spartans guard Travis Walton said. "You're looking at a team that could probably beat the worst team in the NBA."

The Tar Heels (34-4) were up 55-34 at halftime, breaking a 42-year-old title-game record for biggest lead at the break and setting the mark for most points at the half.

By then, Lawson had already set an NCAA title-game record with seven steals.

"When you play North Carolina, there's nothing you can do," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "Lawson says it all. He does stir the drink."

A pretty strong drink.

This collection of NBA talent was too, too much from wire to wire, from the start of the tournament, to the very end.

Carolina won every game by double digits, something that hasn't happened since Duke did it in 2001.

Lots of basketball fans saw this coming, including America's No. 1 Hoopster-in-Chief.

Yes, President Barack Obama picked the Tar Heels to take it all in his much-publicized bracket.

Magic Johnson, Michigan State's Spartan-in-Chief, joined Larry Bird at center court to present the game ball, a tribute to the 30-year anniversary of their historic matchup and Michigan State's first title.

From there, it was pretty much all "Showtime," all the time -- but not for Michigan State. Heck, Magic didn't even stick around for the end. He was spotted walking up the tunnel with 3 1/2 minutes left.

Izzo tried to call a timeout to stop the onslaught with 6:45 left in the first half. His team came out and promptly turned it over -- one of 14 in the first half, compared to only 12 baskets.

Goran Suton led the Spartans with 17 points, and Kalin Lucas, the Big Ten player of the year, had 14 -- most scored once the game was out of hand, which was very early in this one.

Michigan State pulled within 13 a couple times late in the second half, and the crowd of 72,922 -- mostly pulling for the Spartans -- tried to make some noise.

But for most of the game, cavernous Ford Field had the atmosphere of a Lions game, save the few thousand Tar Heel fans whose Carolina Blue team put in a much better blue-collar effort than the team that was supposed to pride itself on that.

"I just don't think we did the things we did all year," Izzo said. "When you say that, you take away some credit from North Carolina, and I don't want to do that. It was a combination of us and them, but we need to take some of the blame."

As for that 98-63 beatdown Carolina put on Michigan State in this same building back on Dec. 3? No fluke. In fact, Detroit might want to give Ford Field a nice, long break. The winless Lions went 0-8 here last season, and there was no halt to the Motor City's misery on this night.

It was, almost literally, over before it began. Ellington had a double-pump scoop layup and a 3-pointer and Hansbrough spotted up and sank a 14-foot jumper -- all in the first 4:25 to put Carolina ahead 17-7. It never got closer.

The Spartans, meanwhile, were having trouble simply getting the ball in after Tar Heel buckets, turning it over that way twice in the first 6 minutes, part of a depressing day that didn't do justice to the effort they put in to get here.

During pregame introductions, Williams walked over to shake hands with Izzo, who was distracted, drawing up a play on the greaseboard in the huddle. He jokingly showed the diagram to Williams -- and you know what: It probably wouldn't have mattered.

Izzo conceded in the lead-up to the game that if both teams played their best, Michigan State would lose. He'll never find out if he was right because, while North Carolina was more than ready, the Spartans never showed up.

"The best team won," Izzo said. "That's an easy statement to make."

Williams joined Jim Calhoun, Billy Donovan and Mike Krzyzewski as the fourth active coach (13th overall) to win multiple titles.

This title came four years after his first championship -- and for the first time, with a roster full of his own recruits.

"Roy Williams is not that good," Williams said. "But boy, ol' Roy's got some big-time players. That's what it takes."

Hansbrough was the only one who knew he wanted to come back from the get-go. He simply loves college, and though his senior season wasn't quite as good as the year before, the ending was much better. Nobody on Michigan State could stop him -- no shame there -- and he had seven rebounds and two assists to go with the 18 points.

"I desperately wanted this championship for that young man," Williams said. "I know it's corny, but that's who I am."

Lawson was often criticized for not looking to shoot enough, and he sort of went back to his roots in this one. He finished only 3-for-10 from the floor but was a dominating presence, with six assists and a whopping 18 trips to the free-throw line.

Oh, and don't forget Ed Davis. We'll be seeing the 6-10 freshman in the pros with these other guys someday soon. He went 5-for-7 for 11 points with eight rebounds in 14 minutes and may have proven all he needs to, as well.

Overall, North Carolina dominated every matchup on the floor in pretty much every way. The Tar Heels were a unanimous No. 1 in the preseason and became the first UNC team to start and finish at No. 1 since 1982.

Michael Jordan was the star of that team.

There may not be any Jordans on this team, but there were plenty of Hansbroughs and Lawsons and Ellingtons -- more than enough to finish off a project that seemed destined to end the way it did: On a ladder in Detroit, with scissors and twine in their hands.

Barcelona joines Final Four!

Just the second fifth game in European competition history featured one team that had battled all season for the homecourt advantage, Regal FC Barcelona, against another with the only two playoff wins without such an advantage all decade, Tau Ceramica. When the dust settled on Thursday, however, home was where the heart remained as Barcelona overwhelmed Tau 78-62 before a sellout crowd to win their best-of-five Quarterfinal Playoff series 3-2. Barcelona advanced to the Final Four in Berlin from May 1 to 3, where it faces defending champion CSKA Moscow in one of the semifinals. Panathinaikos and Olympiacos will meet in the other semifinal. Great early shooting and outstanding defense let Barcelona play ahead from tipoff to buzzer and manage leads that swelled to 21 points, 70-49, in the final quarter. Home-team hero Juan Carlos Navarro sparked the win with 16 first-half points on the way to 19 for the game, while Ersan Ilyasova matched his scoring, pulled down 10 rebounds and dished 4 assists. Jaka Lakovic added 16 points for the winners. Tau got 19 points on 8-for-10 two-point shooting from Tiago Splitter, 14 more from Pete Mickeal and 10 from Igor Rakocevic. The loss snapped Tau's four-year streak of Final Four appearances, while David Andersen became the first player to reach the Final Four with four different teams - Kinder Bologna, Montepaschi Siena, CSKA Moscow and, now, Barcelona.

Brabants Dagblad - Een pak slaag met grote gevolgen. Zo zou de nederlaag (89-63) van de basketballers van EiffelTowers Den Bosch vanavond in Groningen tegen Hanzevast Capitals wel eens uit kunnen pakken.

De Bossche ploeg mocht met 23 punten verliezen om de tweede plaats in de competitie veilig te stellen en daarmee het thuisvoordeel in de halve finales van de play-offs.

En als alles normaal verloopt is Groningen in die halve finale ook weer de tegenstander. Thuisvoordeel voor welke ploeg dan ook in een serie van best-of-five is dan cruciaal omdat het zowel in de Bossche Maaspoorthal als in het Groningse Martiniplaza voor de tegenstander moeilijk winnen is. Door de nederlaag van EiffelTowers tegen rechtstreekse concurrent Hanzevast moet de Bossche ploeg zaterdag in en tegen Leiden winnen om de tweede plaats en dus het thuisvoordeel te behouden. De Groningers gaan zaterdag in de laatste wedstrijd van de reguliere competitie 0p bezoek bij nummer vier Bergen op Zoom.

AMSTERDAM - Vorige week werd het investeringsbedrijf van Roel Pieper failliet verklaard. De zoveelste flop van de oud-Philips bestuurder.

Drie grote faillissementen in het afgelopen half jaar. Roel Pieper heeft weinig geluk met de bedrijven die hij leidt of waarin hij investeert. Nu gooit hij de handdoek in de ring.

Eind vorig jaar vroeg de maker van navigatiekastjes Myguide faillissement aan. Met dit Duitse bedrijf wilde Pieper de strijd aangaan met het Nederlandse TomTom. Pieper was de belangrijkste investeerder in Myguide.

