Phoenix 111, San Antonio 106
Suns Not Ready to Set

SAN ANTONIO, May 30 (Ticker) -- Pack a small travel bag. The Western Conference finals are going back to Phoenix.

With Amaré Stoudemire outplaying Tim Duncan down the stretch, the Suns fought off elimination and perhaps created some momentum with a 111-106 victory over the sloppy San Antonio Spurs.

Stoudemire scored 11 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter for the top-seeded Suns, who finally got some stops with the game on the line. Their defense had been decimated in the first three games, all losses that had pushed their magical season to the brink.

The crowd at the SBC Center was sensing a sweep, with many bringing brooms that they waved to taunt the Suns. But the second-seeded Spurs were beaten badly in transition, missed 12 of 23 free throws and never led in the fourth quarter.

Despite its inexplicable performance, San Antonio was within 104-103 after a layup by Manu Ginobili with 1:46 to go. On the next possession, Stoudemire muscled his way over the 7-foot Duncan for a layup.

At the other end, Stoudemire came up with a strip of Duncan, who was making his move in the paint. He was fouled and made 1-of-2 free throws for a 107-103 lead with 1:11 left.

Bruce Bowen drained a 3-pointer, but Stoudemire put in a layup - completing a stunning play started by Steve Nash, who passed while falling backward out of bounds - before making the play of the game.

Duncan took a pass from Ginobili and rose for what appeared to be an uncontested dunk. Stoudemire's hand met the ball as Duncan brought it down and stopped it cold. Stoudemire sealed the win by running down an offensive rebound and finding Nash, who sank two free trows with 6.2 seconds remaining.

Stoudemire made 13-of-23 shots as he eclipsed 30 points for the seventh time in as many games vs. the Spurs this season. Unlike the first three games, he got plenty of help.

Joe Johnson, who missed the first two games with a fractured orbital bone, scored 26 points. Shawn Marion, who had been shut down by Bruce Bowen, scored all 11 points in the second half. The duo combined for 22 points in the third quarter, when the Suns scored 35 points to turn a seven-point deficit into an 87-80 lead.

Nash had 17 points and 12 assists for Phoenix, which shot a blistering 57 percent (44-of-77) and scored 26 fast-break points to ensure Game Five at home Wednesday.

Ginobili scored 28 points but Duncan was held to 15, adding 16 rebounds. The big man had made 30-of-33 free throws through the first three games but sank just 3-of-12 in this one.

Had the Spurs won, they could have had as many as nine days off before the opener of the NBA Finals.

Detroit heeft game 5 verloren van Miami. Zowat iedereen presteerde ondermaats bij The Pistons, terwijl Miami vooral uitstekend verdedigde.

No Wade... No Way

Dwyane Wade could only sit and watch. And when he winced, you could not tell whether he was pained by his strained rib muscle or his team's play.

Playing without Wade, the Miami Heat was run off the court by the Detroit Pistons, who forced Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals with a 91- :scared: 66 victory.

An emerging superstar, Wade had averaged 30 points through the first four games before suffering the injury in the third quarter of Miami's Game 5 win. He tried to work through it but could not and left for good in the fourth quarter.

Wade did not practice Friday but intended to play, going through pregame workouts with Heat assistant Erik Spoelstra while wearing a gel-filled protective wrap. But he apparently felt too much pain and changed back into street clothes, watching helplessly from the bench as Miami's offense grinded to a halt without him.

"Obviously, not having him, that impacted the game so much," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "You know, Dwyane ... makes everybody better. Dwyane has the same effect on the game at both ends. Obviously it helped."

Matched up with a desperate, defensive-minded Detroit, Miami was held under 80 points for just the third time this season - all against the Pistons. The Heat's total was a franchise low for a playoff game, which includes all those 1990s scrums against the New York Knicks.

Without Wade, the Heat had no one to start their offense and no one to bail them out. In the first half, Miami had 14 baskets and 12 turnovers, digging itself a 44-32 hole. It was even worse in the third quarter, which Detroit closed with a 9-0 burst for a 69-45 bulge.

"They're a different ballclub. There's less penetration," Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace said. "Wade likes to get to the basket, so there was less penetration."

"We defended the way we want to defend," Pistons guard Richard Hamilton said. "In the first half, they only had 32 points, so we tried to force them to get turnovers and things like that."

The top-seeded Heat tried to force-feed superstar center Shaquille O'Neal, who has been nursing a bruised thigh throughout the postseason. O'Neal had his best statistical game of the series with 24 points and 13 rebounds but also committed six turnovers - as many as the Pistons.

"We tried to ... give him different looks as opposed to already being behind him on three-quarter, just tried to find a little bit of double(-team) early," Wallace said. "(We) just tried to throw him off, keep him off-balance."

"I think we had trouble taking care of the ball," O'Neal said. "We were right there in the first quarter, but the second quarter we just had too many turnovers. I think we had 19 turnovers and just didn't take care of the ball. They got a lot of easy baskets."

