At least a 'true' artist has covered it and not some 5 piece boy band, who release it as their first single, sells a bucket load only until their 2nd single comes out and its total rubbish and we never hear from them again...sorry...some pent up agression to 'fake' music.

Long live real artists who:
a. actually write a decent lyric like...'a kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder' - Jeff Buckley - and not lyrics like 'i like you, you like me' etc.
b. play an instrument or
c. have the ability to create amazing sounds and loops from a PC etc
d. can play live
e. work their arses off to get where they are and not just have some record guy turn up and say...'hey you look good...you should be a singer...sign here'.
f. have NOT won a contest called 'something idol'

In the Ajax vs Heerenveen match thread I wrote that I won't be going to the game, because my dad and I will go see Bob Dylan live at the Ahoy' in Rotterdam. To which Philippe replied...

I can understand why you say that you will be watching Bob Dylan and not listening to him (voice). Have a good time though. :band:

He's right: Bob Dylan's voice sounds like he just had a piece of sandpaper for dinner. He can't reach the high notes anymore and in most cases he doesn't even try the sing the exact melodies of older songs.

So I guess Philippe's right when he says that most people buy a ticket because they want to see Bob Dylan, rather than hear him.

Here's what I love about his concerts:

1. the rhythm of his lyrics (absolutely unique: only one man flows like Dylan)
2. his band (fantastic)
3. the Man Himself (he is a 100% mysterious figure and a total rockstar; he is so cool I can't believe it)

Bob Dylan fans have their own milestones nowadays...

"Did you see that? He smiled!"

"Do you remember that Berlin show in October 1994? That's where he said 'thank you'! Twice!"

I think this is fifth time I'll see him (every single time it was at the Ahoy' in Rotterdam).

By the way: did anyone watch Martin Scorsese's 'grande Dylan documentary' (No Direction Home) on the BBC? F*cking hell, what a great film... Absolutely fantastic.

I missed the documentary. My wife does not like Dylan and makes me wear headphones if I want to listen to him. I agree he does not have a great voice but he is one of the best songwriters of all time.

My alltime favourite group is still The Byrds and yes I still love Mr Tambourine Man , Bob's version as well.

This is my first posting on the music thread. I should add that I am 54 and a child of the 60's.

I've seen the great Bawbster three times and in all honesty, the thrill is gone. Bawb is always gonna be Bawb but his concerts are just a little bit short of ridiculous at times. He's a very lucky man to have written so many classics, they are probably the only thing that keep him from being booed off the stage. As for your list, I kinda agree with your first point. It's fun trying to guess what song the Bawbster is digging into. But his band is horrible! I don't want to see Bawb get drowned out by a bunch of studio-musicians, no matter how well they play. And what's up with Bawb playing the piano at times, I couldn't even make out what he was doing. As for the "coolness": last time I saw B., it was sorta ruined by the most ridiculous intro ever. "Ladies and Gentleman, A Legend In The Sixties, An Artist In The Seventies, A Searcher In The Eighties, A Comeback In The Nineties And Still Going Strong: BAWB DYLAN". I almost expected Elvis & his jumpsuit to take the stage. Best part of the night was some disillusioned hippie standing next to me, screaming "Come on Bob, start the revolution" in a sarcastic tone of voice. Lots of snickering.

Bawb is one of the greatest ever, but these days he's not a very big performer. He has all the right to play as much as he likes, but for anyone to claim that his shows have more than historic value is besides the truth. Too bad. But beauty walks a razors edge, maybe one day he'll make it his again.

I didn't know that, SPL... I am a great Byrds fan. I have all of their records and to me they were the starting point of a fantastic musical journey. I explored the whole family tree: from The Byrds to CSN&Y, Dillard & Clark, Poco, Gram Parsons, etcetera. They also got me into the 'sixties west coast sound' in general (early Grateful Dead, Love, Strawberry Alarm Clock, etc. etc.).

Of course I have Johnny Rogan's 'Byrds Bible' (The Byrds - Timeless Flight Revisited. The Sequel.).

Fantastic music. I even interviewed McGuinn when he released the Byrds re-releases (with bonus tracks) on Columbia/Legacy. Do you know his 'Folk Den' project? Well worth checking out! Evert month he records one old American folk song and posts it onto his website for free downloading. I still want to burn all of the songs on CD once: twelve songs (one year) on each CD.

Anyway. Bob rocks. I didn't like all of his live shows, but I definitely disagree with Thibb. Time Out Of Mind was a modern classic. He's definitely not just 'history'.