Vrijwel tegelijkertijd stapelden de problemen zich op bij Eclipse Aviation uit het Amerikaanse Albuquerque. Pieper had net 100 miljoen euro in deze vliegtuigbouwer geïnvesteerd.

Om er zeker van te zijn dat zijn geld goed werd besteed, werd hij zelf directeur. Het mocht niet baten. Eind november 2008 moest het bedrijf surseance van betaling aanvragen, begin vorige maand werd het faillissement uitgesproken. Eclipse laat een schuld van een miljard dollar achter.

En vorige week was het de beurt aan zijn eigen investeringsmaatschappij ETIRC (European Technology & Investment Research Center) uit Haarlem.

Het in 2004 opgerichte fonds investeerde geld in Russische, Amerikaanse en Turkse technologiebedrijven. Dit gebeurde met geld van Pieper zelf, maar ook met fondsen van andere investeerders.

Een van de bedrijven waarin Pieper investeerde was Eclipse, de vliegtuigbouwer uit Albuquerque.

Daarnaast belegde Pieper met ETIRC ook tientallen miljoenen euro’s in een Russische technologie om van bruinkool dieselbrandstof te maken. Hoe het met dit project staat, is niet bekend. Wel ontving Pieper in 2007 de RusPrix van de Russische Federatie voor zijn werk als ondernemer in het land.

Hoe groot de schulden van ETIRC zijn, wordt nu onderzocht door curator J. Frans. Maar volgens hem is nu al duidelijk dat sprake is van een ‘heel behoorlijke schuldenpositie’.

Het kapitaal dat Roel Pieper afgelopen maanden als sneeuw voor de zon zag verdwijnen, vergaarde hij vooral in de jaren negentig. Als CEO van grote Amerikaanse technologiebedrijven zoals Unix en Tandem Computers sleepte hij een fortuin binnen aan salaris, bonussen en aandelenopties.

In 1998 keerde hij terug naar Nederland. Hij trad toe tot de raad van bestuur van Philips. Toen hij zichzelf in de media als ‘kroonprins’ van de toenmalige Philipsbaas Cor Boonstra opwierp, was het echter snel gedaan met zijn carrière in Eindhoven.

Pieper vertrok in 1999 naar de Belgische multinational Lernhout & Hauspie. Hij werd vicevoorzitter van de raad van bestuur van dit technologiebedrijf uit Ieper. Een jaar later ging de onderneming als gevolg van ernstige boekhoudfraude failliet.

Sindsdien is Pieper betrokken bij talloze investeringen in jonge bedrijven. Variërend van het weekblad Opinio, de autodealer Tradingcars.com en telecombedrijf Stonehenge. Al deze bedrijven werden een mislukking. Bij Stonehenge wilden curatoren Pieper medeverantwoordelijk stellen voor de schade van 66 miljoen euro wegens 'wanbeleid’.

In een brief aan relaties schreef Pieper vorige week dat hij stopt met investeren. ‘De markt is compleet tot stilstand gekomen.’

De coach van Panathinaikos: Zeljko Obradovic

In an 18-year head coaching career, he has reached 11 Final Fours and won six of them. No one else comes close. Both of those records make Zeljko Obradovic of Panathinaikos the most successful European coach ever and one of the greatest in the history of elite pro basketball. A trophy winner at every stop during his career, Obradovic boasts one Euroleague crown each with Partizan Belgrade, Joventut Badalona and Real Madrid, all before a trio of continental titles with Panathinaikos, for whom he has now coached 10 seasons. He has also won a pair of Saporta Cup titles, 16 national championships and cups, plus four medals with the Yugoslav national team. At age 49, two years after he and Panathinaikos claimed their last Euroleague crown together, Obradovic is poised to add to their legacy at the 2009 Final Four in Berlin.

Congratulations coach on reaching the Final Four. How is getting to the Final Four different now compared to when you first started coaching and do you still use lessons you learned in those early years?

"I have been a coach now 18 years, and the first time I made a Final Four, in Istanbul in 1992, we had a young team and I was a young coach, with no experience. With the years you learn, and you keep learning every day. That is fundamental. All of us in life have to learn new things every day. As a coach, there are a lot of opportunities to do a little better each day. It was difficult 18 years ago to reach the Final Four. Now, what has happened is the Euroleague has changed in a way that there are more teams with more quality now. Each year, of the 24 teams, there are 16 minimum that have some chance of going to the Final Four. I think it gets more difficult each year, and it was already difficult 18 years ago. But I also think that the system now - regular season, Top 16 and best-of-five playoffs - favors the teams with the most quality. Without doubt, I think the four best teams are in the Final Four this season."

What does it mean to you to be the coach with the most European titles?

"The personal things don't interest me much. I am just happy to arrive once more to the Final Four with Panathinaikos. We had difficult moments during the season, but we started playing well in the Top 16 and in the playoffs against Montepaschi Siena, a great team, we kept it up. What was most important was our players understanding that we are good enough. Thanks to that understanding, we are in the Final Four again. I am happy mostly for the players and the fans of Panathinaikos. The personal stuff doesn't interest me."

Did you think when you started coaching 20 years ago that someday you could be in the position you are now?

"Of course not. When I first one with Partizan playing against Joventut in Istanbul, I remember thinking that was the biggest dream that would happen. The truth is that I thought it was happening then only and wouldn't happen again. But you go back to work and every year you have in your mind a target and you work to get there. Early on, however, it was difficult to think this would be the case so often. I enjoy my work, it's true, but I never thought I would get to the position I am in now."

It is rare in any sport, anywhere, for a coach to stay 10 years in the same place. Why has that been possible with you and Panathinaikos?

"First, I think that it is thanks to the fact that we have good results. Also, my relationship with the owners, the Giannakopoulos brothers, is very good. I am also very happy working with my staff, the assistant coaches and everyone involved with the team. Finally, I have a relationship with the people of Panathinaikos, the fans, that goes beyond respect. I understand when a coach is respected, but they love me here, and that gives me a lot of reasons to be happy. But as I said first, results are the boss in our work. After so many years, I think we have played in 20 finals and won 17 titles. That is what matters most, to be honest."

What is the most important aspect of getting ready for a Final Four?

"To arrive there on your best form. You are playing against the best teams and players in Europe. It's most important to be in good physical and psychological shape. There is never a need to motivate players at a Final Four, so what's key is to be at the top of your game and then to play with calm. Of course, neither one is easy."

What does it mean for basketball in Greece to have the great Athens derby as the Euroleague semifinal?

"Everyone here in Athens is talking about the game already, weeks before. It's understandable, because they are two great teams. Greek as a country and Athens as a city have to be proud to put two teams in the top four on the continent. It's a game that everyone is waiting to see now. But we must remember, it's a Final Four and we are just two of the teams. I think we must see it that way. Yes, it's a rivalry, a derby and we know each other well. But we have to prepare like any game. My only desire is that we see good basketball and that the best team wins."

What influence can the fans of both teams have on that game?

"First, I hope and believe that this Final Four can be a great one, and in that sense, I believe that the fans of all four teams have to help do their part. I will be talking to our fans at Panathinaikos, and will try before we go to give them a message: they have to give an example of what great fans they are and they must help us, and that means they must forget other things. If that is the message that the fans take with them, then it is going to be a great event and everyone will be happy."

Your team features several dynamic backcourt players with great leadership skills, but different styles. What is the secret in getting players like Dimitris Diamantidis, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Vassilis Spanoulis and Nicholas to play so well together?

"Because in basketball these days, they have to help each other. If they help each other, the team wins and they win. All are good people with good character, first, and they are also good players who know basketball. For me as a coach, that makes it better and easier. All are protagonists, and each has to understand that how Panathinaikos plays depends on them."

One of your key inside players, Nikola Pekovic, will be on the big stage of the Final Four for the first time. How will you prepare him, specifically, for the moment?