The injuries continued to pile up as well. Swingman Eddie Jones, already playing with a bruised foot, suffered a cut over his right eye in the third quarter that required stitches to close.

Hamilton scored 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting for the second-seeded Pistons, who scored 25 points off 19 forced turnovers and 19 fast-break points. Tayshaun Prince had 16 points and nine rebounds and Chauncey Billups scored 14 points.

"It's just amazing when you're down, the more desperate, the more aggressive you get," Prince said.

"Our half-court defense was not all that bad, but we couldn't rebound and we could not take care of the ball," Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said. "They dominated us. After the first quarter, they totally dominated us and I really don't have a lot else to tell you."

On Monday, Detroit will try for a rare Game 7 road win, which has happened just 16 times in NBA history. Wade is expected to try to play.

"It's win or go home," Heat guard Damon Jones said. "And I don't fish."

"I'm nervous about it," Brown said. "But I hope my players enjoy this. The thing that I dread about Game 7 is for players to worry about making mistakes. I just want them to enjoy it and do the best they can and hopefully the best team will win."

Rasual Butler started for Wade and scored 13 points, including a jumper that gave the Heat their last lead at 20-19 with 9:56 left in the second quarter. They went nearly five minutes without a point as the Pistons rattled off 13 points, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers by Prince.

"They speeded us up a little bit," Jones said. "We turned the basketball over too many times and they got to the open court and got some fast-break points, and it was a free-for-all from there."

Butler's jumper and 3-pointer capped a 12-2 surge that made it a game again as Miami closed to 34-32 with 1:54 to go. But the Heat unraveled again as Hamilton scored five points in a 10-0 burst that closed the half.

Detroit began the third quarter with a 9-2 run and ended it with nine straight points, prompting garbage time.

Geen Dwayne Wade in de finale X'C Zal een niet al te spectaculaire finale worden met de Pistons tegen de Spurs.
Pistons roll on
Detroit overcomes return of Wade to win Game 7

Larry Brown walked through the front door of the Detroit Pistons' packed locker room, scanning the celebration with his eyes aglow and his smile wide.

"Where are my guys?" Brown asked before spotting Lindsey Hunter and telling him he loved him, then working his way to Tayshaun Prince and reaching in for a hand slap.

"That's what we're all about," Brown said.

The pressure of Game 7 didn't faze the defending champions -- not in the slightest.

In a deciding game that stayed close the entire 48 minutes, the Detroit Pistons summoned their experience and played with calmness and poise down the stretch to defeat the Miami Heat 88-82 Monday night in the final game of the Eastern Conference finals.

Now, it's back to the NBA Finals for the team often dismissed as a fluke champion -- a disparaging label if there ever was one, but one the Pistons can shake with four wins against the San Antonio Spurs.

Dwyane Wade played for Miami after missing Game 6 because of a rib muscle injury, but he was only good for brief stretches. He finished with 20 points but didn't score over the final 15 minutes.

"I couldn't be as athletic as I wanted to be, but I did what I could do," Wade said.

Richard Hamilton scored 22 points, Rasheed Wallace added 20 -- including two foul shots that put Detroit ahead for good with 1:26 remaining -- and the Pistons closed the game with a 10-3 run to hand Miami yet another heartbreaking Game 7 loss on its home floor.

"That's what we do!" Hamilton yelled in a jubilant locker room, repeating the phrase over and over, even after he headed to the showers.

Detroit won for the 10th straight time when needing one victory to clinch a series, the second longest such streak behind the Lakers' record 12-game run that ended in 2004. The Pistons also became the first team to win an Eastern Conference finals Game 7 on the road in 23 years. They open the finals Thursday night at San Antonio.

Shaquille O'Neal led Miami with 27 points, but the Heat faltered offensively in the final two minutes -- with Wade the biggest culprit when he forced up a 20-footer that missed badly with 1:13 left.

Wallace followed with a putback of Prince's miss to make it 82-79, and Detroit went 6-for-6 from the foul line -- pressure, what pressure? -- the rest of the way.

"A lot of laughter and shouting," Antonio McDyess said of the scene in the Pistons' locker room in the moments after they walked triumphantly off the court. "I just sat back and sucked it all in."

Wade scored 12 points in the third quarter, but he was wincing in pain in the game's final minutes. His basket with 3:10 left in the third quarter was his last of the night.

Detroit's victory extended Brown's coaching career for at least four more games, pitting him against his good friend, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, and another dominant big man, Tim Duncan, in the finals. The Pistons and Spurs split their season series 1-1.

"I'm thrilled. It's like a dream come true. Coming from where I come from, Coatesville, Pennsylvania, and now to get the opportunity to play for my second championship at 27, it's a great feeling," said Hamilton, who has scored 20 or more points in 16 of the Pistons' 17 postseason games.

Brown was elated as the final seconds ticked down, racing up the sideline to embrace Wallace near midcourt and then sprinting back to his bench to whoop it up a little more.

