"You've missed the point! It's the fact that the "porn" money got them out of Division 3 and hence up to the Premiership.......the lack of more "porn" money coming in has meant that they've failed.....again! "
No, it's you that's missed the point. The three clubs that were relegated were the three that spent the least money on new players.

I saw that too a few days ago. It would be interesting to see how this compares with other leagues and over the last few seasons. The Purple Cow schreef:"You've missed the point! Is JC going to get involved???
"Marco van Basten has revealed he has not spoken to Johan Cruyff since the two Dutch greats fell out over plans to revive Ajax.
Van Basten, currently preparing Holland for next month's Euro 2008, will take over the Amsterdam giants after the tournament.
He had been due to work alongside Cruyff at Ajax but the two disagreed over how to take the club forward.
However, Van Basten does expect to resume relations with Cruyff, who has frequently helped out with advice about the national team.
"It needs time before everything will be as it was," Van Basten told De Pers.
"It is something that can be healed again though. But I think it will take until after Euro 2008 for that to happen."

What can anyone tell me about Jan Poortvliet as a manager? Yes, I know he played 5 million matches for PSV, but he was just appointed head coach at Southampton, and since my English team is Saints, I'm very curious if you all know more than I do (which is nothing) about his manager skills. From the brief research I've done, it appears most of his manager experience has been taking smaller, lower division clubs in Belgium and Netherlands with a very low budget, getting them into a playoff/promotion position, and then moving on to the next lower division club project.
Also... Mark Woote? Another Dutchman, but was currently managing somewhere in the middle east (Qatar, maybe?). He has also been appointed at Southampton as Poortvliet's assistant.
Thanks for any knowledgeable info/opinion you might have!

Well it said in the Independent today that one of the reasons he was hired is that he was cheaper than the guy he's just replaced.....not necessarily a negative but it wouldn't fill me with confidence if I was Saints fan (which I certainly wasn't on the last day of the season btw as their win could have sent Blackpool down.....)AjaxPDX schreef:What can anyone tell me about Jan Poortvliet as a manager?

An old or auld Scots name for Edinburgh. Reek refers to the clowds of chimney smoke that would envelope Edinburgh in the days when coal and wood were the common source of fuel in homes and industry.aveslacker schreef:I like that kit. The vertical sponsor is a very cheeky copy but the shirt is similar in style to their old 1970's shirt (http://www.toffs.com/invt/2025). I'm a bit young to remember it but saw it for sale as a TOFFS replica before.......jamcocteau schreef:Just seen the Heart of Midlothian new away kit - mmmmmmm wonder which club they borrowed this strip from, even down to the sponsors name being vertical

Two football stories which left me shaking my head for different reasons . Both were on Gol TV News tonight .
1. Sevilla have been denied by the Spanish FA in their request to retire the jersey number 16, previously worn by Puerta , their defender who was stricken by a heart attack on the pitch and who died three days later in hospital. Honoring a fallen teammate is a good and decent thing to do. The FA's rejection on the grounds that shirt numbers must be consective between , I believe, 1 and 16. How about FA's concentrating on issues like racism, fan violence, diving, officials who shouldn't be,etc..?
2. Gol TV ran a story tonight about a proposed new ownership at Lazio. At first I was sure the Mussolini family were making a move. Nope, it's only a group which reportedly involves the Napoli area Mafia and everyones favorite Welsh sounding Italy(Nazio) and America ( Cosmos)playing striker Giorgio Chinaglia. Just what Italy needs to get rid of the black eyes the last scandal caused.

Did anyone else watch the Hibs v Barcelona game from Murrayfield, Edinburgh tonight? Just a little bit one sided, Barcelona were 4-0 up inside 20 minutes, it finished 6-0 but could have been 10.
The Setanta commentators sounded more disapointed than the Hibs manager though who was very philosophical, the funiest quote of the night, on 89 minutes of the most one-sided game you could imagine stating that it was all OK because at least Barca didn't have the monopoly on exquisite skills

This is a heading I haven't seen for a number of years:
Brilliant Bosnich steals show
http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/brillian ... ow-124080/
Playing his first competitive match in seven years, Bosnich stole the show as the Mariners crushed Sydney FC 3-0 to get their cup campaign back on track...
Good to see the guy back, albeit at a much lower level. Seems to have his head back on straight again. Good luck to him.

I have seen something rare tonight. Worthing played Arsenal reservesand for the last 40 minutes every Arsenal player was english!!! They won 5-1 and looked good but it was their full reserve side and in fact 15 of the 18 squad were english.
Mind you their first team squad is a little different with only Walcott and Ramsay British.
PS In case this is lost on anyone the big joke in England is that Arsenal do not play english guys.Whether any break into the first team as regulars is another matter!!