"Although he's a young player, Nikola understands now, beforehand, that this is a great opportunity for him. I've been talking to him and I hope he'll understand what it means to play in a Final Four. He is a great player, important as are all of our players, but he has a big role. I have told him that what's most important is to be physically in his best moment of the season when he gets there. Then he just has to be one more player on the team, doing his job, not pressuring himself to do spectacular things, but just playing basketball as he has until now."

As someone who has seen the best basketball of the last 25 years as a player and a coach, how good can this Final Four - Panathinaikos, CSKA, Barcelona and Olympiacos- be?

"Everyone is already saying, before it starts, that it's probably the best Final Four ever. Just thinking of the size of the clubs, what they mean, and those four names - Panathinaikos, CSKA, Barcelona and Olympiacos - everyone is saying the same thing. I have talked with people in Greece, Italy, Spain, Serbia and other places, and everyone has the same opinion. For the Euroleague, it is something important for the season to have come out like this, with four teams of great quality fighting for the title. It's going to be a great Final Four. I want the best team to win. That is my desire and that of everyone who loves basketball."

Een speler van Olympiacos: Nikola Vujcic

As a two-time Euroleague champion, five-time All-Euroleague selection and arguably the greatest passing big man in the world, Nikola Vujcic already has enjoyed his fair share of success. This season, his magic touch rubbed off on a new team, Olympiacos Piraeus, that had been waiting a decade to return to the Final Four. Not anymore. With Vujcic as top scorer over seven consecutive victories between the Top 16 and the playoffs, the Reds ended their Final Four drought in style. Now the Euroleague's top-ranked player all decade, and second-best in both total points and rebounds, Vujcic makes his fifth Final Four appearance, including four of the previous five seasons with Maccabi Tel Aviv. He will not lack for motivation or know-how as he tries to push Olympiacos even higher in Berlin.

How special is making your fifth Final Four with a new team, Olympiacos?

"It's very special. This is why we play basketball, to be in the place where they are giving out trophies and to have the opportunity to win the biggest one. To be at this Final Four is also an achievement that makes lots of people from Olympiacos very happy because they and their fans have been waiting a long time, 10 years, for it. Seeing all their excitement and appreciation in the last few weeks and after we qualified for the Final Four makes me even more proud and happy that we did this."

With several newcomers like you, how did the team come together in time to reach the Final Four?

"Because so many of us came here new, it took time in the beginning for all of us to adjust to each other and to understand what Coach Giannakis wanted from us. On the other side, it was great to get a couple of new guys who have been so many times in the Final Four. They not only knew how to handle the pressure but also how to help others become team players and play well enough for us to make the Final Four. When you have Theo Papaloukas, a guy who has been to seven Final Fours in a row - if anyone can teach you something, it's him. He even teaches me, because he's beating me, seven Final Fours to five!"

What have you learned from previous experience about preparing for a Final Four?

"Of course, the Euroleague has been making the Final Four more and more exciting every year, with all the events and shows surrounding the games. It's easy to get over-excited in an atmosphere like that, but you have to do your work and not think too much about anything but the big game. As time passes, I am getting more involved in some of the other things, but I try to stay as focused as possible on the basketball in order to lift that trophy. That is the biggest challenge for me, to try to win one more time."

Having been both a favorite and an underdog at Final Fours, which do you prefer and which is Olympiacos now?

"If you are a favorite, of course, it is harder sometimes, but it also means you have a team to fight for the trophy. So I always prefer to go as the favorite. However, I really think that of the five Final Fours that I have been to, this year's is probably the hardest one to say, 'OK, this team is likely to do it'. The system this year, with best-of-five playoffs, really makes for fewer surprises and assures that the best teams are in Berlin."

You've seen and played in great rivalries before. How do you rate the Reds vs. the Greens in the semifinals?

"Of course, everyone has heard stories about these teams in basketball, football and other sports. But when you feel it on your skin, then you get the real point of the rivalry. It's really something special that I don't think you can get anywhere else in the world of sports. I just hope it will stay within the boundaries of sport. When it's only about sports, the atmosphere that these two groups of fans can generate is truly something amazing."

De coach van Barcelona: Xavi Pascual

After waiting through seven Final Four appearances before lifting a Euroleague trophy, Regal FC Barcelona knows about the value of patience. So does Xavi Pascual, the team's rookie head coach. Largely unknown a year ago, Pascual has guided Barcelona with resolve and ingenuity to a shot at its second continental crown. Pascual spent 18 seasons working up through the ranks of Spain's lower divisions until getting a seat on Barcelona's bench as a assistant four years ago. Now in his first complete season as head coach, Pascual enters the 2009 Final Four already having proven plenty by leading Barcelona to the best record in the Euroleague so far. If his season gets any better in Berlin, where Pascual can become a continental champ sooner than all but a few coaches in European history, his days of anonymity will be officially over.

How does it feel to make the Final Four in your first full season as a first-division head coach?

"So far I am happy, knowing that I have to work every day and that reaching the Final Four is just another step forwards. We are all looking forward to stepping on court in Berlin, but to reach the next level, we must beat CSKA and make it to the final."

What do you think about joining modern coaching greats like Ettore Messina, Zeljko Obradovic and Panagiotis Giannakis in Berlin?

"When someone decides that you are able to coach a great team like Barcelona, it is because you are considered to be at that level. If not, nobody would do that. On the other hand, I try not to focus on that, but on my team only. We have to keep growing as a team and I don't really pay attention to much else."

You were an assistant coach when Barcelona went to the 2006 Final Four in Prague. What lessons did you learn there that might help you in Berlin?

"It is tough, because that game was long ago. The Final Four has always had very open games in which anything can happen. Knowing this, we will try to come to Berlin as confident as we can. We have to prepare well for the game against CSKA, knowing that we have to be mentally strong to face anything that can happen on court in a game like this. Sometimes you can have a slow start and lose your chances early without the right mentality. At the same time, you can have a strong start, but see your opponent get back in the game. You cannot lose because you haven't been strong enough. You have to be confident and know that you are doing the right thing, look forward and be conditioned for anything happening during the game."

Barça's long road to Berlin started with the Euroleague Basketball American Tour '08 in Los Angeles last October. How did that experience help prepare your team for the Euroleague?

"Well, it was a very good experience. We were excited about the chance to play in Los Angeles and it came after we had already started our domestic competition. It was a good way to end the preseason. Our team felt stronger once it saw it could compete against NBA squads. It was very positive, because then we flew straight to Nancy to play our first Euroleague game and did very well. We were a bit afraid of jet lag and being tired, but truth be told, everything went well."

There were many highlights during the season for Barcelona. At what point did you realize that this team was good enough to challenge for the Euroleague championship?

"We knew we had our chances from the very beginning of the season, because of our potential. We knew we had to work hard to be better than the previous day and that is what we did. We had a very strong season, even though some people say we had ups and downs. I think there was a moment when we had injuries and were left with just one point guard, and that is when we struggled a bit. That was when we lost against Montepaschi in Siena, a place where you can always lose, and we had a Spanish League home defeat. Even with that, and in general terms, we have been growing as a team, finding the right way."

It’s been a true breakout season for a number of Barcelona’s rising stars, like Ersan Ilyasova, Fran Vazquez and Victor Sada. How do you prepare young players like them for the atmosphere at the Final Four?

"It is true, we have to work hard with them because it is a new situation for them. They have also experienced new situations as protagonists this season and have been able to take a quality jump. The difference is that a Final Four doesn't offer a second chance. You have to focus in one game and try to play well right away because there is no chance to make up for your mistakes. We all have to be ready at an event like this."

Barcelona was down twice to Tau Ceramica in the Quarterfinal Playoffs and won two do-or-die games. How can that experience help the team in Berlin?

"Of course, the team comes out stronger after this series. We had to work hard because it was really tough to lose Game 1 at home. We had been looking forward to the series because we worked hard to get the home-court advantage, so losing Game 1 hurt us a lot. We were able to bounce back right away and change our mentality for the road games. We were also able to recover after losing Game 3. Therefore, this series should give us extra confidence because we know we are on the right path."

