KNVB Cup Opponents 2006-2007

The Dutch cup competition (previously known as Amstel Cup and Gatorade Cup) has its old name back (KNVB Cup) and underwent some major changes. Holland's professional clubs, including those representing The Netherlands in UEFA competition, will enter as early as in the second round. The draw for the first and second rounds took place at the KNVB headquarters in Zeist today. For Ajax an away game at Young RKC Waalwijk, the Eredivisie club's reserves team, came out of the bowl. The match will be played on 19, 20 or 21 September (exact date t.b.c.).

Ajax.nl just announced the definitive date and kick-off time for the Young RKC fixture: Wednesday 20 September, 19:45 CET.

The most remarkable games were the five in which a higher division team got knocked out by a lower division (or amateur) side.

H = Hoofdklasse amateurs
F = First Division
E = Eredivisie

Rijnsburgse Boys (H) - Fortuna Sittard (F): 1-0
SC Genemuiden (H) - FC Omniworld (F): 3-2
FC Eindhoven (F) - Heracles Almelo (E): 3-2
ASWH (H) - Cambuur Leeuwarden (F): 4-2
Achilles '29 (H) - FC Volendam (F): 0-0 - Achilles win penalty shoot-out

Ajax were not the only top side to embarrass themselves against a very modest opponent (Young RKC Waalwijk). PSV played an amateur team (Kozakken Boys, playing in the Hoofdklasse) and after 50 minutes the score was still 0-0. They won 0-2 in the end and one of their goals was a penalty. That's not a very impressive result, either. Not that it makes Ajax's performance more understandable, by the way.

I'd say both performances were easily understood. Top class teams travelling out to the back of nowhere(in football terms) to play a game they know they can't lose. They're just going through the motions. It's like if an astronaut has to fly a crop-duster. I dare say he'd get the job done, but his mind would probably be thinking about bigger things.

F-word are now playing Veendam (First Division side) and they went 1-0 down after 12 minutes. Veendam were the better side in the first 15 minutes anyway. It is now 1-1 (goal by Lucius), but Veendam are doing very well. Interesting game and Feyenoord are having a hard time.

Also, the biggest game in the second round: Heerenveen 0, Roda 0. (after 30 mins).

Yeah - that was definitely in.

(Cross from Buys, finish by Van Hooydonk via the underside of the cross-bar. Ball bounced behind the line, very clearly - but the ref didn't see it).

Which only proves that Feyenoord and PSV are not at all convincing, and very 'beatbable' this season.

And so are we, as a matter of fact, so it's going to be an interesting season!

Dutch teams > French,Portuguese,Belgian. And Eredivisie actually have Dutch players in it.

Maybe slightly lower than France`s " Le Championat" but way above the Jupiter league and Portugal. :yes:

Way above Portugal...? I'm not sure.

The five best/biggest leagues in Europe are England, Italy, Spain and Germany and France - I don't think anyone will disagree. The exact order of this five...? Oh well, you can argue about that - and the same goes for the leagues that are generally regarded as the numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9 (Holland, Portugal, Greece, Turkey).

That's where Holland stands: in the bottom half of the top ten of European football leagues. We're is normally one of Europe's best of the rest: smaller than the big ones, but bigger than the small ones. No 'small' country won as many European trophies as Holland. And Ajax are, historically, the by far biggest football club from a small country (in fact: Ajax are the only club from a small country that - when it comes to trophies won - is seriously up there, right next to the major clubs from major countries).

These are things to be proud of. There's a lot you can say about the Dutch league, but we can - over all - be moderately proud of where we stand, I think.

Personally, I love the Dutch league.

Almost every club in Holland has a remarkable jersey and a remarkable history of its own. The stadiums are - in most cases - reasonably sized. They're always full and they're all brand-new and state of the art.

It's a nice football league that is (very important!) still affordable for the real supporters. Football has not been stolen from the people yet, like in England.

Seriously: I kind of like it.