The introduction you quoted is pretty bad indeed, though... Yuk. I saw him five times and the introduction was the same each time: 'Ladies and gentleman, please welcome Columbia recording artist... Bob Dylan!' Simple as that. Modern bands never do introductions like that, so it had a certain magic to it the first time I heard it.

I saw the film "No direction home". I really loved it. That guy can make film about music. The last walz isn't all that bad either. I love both Bob and the Band.

I also saw Bob live the other week. Second time I saw him. I liked him better this time, the other time was in Roskilde and the scene didn't fit him IMO.

But I must say that I do not think his live performances can score better than his music. I mean, it's really cool just seeing him there, live, the man the myth but as a music concert I've seen many better concerts.

"Controversial rock star Pete Doherty has written a new song to mark QPR's FA Cup win.

No, that's not a deliberate mistake.

The Babyshambles frontman, famed for his wild lifestyle and dating model Kate Moss, revealed details of his ditty after learning Rangers had commissioned a tune from composer Michael Nyman.

"Fair play to Michael Nyman for composing the song for QPR to come out on to the pitch but I've already written a song for when they win the FA Cup," Doherty told The Guardian newspaper.

"He could do the B-side."

Doherty says his unnamed tune is a ska track.

But he might need to do a bit of work on the lyrics, which include the following lines:

As a teenager, Doherty wrote a QPR fanzine 'All Quiet on the Western Avenue', copies of which have inflated in value since his rise to fame.

I was disappointed. I've seen him four or five times now and I loved some of the previous shows, but this time I felt too many songs were simply destroyed by the man's voice, which is pretty much gone. I know: that was already the case when I first saw him, but this time his refusal to sing the original melodies just annoyed me. The only two songs that were really great were Tangled Up In Blue and Highway 61 (as usual; those are always two of the best).

Anyway - I just wanted to share something with you all.

I've been to Switzerland with OPH, AFCA Madnezz, Pizza 5, Jock Cloggie and a few more of the infamous Cockney Cloggies. We f*cking pissed ourselves as usual. A few great stories were added to the Cockney Cloggies Storybook and a few unforgettable quotes were added to the Great Cockney Cloggies Book of Quotes. One of 'em had to do with music and came from the one and only Pizza 5, who admitted that he still loves Rainbow and Status Quo. At some point we were discussing The Beatles and Pizza 5 came up with the following quote.

"I never liked The Beatles. I mean: it's always the same three, simple chords, innit? Like Status Quo, but without the talent."

On the subject of old uns my all time favourite female singer is Kate Bush and she is releasing her first album for 12 years on Monday. Nobody else sounds like her she is unique.

Glad to see discussion of Bob Dylan.Actually saw him and Willie Nelson at a local baseball park over the summer. Not the greatest night in the history of melody ,but to hear the lyrics of two of the greatest ever...AMAZING. I'll see either anytime, anywhere.Great bands behind each. Not too many posts in this thread in days... The last handful was about Bob Dylan and so is this one, at least partly.

The annual International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is in town and they have a 'package' of Dylan documentaries. They will show No Direction Home by Martin Scorsese, but also two remastered versions of old Dylan documentaries from the sixties, a documentary about boxer Rubin 'The Hurricane' Carter (whom Dylan wrote a song about) and - the most interesting and exclusive one - a documentary by Dutch filmmaker Jos de Putter named How Many Roads. In this film he follows a few Dylan fans in the U.S. who have basically devoted their entire life to him and follow him everywhere. The first viewing is in precisely 37 minutes' at the City cinema (Leidseplein) and I'll be there.

Another 'rockumentary' I definitely want to see is The Devil And Daniel Johnston, about cult singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston.

And now for some tremendously important news. Yesterday evening Amsterdam's hottest band that never gets out of the rehearsal room, the formidable Fucking Assholes, have democratically decided to change their name. The name change marks a new step in their career: they recently forced themselves to get their set of punk and indie covers figured out by booking their first ever gig in an as yet unconfirmed venue in the North-Holland province, in early 2006. It will be a very exclusive concert (guestlist only!). The band will invite all the people who will not have the courage to say 'no'.

Anyway: today's big news is that The Fucking Assholes are now...

Ze Germans!!

Hahaha...I laugh at our Rugby team too. I also think our cricketers are full of shit and I actually think its pretty funny when they lose. Oh yeah, and no longer can NZ say they are the last Oceania team to qualify for the WC ;)
