Incentives are marvellous things. Take away the incentive to dive (by issuing fines or suspending players who do it). Simple.

It's an idea but I think there are better ways to make the game more attractive. Marco van Basten has interesting ideas on it. Ofcourse for the very traditional footballwatchers, they're not at all interesting.

I think I remember Marco saying that FIFA should try a 5 foul rule (or something similar) as in basketball. 5 fouls and your automatically off. This would help with the crappy touchy fouls that stop the flow of play.

Also would have helped prolong his career as defenders wouldn't have hacked him down 10 times a game and only getting 1 yellow at best.

I would consider myself a soccer traditionalist in most cases, but sometimes it really doesn't hurt to try a new idea. Remember when you could backpass to the keeper? How stupid does it look when you see an old game now and a defender passes back 5 times in a row and wasted 3 min of play?

easy. get them on video wherever possible. this is for any kind of dodgy play.

Aussie Rules football used to be a thugs game. Behind the scene beat ups etc, over the past 10 years they have used video footage to clean this game up such a large amount, it hardly seems the same game anymore.

If you dive and the referee misses it, it gets picked up on video and you get suspended, or fined (and something that will actually hurt, not just $500 etc).

the more strict they are at enforcing laws and issuing something that actually hurts the club or player, the sooner this sh*t will stop. play acting is one of the worst part of football. i f*cking hate it...sorry for the language, but it really gets me going pissed off :aai:

Seriously though, I'm with you on this one, the video panel after the game has finished seems to work reasonably well and I'd prefer that to the stop-start of the game if they examined every dubious tackle as it happened. It's about time they started handing out "proper" punishments too but they can start that with the Spanish FA and the "fines" to teams with rascist fans (but hey, that's another discussion entirely....)

I just saw the Juventus game, this italians are so lucky. They don't deserve to win but they always manage to do it. How many Ajax fans will be going to Milan for the game against Inter? As I was seeing the juventus game today I thought it was really a shame that such a big team can never fill up their stadium. Inter is different they have a big crowd but I would really love to see a huge amount of Ajax fans supporting the team there.

Well... forget it. Only 800 tickets sold so far. A number of Ajax fans won't buy tickets the 'official' way (they'll get them in Milan), but it's going to be 1,000 tops.

The reason for this is obvious: This is the fourth time we go to Milan and the San Siro in less than three and a half years' time (1x Inter and 2x Milan since Fall 2002). Many Ajax fans that I know are saying: "Don't feel like going there again." An extra reason for that is the fact that Milan isn't the best place in the world atmosphere-wise: pubs are not easy to find, many of them don't sell alcohol to away fans (or won't let you in at all), police presence is overwhelming (and quite grumpy) and you hardly get to mee any local fans in town before the game. Unlike the English or Danish fans we've met this season, Italian are normally hardly up for a few beers and some footie chatter before the game.

Many Ajax fans didn't particularly enjoy Milan as a city on previous occasions. And the chance of a win isn't too huge either, let's face it. That's why interest is low. Pity, but it's true.

That sounds rather optimistic with juventus, Barça, AC Milan or Bayern still left.

But Chelsea out is good news, and I would be very happy if real Mad were eliminated too.

The best of all will be when eliminate those fat cats from inter Milan next week.

Blimey the teams that are left are hardly "poor" clubs are they ?.The Champions League is all about fat cat clubs maximising their potential earnings by playing as often as possible,hence a league & not a straight knockout until the later rounds.If you look closely though you will find a team called Ajax still left in this competition so lets not bite the hand that feeds us too soon.On the other hand though,if this competition ever evolves into a European super league then the so called smaller teams really are in the S*$t & i would be the first to laugh at the demise of Chelski etc.

Yeah, I agree. I wouldn't think of Terry being the type of player to pull that kind of crap. It did look like a stumble to me, too.

It was, in my opinion, a clear dive. The defender came in, got the ball (iirc), Terry's rammed his foot into the ground, his hands flew up and he threw his head back. Pretty clear simulation, imo. To say nothing of the fact that he appeared to be offside (although that's not relevant to his diving).

John Terry is a class player, no doubt about it. I agree that he is an excellent defender and seems to be a good guy off the pitch. And given that Deco was on the field, he was far from the worst play actor out there, but it looked like a dive to me. I have a very hard time believing that a professional athlete with world class balance who is capable of slaloming through opposing defenses would suddenly lose his footing when he happens to be in the opponent's penalty area right after a defender dispossesses him of the ball. Seems a little bit of a strange coincidence to me.

It shouldn't be surprising. I have no doubt that any one of Mourinho's players would do the occasional schwalbe if they thought it would win the game (or get them more playing time).

In any event, I'm glad they lost.

Yeah, me too. I have no special feelings whatsoever for Barça, but in general I love the fact that a positive, attacking team beat a negative, cynical and ultra-defensive team.

I just want to see a team who play good entertaining footy win . Chelski are boring and I am glad they lost to a team like Barca.( Unlike my hate for Moan U I have no problems with Chelsea winning our premiership I just cannot stand their style of play.)

I will be cheering Arsenal on tonight and at least we will see good footy.

I will also want to see Liverpool win as well, even though they never score many goals.