In the semifinals you will face the reigning champion, CSKA Moscow. What must be done to prepare to beat CSKA and coach Ettore Messina?

"To begin with, first and foremost, CSKA is a great team, added to the fact that they are used to winning. That gives them a special confidence in highly important games. CSKA is used to fighting for the title every season. I respect coach Messina a lot. He is a great coach, but we must prepare our game plan without thinking too much about who is sitting on the other bench. We have to respect CSKA and work well to compete against them, find a way to beat them, just like we did with all the great teams and great coaches we have faced in the Euroleague and in our domestic competition so far this season."

How much of an advantage is it for Barcelona to have the experienced David Andersen, who spent the last four seasons at CSKA, on your side for this game?

"He is a very important player for us, as he has been showing all season. We hope that he keeps showing that in such an important event for us as the Final Four is. He has a lot of experience and that is always good not only for what he can offer, but also to give extra confidence to the rest of the team."

What would a second Euroleague title mean now to Barcelona and its fans?

"I believe that the Euroleague title has always been the ultimate goal for all Barcelona fans, for all of us. We only have one Euroleague title despite our great run in European basketball throughout the years. So far we only have that single trophy in our roll of honors, but we aim to bring the second one home."

Een speler van CSKA: Matjaz Smodis

Only 10 men in European club basketball history have won four or more continental titles, but they could soon have company in CSKA Moscow power forward Matjaz Smodis. Indeed, a new Euroleague crown would not only make him the 11th member of that exclusive fraternity, but Smodis would also become just the second among them to win titles with more than one club. Smodis began collecting trophies in his native Slovenia before joining his current coach, Ettore Messina, at Kinder Bologna of Italy for their first Euroleague title together, in 2001. Five years later, they met up again to lift 2006 and 2008 Euroleague crowns with CSKA, while losing the the 2007 final by just two points. The first non-Russian team captain in CSKA’s long and glorious history, Smodis missed some early games this season with injury, but returned to lead the charge to the Final Four, his sixth and the club's seventh in a row. A rare combination of inside post-up and outside three-point threat, Smodis is a walking mismatch for defenses and another of CKSA’s big-game shot-makers. If he moves up the ladder of Europe's most successful players ever, Smodis will no doubt be earning every step higher that he takes.

Having qualified for plenty of Final Fours before, do you appreciate it more as you get older?

"Of course, because now I know how hard it is to get to a Final Four. You have to basically be blessed physically and talent-wise enough to even be on a good team that's consistent enough to come to the Final Four. To be able to do that every year makes it that much more unusual."

Even though CSKA's in its seventh straight Final Four, each season is different. What has been unique about this one for CSKA?

"I would say the fact that even after changing a lot of players this summer and losing a couple more during the season with injuries, we still managed to stay competitive and be one of the best teams in Europe."

Before the season, you were named CSKA's first non-Russian captain ever. How much did that responsibility weigh on you in terms of keeping the team's Final Four streak alive?

"I didn't see it as an extra pressure in terms of the Final Four. It was something, let's say, that I felt made it a little more difficult to me to keep doing well. Being captain gives you more responsibility because you have to take things into your hands, on the court and off, read situations, how they are developing and not developing. It has been hard. I like it, but I am still learning and I still feel like I need more time to adjust to the new role."

Back-to-back titles is about the only thing that this CSKA team has not yet accomplished in the Euroleague. How much would a repeat resonate with those of you who have won single titles already?

"That would be the cherry on the cake, basically. Winning back-to-back is something that none of us has done yet. We came close two years ago, but we failed. I think it would mean a lot for us and basically would be the crowning moment of a very special four years in CSKA."

When you left Slovenia almost 10 years ago, could you have imagined becoming a three-time Euroleague champion by now?

"I wouldn't have imagined it at all. At that point, I was just leaving to find security for my family, trying to do my best and earn money for them. It wasn't about winning or doing something special. It was just about putting myself in a position to do well for my family."

One link among all your Euroleague titles, and the quest for a new one now, is Coach Ettore Messina. What has he meant to your career?

"He's a great teacher, a great coach, and surely someone who has helped me, and not just on the court, but also growing up as a person. As I grow on the court, I also grow off the court. Basically, it has been a learning experience with him, and for sure he's a big part of my life. I am very grateful to be able to work with him."

De echte strijd brandt donderdag los

Tweehonderdentwintig wedstrijden zijn er gespeeld om tot een rangschikking te komen voor de play-offs. Acht ploegen doen mee en eigenlijk zitten er geen verrassingen tussen. Dat Amsterdam eerste zou worden kon iedereen voorspellen en de drie teams die zijn afgevallen zal ook niemand verbaasd hebben. Vorig seizoen waren er in de eerste ronde geen verrassingen en gingen de nummers één tot en met vier door. De verwachting voor dit jaar is hetzelfde, ‘darkhorse’ is Rotterdam op dit moment de meest onberekenbare ploeg van Nederland. In de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse play-offs zijn er 521 duels gespeeld. In 65,6% van de gevallen won de thuisspelende formatie. In totaal zijn er 82605 punten gescoord. De gemiddelde uitslag was 77,7 - 73,3. De eerste ronde is een best-off-threereeks; donderdagavond zijn de eerste wedstrijden, zaterdag de tweede en volgende week dinsdag, woensdag en donderdag komt er in de diverse series eventueel een vervolg.

Het meest eigenaardige aan dit alles is misschien wel dat Leiden en Weert, ploegen die veel meer duels verloren hebben dan gewonnen, toch nog kans maken op de titel. Enerzijds is dit het leuke van de play-offs anderzijds is het ook wel wat veel eer.

Vorig seizoen bereikten Zwolle en Weert als nummers zeven en acht de play-offs met een winstpercentage van 45% en 42,5%. Nu zijn dat Weert en Leiden met 37,5% en 35%. Ofwel het gat tussen de kleintjes en de middenmoot in de Eredivisie is groter geworden en toch is er een beloning. Misschien dat de clubs/FEB daar eens over na moeten denken. Overigens is al besloten om van de eerste ronde volgend seizoen een best-off-fiveserie te maken.

Amsterdam is het hele seizoen al ongenaakbaar en dat blijkt ook uit de cijfers. Zo is het winstpercentage van de titelverdediger maar liefst 87,5% tegenover 77,5% een jaar geleden. Overigens is het uitstekende seizoen van Amsterdam net geen evenaring van het recordjaar van Den Bosch, dat twee seizoenen geleden 90% van haar duels won. Duidelijk is wel dat het verschil tussen de twee vaderlandse grootmachten groter is geworden. Zaten er vorig seizoen vier winstpartijen tussen, nu is het verschil zeven overwinningen. Kortom bovenal is Amsterdam favoriet om de titel te prolongeren.

1. EclipseJet-MyGuide (35-5) - 8. Zorg en Zekerheid Leiden (14-26)
Voor de titelverdediger mag de eerste ronde niets anders zijn dan een leuk opwarmertje voor later. De ploeg is in vorm getuige ook de reeks van negen overwinningen op rij waarmee het seizoen is afgesloten. De kampioen is de maatlat en slechts op één manier kan Leiden voor een stunt zorgen, dat is als Amsterdam de tegenstander enorm onderschat en dat lijkt niet waarschijnlijk. Alle vier de onderlinge confrontaties zijn dit seizoen gewonnen door de formatie van Arik Shivek en dat zegt veel, al waren de verschillen vaak niet groot. Zo verloor Leiden vorige week nog met maar zes punten verschil. Leiden schiet de laatste weken van buiten de driepuntslijn geen deuk in een pakje boter. Om ook maar een beetje kans te maken zal dit facet een heel stuk beter moeten. Toon van Helfteren is er wel de coach naar om zijn ploeg scherp te hebben in de play-offs, de ploeg heeft bovendien redelijk wat play-offervaring in huis. Het enige dat Amsterdam in de weg kan zitten is de financiële situatie rond de club omdat beide sponsors uit de hoed van Roel Pieper failliet zijn. Al met al is Amsterdam te goed en lijkt het er op dat Leiden kwaliteit tekort komt om deze serie spannend te maken.

