I remember listening to Radio Hilversum back in the mid 80's and there being talk of Ajax trying to bring back former players Lerby and Arnesen. If Ajax had succeded in that attempt PSV may not have asserted such a stranglehold on the Eredivisie. As it was PSV signed Arnesen, Lerby and Willem Kieft amongst other notables, such as Ivan Nielsen and Ruud Gullit from F'noord. PSV with a very experienced line up showed great consistency in winning 4 successive Eredivisie Schaals and the Champions Cup of 1988..
Conversely, Ajax relied on home grown talents such as Rijkaard, Silooij, van Basten and Bosman. The younger players at Ajax, such as the above mentioned, tended to be the most experienced players, in terms of european club competition and International football, with the exceptions of Arnold Muhren and former AZ player Ronald Spelbos.I think this relative lack of maturity in the side ,as compared to that of PSV, cost Ajax the opportunity to contest the Champions cup. It would have been very interesting to see how Ajax, bolstered with players such as Lerby and Arnesen, would have performed in the Champions Cup. Given that they did win the Cup Winners Cup in that period, i like to think that Ajax would have regained the greatest club prize in football far earlier than 1995.

Van Der Vaart 'new Keegan'
PA Sport

Hamburg director of football Dietmar Beiersdorfer has likened his club's recent signing Rafael van der Vaart to Kevin Keegan, a legend at the north German club.

Van der Vaart joined Hamburg from Ajax in the off season with many claiming his career was on a downward curve.

However, a move away from the pressure of the Dutch media, who have treated him as the nation's answer to David Beckham, has helped the 22-year-old midfielder rediscover some of his best form and fire Hamburg into contention for the title.

"I can imagine things heading in the same direction as with Kevin Keegan," said Beiersdorfer.

Keegan was a key figure in Hamburg's most recent success, scoring 32 goals in 90 games as Hamburg won the Bundesliga in 1979, and Van der Vaart could be the man to bring the title back to the club for the first time since 1983 - the year he was born.

"Rafael is simply incredible," said Hamburg defender Khalid Bouhlarouz.

"He is a real number 10 and anything I can say about him wouldn't do him justice."

With Van der Vaart, Hamburg have made a phenomenal start to the season and are currently unbeaten in 19 games, second in the Bundesliga and in the group phase of the UEFA Cup.
=======================
Good luck to vdv. Can only be good news for the dutch team.

So what are we complaining about really? Van der Vaart needed to get away from Holland and Ajax to get back to his good old form. Hamburg are going great with VDV. Ajax can now let Sneijder have more responsibility, which has resulted in him being excellent, which leads to a better Ajax.

Everybody should be happy with how this situation, as VDV wasn't good at Ajax for a long time.

That's right. Good for him, good for Oranje, and -- since Sneijder is playing well so far -- good for Ajax.

Whose complaining. Its worked out well for all parties: vdv, ajax, hamburg and oranje. And since vdv has left he and sneijder have stopped getting in each others way on the field. both players are having the best years for some time. :xyxthumbs:

If he was still at Ajax vdv would still be having a better then he had the previous two seasons. I saw an interview with him on the weekend and something along the lines of 'Koeman was a crap coach and he couldn't motivate me'
Now the interview was in Dutch so I couldn't understand much of what was said but it is clear that he felt he stagnated under Koeman. Add to that the fact that his play started to improve after Blind came on board and it seems clear Koeman couldn't handle him. (but then we all knew that)

Anyway, Koeman-bashing is getting to be a tired subject but we can now add vdv as another former associate to come out and publicly criticise him and his methods, along with Van Gaal, and probably more to follow.

about van der Vaart, I wonder if it is sensible to blame Koeman : vdv played a few months more under Blind, and it did not change much for him, did it ?

Somehow I don't think mr Agricola shares that much about the past medical adventures of Juventus.

If Juve are any smart they should've stopped thair systematic cheating some time ago.

Like the title though, I think Ko would call it: "Liamesque" :headbang: , am I right?

Winston Bogarde

Bericht door Kowalczyk » di nov 08, 2005 4:05 pm

Former Ajacied Winston Bogarde has decided to call it a day, after five years of trying to get back into the world of professional football. On 26 December 2000 he last saw official action for Chelsea. He sustained a serious knee injury and needed years to recover. Chelsea wanted to drop him, but Bogarde refused to go. He had a deal until the summer of 2004 and would, eventually, stay at Chelsea until it expired, becoming known as a moneygrabber.

Since the summer of 2004 Bogarde has attempted to find a new club, but the ones he was interested in weren't interested in him. He has now decided to call it quits.

Bogarde played for SVV, Excelsior, Sparta, Ajax, AC Milan, FC Barcelona and Chelsea. He also earned 20 caps for Holland.

Well, I hope you mean only last 2-3 years! He was good defender and he played almost whole his life in first squads of big and good teams. It is normal, that if player's getting old he sits more on a bench, but when he was at his best form he waws really good, solid defender.

He had some really good years at ajax and played with the oranje for some time too but just like many players that leave Ajax he started a downward spiral after he left his level of play kept decreasing up to the point we all know.
Hope he dosent loose his retirement money on craps and poker :D

The press have made some comments on Bogarde's retirement.

To quote Chelsea fans thought he had retired in August 2000 ie before joining them. Barca fans thought he retired in 1999 as he did crap all in his final season there.

This guy will always stand for what is wrong in EPL 4 years at £ 40000 a week never injured but played 4 full games and 8 at sub. Not good enough but paid a stupid salary.

Never has anyone been paid so much for so little.
