Is this the thread where we were discussing pronunciation earlier?

Anyway, just wondering, what happens to the gutteral "G" in Dutch when there is a consonant after it, e.g. de Graaf?

It's still there I think. Makes no difference. The phelm still roles around in the mouth. ;) Unless of course my parents can no longer speak Dutch properly as they have been out of the country for sometime.

It remains a gutteral g, immediately 'flowing' into what we call a 'rolling', very loud r.

In other words: foreigners are seriously f*cked here. Don't try it at home.

To make it interesting, now add schap to the end (ie: de graafschap). :D

An interesting editorial I came across around talented players being portrayed as the villans
http://wwiii.sbs.com.au/opinions/index.php3?id=68333

While reading this I kept getting reminded of the little p*ick Kohler. How many more years would van Basten have kept playing if this sh*thead had kept his ankle crushing tackles at home?

Then I remember his sending off in the UEFA Cup Final (his final game I think) and remember that there is some justice in football :xyxthumbs:

I can't agree with the author at all. There is no doubt that Maradona was a brilliant player, and that he certainly didn't deserve getting elbowed in the face. But that doesn't mean he is justified in handling the ball over the line. There is no justification for that.

Similarly, reasonable people can agree that del Horno did indeed barge into Messi. I certainly see it that way. But then the author glosses over what happened to del Horno, and that Messi is victim because the someone at the bbc news service observed him play acting and pointed it out.

This is absurd. First of all, there is the small matter of the red card that del Horno received for his troubles. Second, my observation is that the majority of commentators not named Mourinho agreed that the red card was deserved in light of the actual incident and del Horno's cynical tackle moments earlier (I have no doubt that Mourinho instructed him to be physical with Messi).

Finally, regardless of whether or not Messi was actually fouled, the fact remains that he sat there on the ground, looked up to see if anyone was watching him and then grabbed his head as if he'd been shot. That is cynical play acting of the worst kind, and it should be pointed out. The fact that he was fouled by del Horno doesn't justify his actions, any more than Maradona's getting roughed up by an English defender justifies the "Hand of God."

Messi is a brilliant player and doesn't need to stoop so low as to employ such cheap tricks.

And while I'm at it, the man who coaches Robben and Duff accusing (with no apparent trace of irony) another player of diving is pretty rich.

Why does everyone conveniently forget that Del Horno himself was rolling around just as much as Messi in an attempt to avoid the red card? There certainly didn't seem to be anything wrong with him when he got up and left the field.

Ever wondered how Ronaldinho did that commercial when he hits the bar three times in a row.

Here's a look at how it could've been made.

With any luck, a relatively well-rested Ajax can beat a tired and shell-shocked PSV this weekend. I really think we have a chance. If Huntelaar or Rosenberg (or anyone else for that matter; I just think it would most likely be one of those guys) can put one in early, our boyz can really put the light bulbs on the backfoot.

I'll be thinking about it while I'm painting my guest bedroom. X'C

Check http://planet.gnome.org/

If the Dutchies could check the second post, it seems to be talking about Ajax-Roda.

The strange thing is that the post is on a sort of blog of the Gnome community.

It's the guys first visit to the Amsterdam Arena [his first live soccergame, too]. He describes the way supporters arrive at the Arena and mentions the high prices for beer in the Arena. It's clear that the author isn't really soccer-minded. The article is not really that interesting.

I just found this article about Amsterdam funerals for homeless people and other people who die alone in the city.

http://in.news.yahoo.com/060409/137/63fj9.html

For me it just sums up what I really like about Amsterdam and Dutch society in general. Despite the right wing government, Verdonk and co. it just seems that bit more caring than the UK and the rest of the world.

No doubt, someone will come on here to correct me tales of horror, but this sort of thing in general just tends to renew my faith in human nature at times.......

Re: the 'Holland' thing (what's the difference between 'The Netherlands' and 'Holland'? Currently discussed in the New Players thread).

You can't really compare it to the British situation. Scots will correct you if you refer to them as 'Brits' and they might freak out if you call 'em English, but the situation is a bit different because Great Britain is actually an official name for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, whether they like it or not. Also, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own governments and national football teams, for example, so it's all a bit different.

You could compare it to the fact that many people used to refer to the Soviet Union as 'Russia' and to the players of the USSR football team as 'Russians'.

In provinces like Friesland, Noord-Brabant and Limburg you might actually bump into people who will correct you if you talk about 'Holland' ("I live in The Netherlands but not in Holland"). But it's not too much of an issue to the average Dutchie. Many Frisians and Limburgers will simply refer to their country as 'Holland' when abroad. And they will sing along with the old Hup Holland Hup chants during games of the national team.

It's not much of a touchy subject, though. I would reckon that at least 90% of the Dutchies finds it completely normal that foreigners refer to The Netherlands as 'Holland'.

Actually, it isn't. The official name for those four territories is actually the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain refers only to the three nations that occupy the island of Britain, i.e. Wales, Scotland and England.