2.EiffelTowers (28-12) - 7.Upstairs Weert (15-25)
De term ‘het kan vriezen, het kan dooien’ lijkt uitgevonden in Den Bosch. Sinds de coachwissel in januari leek het de goede kant op te gaan met de ploeg. De verdediging werd aangescherpt en verloren werd er nauwelijks. Totdat het maart werd. De tegenstanders kregen weer volop de kans om te scoren en recentelijk werd een belangrijke wedstrijd in Groningen met maar liefst 26 punten verloren. De gemakzucht waar de ploeg onder Randy Wiel nogal eens last van had is klaarblijkelijk nog niet verdwenen. Tegen Weert zou dat heel slecht kunnen uitpakken. Ware het niet dat Eiffel onlangs nog verloor in Limburg en dat zal Don Beck heel goed uitkomen in de aanloop naar deze serie. Upstairs heeft namelijk niets te verliezen en zal zo ook spelen, op het randje. Natuurlijk is Den Bosch de favoriet. Maar met Ross, Stapleton en Smith heeft Weert voldoende scorend vermogen in huis en met Jackson staat er echt iemand onder het bord. Grote probleem voor Weert is dat het na deze genoemde spelers ophoud. Dit is wel een historische clash want beide teams stonden al tien keer eerder tegenover elkaar in de play-offs. Deze serie staat altijd bol van de emoties. Vooral zaterdag in Weert zal dat merkbaar zijn en dat wordt dan een mooie test voor de mentale kracht van Den Bosch. 3. Hanzevast Capitals (26-14) - 6.Rotterdam Challengers (22-18)
Groningen heeft een goed seizoen achter de rug. De ploeg met de meeste en meest fanatieke supporters van Nederland heeft zich onder Marco van den Berg keurig gerevancheerd voor het zwakke seizoen van een jaar geleden. Er staat een uitgebalanceerde ploeg. Dat kan van de tegenstander niet echt gezegd worden. Na het ontslag van Stansbury is het wel veel beter gegaan, maar uiteindelijk heeft de ploeg één wedstrijd minder gewonnen dan vorig seizoen. Bovendien is de laatste weken wel een beetje de klad in de resultaten gekomen. Daarbij komt nog één heel erg belangrijk punt. Eigenaar en voorzitter Johan van Haga heeft al geroepen dat hij volgend jaar met alleen maar Nederlanders wil gaan spelen. Tactisch niet zo´n slimme uitspraak want de kans is erg groot dat de huidige zeven buitenlanders het al snel best zullen gaan vinden en dan kan Maarten van Gent coachen wat hij wil. Op papier lijken beide teams aan elkaar gewaagd en de teams spelen ook een soortgelijk spelletje. Hanzevast won drie van de vier onderlinge ontmoetingen, waaronder anderhalve week geleden ruim in Martiniplaza. McCrommon is wellicht speelklaar na een gekneusde duim en met hem wordt de aanval van Groningen een stuk minder voorspelbaar. Rotterdam wint het hele seizoen al moeilijk uitwedstrijden en om verder te komen zal dat toch moeten gebeuren in de Groningse heksenketel waar de thuisploeg dit seizoen maar vier keer verloor. Rotterdam is wel de ploeg die beter verdedigd en dat is in deze fase belangrijk. Anderzijds is Groningen de best scorende formatie van het land. Om een serieuze kans te maken moet Challengers de angel uit de Groningse driepunter halen.

4. West-Brabant Giants (24-16) - 5. Matrixx Magixx (24-16)
Over een heel seizoen genomen zijn deze twee ploegen gelijkwaardig. Een blik op de laatste tien wedstrijden levert meer duidelijkheid op. Giants heeft een uitstekende reeks achter de rug (8-2) en Matrixx wat minder (6-4, met nog een overtime winst in Den Helder). Een van die twee nederlagen van Bergen op Zoom was overigens een meer dan kansloze in Nijmegen (85-49) op een avond dat coach Erik Braal geschorst was. De andere drie onderlinge duels waren allemaal voor Giants. Nijmegen heeft voldoende potentie in huis maar om de een of andere reden komt dat er niet helemaal uit. Heeft ook met leiderschap op het veld te maken. Eigenlijk is er geen leider bij Nijmegen en Bergen op Zoom heeft natuurlijk Patrick Pope. Het gebrek aan leiding openbaart zich bij Matrixx vooral in de aanval. Nou is Giants niet de best verdedigende ploeg van Nederland, dus dat scheelt. Beide teams leiden opvallend veel balverlies en voeren deze ranglijst ook aan. Al verliest Nijmegen per wedstrijd de bal nog drie keer vaker dan Giants. Opvallend is wel dat Matrixx per wedstrijd 17 keer een bal afpakt tegenover 9 voor Bergen op Zoom. Wes-Brabant Giants kent de laatste weken naast Pope en Blue telkens iemand anders die scorend opstaat. De vraag is of die er ook in de play-offs zal zijn. Nijmegen moet vooral het ‘koppie’ erbij zien te houden en effiecient spelen. Thuisvoordeel kan hier doorslaggevend zijn.

EuroChallenge voor Bologna

BOLOGNA - Het EuroChallenge toernooi, waarin EclipseJet-MyGuide en EiffelTowers het dit seizoen heel behoorlijk deden, is gewonnen voor Virtus Bologna. De Italianen die de finaleronde organiseerden, versloegen in de eindstrijd van de Final Four het Franse Cholet (77-75). BC Triumph uit Moskou werd derde na een overwinning op Proteas Limassol (94-82). Cholet was tegenstander van EiffelTowers in de tweede ronde van dit toernooi. In de Maaspoort verloor Eiffel toen nipt en daardoor bereikte de ploeg niet de kwartfinale. Dat lukte Amsterdam wel. De kampioen werd daarin uitgeschakeld door Limassol. In de halve finale won Cholet nipt van Triumph (81-78), de Russen zaten in de tweede ronde bij Amsterdam in de groep. Bologna won ruim van de Cyprioten (83-69).

Voorbeschouwing halve finales

De halve finales bestaan uit twee series met een behoorlijk verschillende achtergrond. Zo stonden Amsterdam en Bergen op Zoom nog nooit tegenover elkaar in de play-offs. Daar tegenover staat de reeks tussen Den Bosch en Groningen waar de traditie vanaf druipt met acht onderlinge confrontaties. Bovendien trekt deze serie, die zondag in een vast en zeker uitverkochte Maaspoort begint, enorm veel publiek in tegenstelling tot de andere reeks, die zaterdag in de Sporthallen Zuid start. Het gaat om een best-off-fiveserie. LIVE flitsen van beide duels zijn te horen op NOS Langs de Lijn via radio 1.

Sinds de invoering van het best-off-fiveformat voor de halve finales van de play-offs in het seizoen 1981-1982 zijn er 178 wedstrijden zo gespeeld. In 70,2% van de gevallen werden die wedstrijden gewonnen door de thuisploeg. De gemiddelde uitslag van de halve finalewedstrijden in dit format was 82,4-77,0.

De grootste overwinning in een halve finale staat op naam van Den Helder dat in het seizoen ‘86-’87 met 51 punten verschil won van Orka’s (119-68). De grootste thuisnederlaag was voor Amsterdam dat in het seizoen ‘87-’88 met 45 punten verschil onderuit ging tegen Den Bosch (99-144).

