Saw the amazing Reverend Horton Heat on Saturday night. Absolutely off the hook. Strongly recommend the good reverend and his kick ass band for lovers of straight ahead, no BS rock and roll.

Saw the Reverand in Florida 2 weeks ago myself. Off the hook harcore shit--right into your bones type stuff. My first post on my favorite team-that I get up at 6 am to watch Sunday morning games on dodgy internet streams- and its on the Reverand Horton Heat!

Never believed I'd hear any band cover Chet Atkins, sorry but I forget the song title, Ace of Spades by Motorhead, Iron Man by Black Sabbath, Rock This Town by Stray Cats AND play 20+ of their own brand of Dick Dale meets Carl Perkins magic. But then, i'd never seen the good reverend until this past Saturday in Philly. :onfire.gif: RHH on fire !!

I saw The Rev a few years ago with Man or Astroman and Captured by Robots (one guy who built a robot band that went on to enslave him). It was quite the show and all three are pretty entertaining to see if you get the chance.

Dutch band Solo have a new album 'Before We Part' out.

I think it's great, same mellow sounds as the previous two. It only arrived today so haven't listened much but so far I really like track two 'Love Always Hopes', four 'Who Are You?" and five "Haven't You Heard The News?".

Solo is apparently now truly a solo artist, although previous collaborators appear on this album the actual line-up of the 'group' is now really just Michiel Flamman as a solo artist.

Last night Dante's in Portland. Tonight, the Showbox in Seattle. Piss poor Economy or not, I had fly out to catch Green River. Yes, ladies and gentleman...THAT GREEN RIVER. GR en fuego !!! :onfire.gif: Mark Arm ,Steve Turner , Jeff Ament , Stone Gossard , Alex Shumway ( formerly Shumway, then Vincent, now Shumway), and Bruce Fairweather. If you can find video on You Tube, enjoy! I sure did last night and will tonight. The old stuff still sounds amazing. From "Green River" to " Swallow My Pride " to a rocking cover of David Bowie's " Queen Bitch ". It was bleeping, blanking, *#@!in' AMAZING. Mark Arm alone would've been worth the trip. he kicked ass.

Rumour, from Mark Arm's lips, is that more shows and even some new tracks aren't out of the question. Here's hoping he's right.

I feel so totally old and out of touch whenever I stumble into this thread. But hey, my one redeeming discover this Winter has been... the EELS! I saw a documentary about the lead dude and bought a compilation. It's brilliant.

On Yahoo Blog today:
This reminds me that I need to make good on my long-standing commitment to form my own band, The Turgid Members. Our first album will be "My Splendid Tumescence" followed by "Ed's Morphine" (an homage/tribute).

Just need to learn to play 3 chords... :headbang.gif:

Several years ago, my son the drummer won a talent show at his high school as a member (you should pardon the expression) of a one-off called Black Shirts and Plaid Skirts. They wore--you guessed it--black T-shirts and (borrowed) plaid field hockey kilts; it was quite amusing watching him trying to climb on and off the drum riser without exposing his naughty bits.

But his real ambition, as yet unrealized, is to start a band called the Grackles, after the official trash bird that infests Austin. And their first album will be titled--are you ready?--Snappy Grackle Pop. :headbang.gif:

Just wanted to share a recent discovery...

My communte has got very long recently and to while away the time I've become a big fan of podcasts. One of these that I like very much is the "The Word" magazine's podcast which is little more than a casual chat between a bunch of ageing music hacks, several of whom used to host the "The Old Grey Whislte Test" in the 70's-80's. The chat is random and on the lesser discussed subjects ... why are all (male) ban pianists ugly, the weirdest things rock stars take on tour, the best heckle ever e.t.c. Because these journalists have seen it all their conversations are witty, revelationary and intelligent. In addition each podcast ends with a "H.O.R.A." (Hoary Old Rock Anecdote) which are hilarious.

Anyway, just thought I'd mention it....

In the UK there is this talent show for rock bands called 'Orange Unsigned Act'. I believe it is on ITV2. I zapped onto it today just when this guy Tommy Reilly performed 'Mr Brightside' on piano. It was fucking amazing. I haven't been able to find this performance on youtube yet but I did find this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zCpPqF4BnU and this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SImaYk5d ... re=related

If you like Ryan Adams you should really check this out.

Another band I 'discovered' last week is Eden James. Just signed for EMI in Europe and apparently very hot in Greece (no pun intended). Anyone know them?

About Eden James:

Eden sings a bit like Lou Reed does I have to say. The guitarist (one of them) is actually working for the same company as I do (I found out last week). Nice guy.

I don't really like the killers at all, but this is a great cover. His other 2 songs were pretty good as well. Goes to show, passion is what music needs.

Thanks for the post.

I have to disagree. That's one of the worst pieces of crap I've ever heard in my life. He was like a pitchless, nasal, talent-free David Grey sound alike.

I felt he gave a rubbish song some passion. Although there might be a reason he is unsigned, his voice was pretty bad will agree with you there, but I thought his songs weren't too terrible. Better than a lot of crap floating around at the moment.

Awesome, thanks for sharing that link. Totally fascinating performance. I don't think I'd buy a record to hear that voice, but you're right.... there is a something really endearing about the performance. The kid's got something. I don't know what it is, but he's got it. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a lot better with a few years' work.

One question: Is he from Glasgow, or Newark?

This guy is so incredibly sincere, there is nothing fake in his performance. That's why he is probably not going to make it in the music industry. He'll be eaten alive by slick managers and money orientated record companies. I really hope he'll end up with a small record company that will allow him to make the music he wants.

I thought this guy was from Cardiff but the accent is more like Glasgow I have to say.

lol. I hadn't listened until just now but I had to after you lot are all talking about it. I think I can see why he's unsigned too :blush.gif: . I can't play the piano at all (despite owning my Nan's old one) but I think I can sing better than that! (and btw, my singing is awful).

That accent definately sounds Scottish to me btw.

He is sincerely crap at singing. He's an ok keyboard player, I suppose. Maybe he could get a job at a piano bar.

Anybody else out there seen the new big pink book on/by the Clash? I gave it to myself for Xmas and while there's some cognitive dissonance in seeing a punk band given the deluxe coffeetable book treatment, I'm really enjoying it.

I've been looking for a third coffee table sized book to go with my Salvador Dali and Suicide Girls ( :excited.gif: ) books. Sounds like the Clash book, I saw it at Borders Books, might just do the trick. I love their music and that of Joe Strummer when he was fronting the Mescaleros.

Someone has produced a list of the all-time top 2000 music video's in NL. It's all linked to Youtube so suppose you could just search yourself but there's stuff here I'd not even remotely think of looking for.
