Horrible news for the rest of the season, losing our best defender from an already weak backline.
It's a shame, but it's not any of our decision to make, only Jaap's. I wasn't aware of the recent circumstances Ko mentioned, and keeping them in mind, it certainly makes sense for him to do now.
Sounds like the repercussions of not playing in Europe are worse than I thought they would be. I rest of the league season looks a little more bleak now; I'll wait until we're knocked out of the Dutch Cup before writing of the whole season.

Stam: ,,Ajax is the best club in Holland. I am grateful to the club and to Martin van Geel that they got me back to Holland a year and a half ago. I also want to thank the supporters. They made me feel right at home in the ArenA.”
After the press conference, Stam received a standing ovation from the Dutch journalists in attendance. That says a lot, if not everything about the defender. (Ajax.nl)

You have to understand it was a difficult decision, and dont forget his father past away recently. Anyway its time for Van der Wiel to fill the void. As for Davids, if he wants to retire, I can live with that, after all we got good midfielders coming through e.g. Sarpong and Van der Heijden.
thanks so much for letting us down,
btw will Davids be back soon ?

Come on guys, he is not that bad, I am sure this is Phillipe's way of showing how much he cares for Ajax.

No worry. It is has become sadly common to be insulted on this board when the opinion is not the same as the one of the loud minority (CL elimination, HTC, Jaakke....remember ?).aveslacker schreef:I agree, although he should lay off Stam. The trouble is that facts did not always prove me wrong, to say the least ("facts are stubborn" as said KM).
Anyways, about Stam, he was of course a great player in general. But he hardly played more than one season for Ajax. And it would have helpful if he had played till the end of the season. So I am not sure his farewell will be as emotionnal as for major Ajax players.
We'll see.
Appie, stay strong !

My 2p worth for what that's worth.
If and when Stam or anyone else 'retires' and then turns up somewhere else then I'll agree we have been badly let down.
In this case though, the guy has retired - and that's that.
Someone mentioned the Sparta game as being amongst his reasoning and tbh, he had a stinker. I can actually respect the guy a great deal here, he could have hung around collecting his wages but instead has decided he's not up to it as he was once and is walking away - respect to the guy for that.
I agree some recent games, especially in Europe have been awful but we're still unbeaten - some crisis so there isn't even that much of a sinking ship to desert if that's what some think he's doing......
P.S. do I get a prize for 1200 posts?

Is there a translation anywhere of his speech Ko?Kowalczyk schreef:Nice hurrah to the big man yesterday...
Nice speech, too! Most players will only say one or two words. Stam had a pretty long speech. Nice words.
Take care, Jaap. We'll see you around.

According to Hugo Borst, the beginning of the end was back in May, when Ajax were playing Heerenveen. HTC was giving his half time bollocking when Stam shouted "Shut your gob!".....

“If I wanted you to understand it, I would have explained it better.”
I've always admired Jaap Stam as a player , even if I absolutely can't stand PSV , ManUre , or AC Milan . I'm glad Ajax took a chance on a player of his quality and glad he was one of ours for even a fleeting moment. Good Luck Jaap!!!!!