In alle jaren is er 46 keer een eerste wedstrijd in een best-off-fivereeks gespeeld. In slechts zeven gevallen won de uitspelende ploeg die eerste wedstrijd. De laatste die dat lukte was Groningen dat in de halve finale van het seizoen 2005-2006 de eerste wedstrijd in Amsterdam won (50-67).

1. EclipseJet-MyGuide (35-5 / 2-0) - 4. West-Brabant Giants (24-16 / 2-1)
Amsterdam en zeker Bergen op Zoom hebben een stuk minder verleden in de play-offs dan de twee teams in de andere halve finale. Voor Amsterdam is het de 20e keer dat er wordt meegedaan aan de play-offs, zes keer werd de ploeg kampioen. Bergen op Zoom doet voor de 4e keer mee aan de play-offs.

De ploegen stonden nog nooit tegenover elkaar in de play-offs, de Westbrabantse formatie kwam zelfs nog nooit verder dan de halve finale. Naast vorig seizoen kwam Bergen op Zoom in 2003-2004 zo ver.

Dit seizoen speelden deze teams vijf keer tegen elkaar. Vier van de vijf duels werden gewonnen door EclipseJet. Opmerkelijk is wel dat West-Brabant Giants één van de twee ploegen is (Nijmegen is de ander) die dit seizoen een competitiewedstrijd wist te winnen in de Sporthallen Zuid. Op 17 januari waren dat ook nog eens 20 punten verschil (84-104). De andere thuiswedstrijd won de ploeg van Shivek met een nog groter verschil. De twee competitieduels in Bergen op Zoom won Amsterdam ook, maar met een aanzienlijk kleiner verschil. In de kwartfinale van de Beker stonden deze teams nog eens tegenover elkaar in sporthal Boulevard, toen won EclipseJet (63-72).

De ploeg uit de hoofdstad is de torenhoge favoriet in deze serie. De titelverdediger heeft niet alleen veel meer geld te besteden en dus meer kwaliteit in huis, de ploeg is gewoon moeilijk te verslaan (getuige ook het verschil in de eindstand van de Eredivisie) en drie keer door Giants lijkt bijna een onmogelijke opgave. Het grote voordeel voor de Brabanders is dat alle druk bij de tegenstander ligt en dat Giants vrijuit kan spelen.

Vorig jaar dwong Erik Braal EiffelTowers in de halve finale tot het uiterste en het is zeker niet uitgesloten dat het hem nu weer lukt. Wellicht dat de financiële perikelen nog een rol spelen in de hoofden van de Amsterdammers. Feit is wel dat Tamien Trent er in de eerste wedstrijd niet bij is door een disciplinaire schorsing. Hij is door zijn club tot en met 4 mei geschorst. Schijnbaar heeft de guard zich op de training misdragen tegenover coach Shivek. Hoe dan ook zal dit op korte en ook op langere termijn invloed hebben. Al moet de rol van Trent, die van de bank komt voor 20 minuten en 8 punten gemiddeld, niet overschat worden zolang Gibson, Harrison en Greene beschikbaar zijn.

Voordeel voor Amsterdam is dat Shivek al twee jaar werkt met bijna dezelfde spelersgroep, terwijl Giants een seizoen vol spelerswisselingen heeft gehad. De kampioen heeft ook veel meer ervaring op het veld staan, daar tegenover staat wel een ploeg met ambities en honger. EclipseJet heeft dit seizoen haar kracht bewezen zeker ook in Europa. Vooral de verdediging is erg, bijna on-Nederlands, sterk. Daar ligt ook de nadruk van het spel. Bergen op Zoom heeft dat niet en speelt liever ineen wat hoger tempo dan de tegenstander.

Aanvallend gezien doen beide teams dit seizoen niet zoveel voor elkaar onder. Amsterdam is de derde ploeg van Nederland qua gemiddelde score (84,2), Bergen op Zoom volgt direct daarna (83,6). Zoals gezegd is er wel een groot verschil in het aantal tegenscores. Amsterdam is verreweg de best verdedigende ploeg van Nederland (73,0), Giants is wat dit betreft een middenmoter (79,2).

Een zeer opvallend verschil ligt er bij de rebounds. Over het seizoen genomen is Giants verreweg de best reboundende ploeg van het land (40,0), Amsterdam staat op die ranglijst 8e (37,3). Het verschil wordt door de Brabanders vooral gemaakt in de aanvallende rebounds. Hier liggen dus kansen voor de Giants.

Een facet waar de ploeg van Erik Braal heel erg op moet letten is het balverlies. In de ranglijst staat de ploeg tweede (16,6) tussen allemaal kleine broeders. Amsterdam is de op twee na zuinigste ploeg met het balbezit (14,3). Bergen op Zoom maakt dit probleem ook zeker niet goed met het aantal steals, sterker nog over het seizoen genomen pakt Giants het minst de bal af van alle ploegen. Duidelijk is dat de Westbrabanders heel zuinig met de bal om moeten gaan om de serie spannend te houden.

Amsterdam had het in de kwartfinale opvallend moeilijk met Leiden. Als de ploeg haar normale niveau haalt kan het tegen Bergen op Zoom bijna niet mis gaan. Shivek heeft negen spelers tot zijn beschikking en Braal maar zeven, al is dat in een best-off-fiveserie niet zonder meer een probleem zolang de ploeg uit foutenlast blijft. EclipseJet-MyGuide haalt normaal gesproken de volgende ronde als de ploeg doet wat ze kan. Aan de andere kant zal West-Brabant Giants boven zichzelf uit moeten stijgen, moet Pope een wereldserie spelen en als de zwakke punten gecamoufleerd kunnen worden, kan het een leuke serie worden.

2. EiffelTowers (28-12 / 2-0) - 3. Hanzevast Capitals (26-14 / 2-0)
Beide ploegen hebben in de play-offs een enorme historie opgebouwd. Den Bosch is sinds de invoering in het seizoen 1977-1978 voor de 31e keer deelnemer aan de play-offs, alleen in het seizoen ‘94-‘95 niet en is 14-voudig kampioen. Groningen doet voor de 25e keer mee en was twee keer kampioen.

In het rijke verleden speelden deze ploegen acht series tegen elkaar. Zes keer won Den Bosch, twee keer Groningen. De laatste confrontatie was in het seizoen 2005-2006. Den Bosch won de finaleserie van het Groningen van Ton Boot, het was toen het eerste kampioenschap van Randy Wiel en EiffelTowers in Den Bosch. In totaal werden tussen deze ploegen onderling 33 play-offwedstrijden gespeeld. 20 keer won Den Bosch, 13 keer Groningen.

Belangrijk, metname voor de Groningers, is de prestatie in uitwedstrijden want om de finale te bereiken moet Hanzevast minstens één keer winnen in de Maaspoort. Historisch gezien wordt dat lastig. In totaal speelde de ploeg 18 keer in Den Bosch, daarvan werden slechts drie duels gewonnen. De laatste keer was in 2004, wat Ton Boot toen het kampioenschap opleverde. Daarvoor waren er voor de Groningers alleen twee overwinningen in het seizoen ‘81-’82. Den Bosch doet het in het Noorden ietsje beter met vijf overwinningen in 15 duels. De laatste keer dat Den Bosch een play-offwedstrijd won in Groningen dateert wel al van 1992.

Dit seizoen zijn de ploegen aan elkaar gewaagd. In de competitie wonnen de teams hun twee thuiswedstrijden. Hanzevast de laatste op 15 april erg overtuigend (89-63). Daar tegenover staat dat EiffelTowers in Martiniplaza de kwartfinalewedstrijd van de Beker won.

EiffelTowers is de favoriet op basis van de hogere klassering op de ranglijst en het bijbehorende thuisvoordeel, maar ook door de hogere begroting al zegt geld -gelukkig- niet alles.

