UEFA Cup!
Very big fixture. Very interesting, but not necessarily a must-win. If we beat Slavia Prague at home, we normally advance to the next round. Anything from this game would be a fantastic little extra.
2,900 Ajax supporters in attendance (the tickets were sold out in an eyewink) and I will be one of them!

Me too. HSV is a bit on the downslope and Ajax is rising with more and more players getting fit.aveslacker schreef:I actually have a good feeling about this. I think the boys will be up for it and will get a result.Blind3 schreef:Piece of cake
HSV has a pretty good team but we don't have to be intimidated by the atmosphere in Hamburg. It's time for Ajax' resurrection in Europe!!

I think this is going to be a very difficult fixture. It will depend on whether Hamburg decide to rest any of their first team. I watched last Sunday's match against Werder Bremen and they looked very good, lots of quickness in midfield (something that often causes difficulty for our defense). I would be happy with a draw but am not optimistic as I think Hamburg gets at least one goal and after last Sunday, it is not clear who we will get the matching goal from.
Of course it will be Thanksgiving Day here in the US and maybe that will bring the team some good luck.

Fact is that this fixture is not crucial to HSV or Ajax. We simply have to beat Slavia Prague at the ArenA (that will see us through). Hamburg only played one game and have the full three points. It's not a must-win and I don't think it will be an 'all or nothing' battle. A draw is not unthinkable (and would be a great result, obviously).
Also, HSV are a good side, but we shouldn't exaggerate. I don't think they're better than the Werder Bremen side that beat us 3-0 a few years ago - and they sure as hell aren't as good as the Bayern München side that stuffed us 4-0 in 2004. I mean: Joris Mathijssen is a starter for them and he's not exactly a legend, in my book.
Don't get me wrong: I think we'll lose (by a small margin), not because HSV are brilliant, but because they are more experienced, taller and physically stronger. We will be vulnerable on set pieces (I expect at least one goal from a corner or free kick), but it wouldn't surprise me if we score a goal ourselves.
I'll say: 2-1 Hamburg, could be 1-1 if we're a bit lucky and they - at some point - decide that a draw will do.

I agree with Ko, I see us losing 2-1, but we could draw or win with a little luck. While it's not a must win for us, a win here would pretty much set us up to go through. With a win, we'd have 6 points in the group and have the two wins we need before the Slavia game.
If we lost and Slavia beats Zilinia (which they probably will), then our game against Slavia becomes a must-win as we're both sitting on 3 points after 3 games. I think we'd all of course rather get the win here than have it come down to what could be a nerve-wracking game against Slavia, which honestly I don't have a great feeling about. Let's just get the win out of the way tomorrow

From the Sports Illustarted website:
Ajax fans riot in Hamburg
HAMBURG, Germany (AP) -Three undercover policemen were threatened by Ajax fans before Thursday's UEFA Cup game against Hamburger SV.
One officer pulled out his gun but did not have to fire the weapon after he and two other plainclothes colleagues were squeezed into a dead-end street late Wednesday by about 50 Dutch supporters, police spokesman Ralf Meyer said Thursday. The 13 ringleaders of the group were later caught in a bar on Hamburg's notorious Reeperbahn strip and 13 of them were taken into custody.
All were later released apart from their alleged leader, who is known to police of both countries as a violent fan and who is banned from attending games, Meyer said. The fan could face charges.
Another group of between 30 and 40 Dutch supporters thrashed a bar on the Reeperbahn, Meyer said.
Hamburg police have called up 800 officers for duty for Thursday's game.