Qua speelstijl is er niet veel verschil tussen beide teams. In scorende zin zijn het de twee beste teams van Nederland. Hanzevast (85,1) en Eiffel (84,8). Den Bosch is wel beduidend sterker in de verdediging (75,6) dan de Groningers (80,5). Omdat, zeker in de play-offs, geldt ‘defense wins’ ligt hier een voordeel voor de formatie van Don Beck.

De ploegen maken graag tempo in de aanval, zeker na een rebound en dat laatste is bij beide goed verzorgd. Al is daar wel iets opmerkelijks aan de hand. Op de ranglijst van de gemiddelde rebounds per wedstrijd (aanvallend+verdedigend) staat Eiffel derde (38,7) en Hanzevast vierde (38,3). Het opvallende zit in de aanvallende rebounds want de Groningers voeren het klassement aanvallende rebounds aan (13,4) en Den Bosch staat maar negende (10,9). Als de ploeg van Marco van den Berg dit facet weet uit te buiten (2nd chance points), ligt hier een voordeel voor zijn team.

Wat verder opvalt in de cijfers is het grote verschil in balverlies en dat is een facet dat in de play-offs van wezenlijk belang is, zeker als het spannend wordt. Daarbij leidt Eiffel gemiddeld het minste balverlies van Nederland (13,8) en raakt Groningen en stukje vaker de bal kwijt (15,2).

Hanzevast Capitals is een ploeg waarvan je weet wat je krijgt; hard werken en degelijk teambasketbal. Sinds de komst van Beck speelt EiffelTowers een soortgelijk spel alleen zijn de pieken, maar ook de dalen van de Bossche formatie groot.

Qua spelers is er niet veel verschil, maar mede door de hogere begroting, heeft Eiffel in ieder geval op papier meer kwaliteit in huis. Beck gebruikt negen man, Van den Berg acht. Dan hangt de komst van Beasley nog ergens in de lucht.

Groot voordeel voor de Groningers is dat Bellin en Novak exact weten hoe in de play-offs de grenzen opgezocht moeten worden. Zulke spelers ontbreken bij Eiffel, mede door de afwezigheid van Frederiks. Er lijkt een belangrijke rol in het verschiet te liggen voor Marcel Aarts om Bellin in te tomen. In het voordeel van Den Bosch spreekt dat ze een man in huis heeft die eigenhandig een wedstrijd kan overnemen. De afgelopen jaren was dat Travis Young, maar in Weert liet Taron Downey zien zijn rechtmatige opvolger te zijn. Zo’n speler heeft Hanzevast weer niet.

Zowel EiffelTowers als Hanzevast hadden een pittige kwartfinale, maar kwamen er uiteindelijk zonder kleerscheuren uit. Al scheelde dit voor Den Bosch in Weert maar heel weinig. Dat kwam vooral omdat de lange Amerikanen mentaal totaal niet klaar waren voor een gevecht. Aangenomen dat ze wakker zijn geschud, belooft dit mede door het publiek een fantastische serie te worden. Op veel fronten zijn de teams in evenwicht. Eiffel heeft meer ervaring en zeker in uitwedstrijden is dat een voordeel. Als de ploeg van Don Beck doet wat ze kan, haalt ze de finale. Voor Groningen geldt dat de ploeg boven zichzelf uit moet gaan stijgen om zover te komen.

Ne NBA-playoffs zijn in volle gang, gister alweer een derde keer overtime gezien in de series tussen Chicago en Boston en in Nederland zijn de halve finales aangebroken.

CSKA Moscow advanced to the Euroleague title game for the fourth year in a row by knocking off Regal FC Barcelona 78-82 on Friday evening in the opening game of the 2009 Euroleague Basketball Final Four at the o2 World in Berlin. Ramunas Siskauskas was the hero after scoring 18 of his career-high 29 points in the fourth quarter – including all the points in a 0-11 run that gave CSKA its first lead. The champs will next face the winner of Friday’s second semifinal between Greek rivals Olympiacos and Panathinaikos in the championship game. The club will try to become the seventh to win back-to-back Euroleague crowns, a feat last accomplished by Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2004-05. CSKA also targets its seventh Euroleague title, which would bring it within one of Real Madrid for the most ever, while head coach Ettore Messina seeks his fifth title, which would place him alone in second place behind only Zeljko Obradovic on the all-time coaching list. Barcelona started strong and led by double figures already in the opening quarter, but CSKA never folded and saved its best for last. Trajan Langdon added 15 for the champs and Viktor Khryapa posted 9 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Former CSKA star David Andersen paced Barcelona with 24 points and Jaka Lakovic and Juan Carlos Navarro netted 13 apiece in defeat.

Messina used an unexpected lineup with Khryapa in his starting five instead of Siskauskas, who came off the bench for just the third time this season. Andersen got Barcelona going with a baseline jumper before Langdon tied the game. CSKA had trouble hitting shots while Lakovic stepped up with a running triple and Navarro buried one from downtown for an 8-2 Barcelona lead. Langdon answered with a jumper only to see Lakovic nail his second three-pointer. Andersen joined the three-point shootout, causing CSKA to call a much-needed timeout at 14-4. J.R. Holden tried to change things with a fallaway jumper off the dribble, but a layup-plus-foul by Daniel Santiago made it an 11-point game. CSKA tried a new frontline with Siskauskas, Terence Morris and Sasha Kaun together on court. Barcelona did not allow easy shots, but CSKA tried to change things with a fast break dunk off a steal. Roger Grimau came through with a driving layup, but free throws by Kaun and an easy basket by Siskauskas got CSKA within 19-12. Andersen fed Lubos Barton for a layup that restored a 21-12 Barcelona lead after 10 minutes.

CSKA tried a tall lineup early in the second quarter with Siskauskas and Khryapa at the wings. Matjaz Smodis scored inside and Kaun provided a highlight with a slam that got his team within 21-16. Khryapa also threw one down off a steal, leading Barcelona head coach Xavi Pascual to call timeout to stop a 0-6 run. Lakovic stepped up with a fast break layup, but CSKA had adjusted its man-to-man defense with Kaun as its key player. Andersen beat the shot clock with a turnaround jumper that gave his team some fresh air at 25-18. Smodis hit a layup off a CSKA timeout, but soon Fran Vazquez erased it with a dunk. Langdon made free throws on Navarro's third foul. Lakovic came through with a long bomb. This time Smodis answered from downtown to keep CSKA within 30-25. Siskauskas sank free throws and a triple by Holden tied it at 30-30. Basile buried 2 foul shots and Santiago added a power layup to put their team back ahead, 34-30. Langdon beat the shot clock with a long jumper but a buzzer-beating put-back basket by Andersen - that had to be double-checked through instant replay - fixed the halftime score at 36-32.

Andersen fired in a three-pointer to start the second half and Grimau collected a steal and raced downcourt for a dunk for a 41-32 Barcelona lead. Lorbek picked up his first points on a jump hook and soon added a power layup to bring CSKA back to life. Andersen provided a great assist to Santiago, but Langdon and a baseline jumper by Khryapa got CSKA even closer. Barcelona tried to improve its offense with Navarro and Vazquez on court now. Vazquez scored on a tip-in, however Lorbek bettered him with a three-point play. Navarro shined with his trademark floating layup - 'la bomba' - which Langdon matched with a mid-range jumper. Free throws by Siskauskas soon made it a one-point game. Andersen rescued Barcelona with a three-point play, but a driving layup by Langdon kept CSKA within 50-48. Navarro made free throws only to see Lorbek and a big triple by Siskauskas tie it again at 52-52. Andersen beat the shot clock with a smooth turnaround jumper that Siskauskas erased with a reverse layup. Santiago made free throws to put Barcelona back ahead, 56-54, after 30 minutes.

The game turned into a physical battle early in the fourth quarter and Barcelona made the most out of it. Smodis sank a floating layup to finish a two-chance offense, but Andersen scored again for a 58-56 Barcelona lead. CSKA opted to slow down the game tempo with Zoran Planinic and Holden together on court, but it couldn't create good shots. At the other end, a red-hot Andersen nailed an open three-pointer. But after a timeout, CSKA took the upper hand. Siskauskas buried back-to-back three-pointers to give CSKA its first lead, 61-62, with less than seven minutes remaining. Siskauskas continued to shine, adding free throws. Lakovic struggled to call the right plays against Holden and Planinic, so Pascual opted to use Victor Sada in crunch time. Siskauskas buried another bomb from downtown for a 61-67 CSKA edge, capping a 0-11 run in which he had all the points. Basile beat the shot clock with a wild triple, but Siskauskas answered with an acrobatic basket. Vazquez and Khryapa traded dunks as CSKA kept a 66-72 lead. Navarro nailed a big three-pointer, as CSKA tried to run the clock down now. Siskauskas downed free throws, however Ersan Ilyasova’s fadeaway jumper kept Barcelona as close as 71-74 with 1:40 to go. Langdon banked in a critical put-back jumper, but Navarro quickly answered from downtown, 74-76. Siskauskas provided a highlight with a fallaway jumper and collected a steal that allowed Holden to seal the outcome with free throws, 74-80, with 21.9 seconds to go. Andersen added 2 free throws with 15 seconds left, but Barcelona was stuck fouling to stop the clock and Holden and Siskauskas made free throws to wrap up the win.

Panathinaikos bested archrival Olympiacos Piraeus 82-84 in a memorable second semifinal of the 2009 Euroleague Basketball Final Four on Friday evening at the o2 World in Berlin. The Greens advance to face defending champion CSKA Moscow in a rematch of the 2007 title game on Sunday. Panathinaikos edged CSKA for the crown that season in Athens. In front of an electric crowd, the game lived up to all its billing and came down to the final shot. But Ioannis Bourousis missed in the final seconds and Josh Childress couldn’t hit the follow-up as the Greens celebrated a big win. Panathinaikos enjoyed a well-balanced attack led by Nikola Pekovic with 20 points. Mike Batiste added 19, while Vassilis Spanoulis and Sarunas Jasikevicius netted 18 apiece. On Sunday Panathinaikos will aim to lift its fifth Euroleague crown, which would place it in a tie for the third most in the Euroleague. Zeljko Obradovic, the winningest head coach in Euroleague history, will target a record seventh title; team captain Fragiskos Alvertis will try for his fifth Euroleague championship, tying him for the second most ever; while Sarunas Jasikevicius tries to become the first player to win the Euroleague with three different teams. Meanwhile Olympiacos, which will face Regal FC Barcelona in the third-place game, got 18 points from Lynn Greer, 14 from Nikola Vujcic, 11 from Childress and 10 from Bourousis.

Olympiacos won the opening tip, but it was Panathinaikos that struck first through Stratos Perperoglou, who scored in front of Childress and on the break thanks to a dish from Drew Nicholas. Pekovic muscled his way through Vujcic for a basket-plus-foul that gave the Greens a 0-7 lead. Vujcic finally got the Reds on the board with a hook shot and after Pekovic added to his tally inside, Childress set up Georgios Printezis for a three-point play. Childrss narrowed the gap to 2 with a layup in transition, but Panathinaikos capitalized on the fast pace through Spanoulis, whose basket and free throws on successive possessions made it 7-13. Yotam Halperin drove the lane for a basket. Panathinaikos continued to look for Pekovic inside and it worked. Theo Papaloukas came in and drove directly to the hoop, but Spanoulis beat him for a basket at the other end. A Batiste follow-up slam charged the already supped-up Green crowd. Both coaches substituted freely with only three starters still on the floor at the four-minute mark. Greer converted three the hard way and then drilled one from downtown to bring the Reds within 3. Free throws by Childress and then Bourousis further closed the gap, however Jasikevicius made a pair of free throws and Spanoulis drilled a three to give him 11 first-quarter points and Panathinaikos a 21-27 lead after 10 minutes.

Zoran Erceg started the second quarter with a three. Pekovic scored inside again, but soon picked up his second foul. Still he punished the Reds with a pair of baskets, a foul from Bourousis and 2 free throws to make it 28-35. Papaloukas and Batiste traded scores as the pace quickened with both teams using three-guard lineups. Greer heated up with a basket and a triple. Even after a timeout, he came through with a floater to narrow the gap to 37-39. The Greens brought Pekovic back in, but failed to get him the ball. A stutter move from Papaloukas helped him get in for a layup to tie the game for the first time, 39-39. Spanoulis’s first points of the second quarter put the Greens back on top. Printezis tied it again inside before Antonis Fotsis’s lucky backwards tip-in beat the shot-clock buzzer. Halperin missed a long three on the last possession before halftime as Panathinaikos took a 41-43 lead into the locker rooms.

The Reds came out for the second half and quickly tied the score for the third time on a brilliant Papaloukas dish to Printezis. Olympiacos’s first lead came when Greer fed Vujcic off the pick-and-roll for a three-point play. Spanoulis and Pekovic restored Panathinaikos’s lead and Fotsis frilled a three to cap a 0-7 run. Vujcic beat the Green defense to the hoop and then scored after a tough drive by Printezis to knot the game at 50-50. Every possession took on a life of its own in a game certainly worthy of a Final Four semifinal. Childress brought out the best of the Olympiacos fans with an acrobatic drive and layup and Papaloukas fed Vujcic to put his team up 4. Panathiaikos came right back with Jasikevicius free throws and then tied the game on a Batiste slam. Childress and Batiste then traded remarkable athletic feats, the former scoring on a ridiculous follow-up dunk and the latter throwing down a powerful alley-oop. The score was still tied after Milos Teodosic and Jasikevicius traded threes. A second Saras triple followed by an Olympiacos 24-second violation gave the Greens a cushion. Batiste stretched it with a bucket in the paint and nearly made it stand with a block at the other end, however a Bourousis three made it 63-66 heading into the fourth quarter.

Halperin dished to Childress to bring Olympiacos within 1 as the drama grew. Batiste threw down another monster slam, the Reds lost a possession due to the 24-second clock and Batiste made it 65-70 from the line. Dimitris Diamantidis found Jasikevicius from the floor and he struck again from downtown and pranced down the floor as the Greens went up 8. An Olympiacos timeout helped the Reds reset and narrow the gap through free throws by Halperin and a Vujcic jumper. Printezis further cut the lead before Spanoulis stepped up with a three to make it 71-76 with five-and-a-half minutes remaining. Greer kept Olympiacos in the hunt with 3 free throws, but Saras roared through the lane for a layup. After Vujcic missed from close range, Jasikevicius looked to seal the win with a three-pointer. But Bourousis inside and Papaloukas from downtown pulled Olympiacos back to 79-81 with 2:05 on the clock. The Greens used a timeout, but the momentum remained with the Reds as Vujcic drew Pekovic’s fourth foul and closed the deficit to a single point. At the other end, Pekovic drew Vujcic’s fourth foul and made 1 from the line as well. Bourousis tied the game at 82-82 with 1:12 to go only to see Pekovic score at the other end. Vujcic missed a three, but when Pekovic’s shot rolled out, the Reds had the ball for the last possession. But when Bourousis’s shot bounced out and the tip by Childress went over, the Greens were able to celebrate a memorable victory and berth in the title game.

NBA play offs worden al spannend voor de Lakers. Spijker harde serie met de Rockets. Game 1 ging verloren tegen Houston, vooral omdat Kobe met griep speelde. Game 2 ging al weer wat beter met hem en die wonnen ze dan ook. Logisch zou winst in game 3 zijn om het thuisvoordeel terug te pakken. Weliswaar zonder de geschorste Fisher en met een herstellende Bynum (die er eigenlijk te laat bij is om mee te kunnen doen op play-off niveau, zag je ook bij Utah's Okur). Verder is het op het moment een en al Lebron James in de NBA.