The sentimental pangs that Brown was experiencing before Game 6 were diminished this time.

"Not so much as the last game," Brown said. "I was home, my family was around. Now, I'm just excited about the opportunity, because these don't come around very much."

Brown has been with the Pistons for only two seasons, one of the shortest stints of his nomadic coaching career -- but easily the most successful.

"It's turned out way beyond my wildest dreams," Brown said.

Brown will visit the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., soon after Detroit's season ends to address a medical problem that developed after complications from hip surgery. If surgeons are not able to correct it, Brown plans to retire from coaching. Speculation has been rampant that if he leaves Detroit, Brown may join the Cleveland Cavaliers' front office.

Detroit got 18 points from Chauncey Billups and 13 from Prince, proving again that a team effort can be more than enough to defeat two superstars. That's what the Pistons did against O'Neal and Kobe Bryant in the NBA Finals last year, and that's what they did against O'Neal and Wade, too.

"There's so much work ahead of us," Detroit center Elden Campbell said. "It's a relief to get past them. It was a tough series."

Wade was noticeably slow during the game's first few minutes, laboring as he ran at half-speed and missing his first three shots. There was a brief burst midway through the first quarter when Wade started to look more like himself, sprinting downcourt and feeding an alley-oop pass to O'Neal, then hitting a 3-pointer for a 17-9 lead.

Miami led 23-21 after one quarter behind 10 points from O'Neal on 5-for-6 shooting, but the Pistons went ahead early in the second quarter and stayed in front for the rest of the half.

Hamilton was the Pistons' main offensive weapon, shooting 8-for-10 for 16 points, but the Heat pulled to 45-40 at halftime after Eddie Jones hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from midcourt.

Wade was noticeably looser early in the third quarter, knocking down his first two shots and looking to penetrate the lane. But as good as his offense was, Detroit's was just as efficient.

"Anybody in my situation would do the same thing, try to gut it out," said Wade, who took a painkilling injection before the game. "It came down to the end, them making plays. And we didn't."

Notes: Damon Jones sprained his left ankle in the first quarter but returned before halftime. He scored only one point. ... This was the 91st Game 7 in NBA history. The home team has a 74-17 record. ... The Pistons are 4-4 in Game 7s, while Miami is 2-2.

Game 2: Spurs 97, Pistons 76
Tony Parker, G
28 min., 12 points (6-9 FG, 0-1 3PT, 0-1 FT), 2 assists, 0 turnovers
Terrific first half (10 points, two assists) to help Spurs get off to big lead, but faded down the stretch due to foul trouble.
B

Manu Ginobili, G
32 min., 27 points (6-8 FG, 4-5 3PT, 11-13 FT), 7 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals
For the second straight game, he dominated at both ends. He didn't miss a shot until the fourth quarter.
A

Tim Duncan, F
37 min., 18 points (5-10 FG, 8-9 FT), 11 rebounds, 4 blocks
Typical no-nonsense, efficient performance. Like a true leader, he doesn't mind if Ginobili steals the spotlight.
A-

Bruce Bowen, F
36 min., 15 points (5-13 FG, 4-8 3PT, 1-2 FT), 3 rebounds, 1 assist
Who says he can't score? He knocked down some big 3-pointers to go with his stifling defense on Richard Hamilton.
A

Nazr Mohammed, C
25 min., 6 points (1-2 FG, 4-5 FT), 5 rebounds, 2 blocks
He was active early, and drew Tayshaun Prince's second foul midway through the first on a bucket inside.
C+

The Bench
82 min., 19 points, 13 rebounds, 12 assists, 7 steals
Robert Horry (12 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals) sparkled at both ends, and Beno Udrih was solid. Still waiting on Brent Barry to make a shot, but he did contribute five assists.
B

Gregg Popovich, Coach
Gotta love a guy who calls timeout to excoriate his team for poor defense ... while leading 70-53 in the third quarter.
A

Detroit Pistons
Rip Hamilton, G
35 min., 14 points (5-15 FG, 4-5 FT), 7 rebounds, 3 assists
Once again a non-factor. Pretty soon he might be wearing a mask just to hide from Bowen.
C-

Chauncey Bilups, G
40 min., 13 points (6-14 FG, 0-3 3PT, 1-1 FT), 5 rebounds, 3 assists
Decent fourth quarter, but too little too late. He finished with more turnovers (four) than assists.
D+

Rasheed Wallace, F
33 min., 11 points (5-12 FG, 0-2 3PT, 1-2 FT), 8 rebounds, 4 assists
Aggressive early play paid dividends, but foul trouble once again kept him from being a bigger factor.
C-

Tayshaun Prince, F
33 min., 3 points (1-7 FG, 1-1 FT), 3 rebounds, 0 assists
Another frustrating night shooting the ball. Another frustrating night chasing Ginobili.
D

Ben Wallace, C
33 min., 9 points (4-6 FG, 1-3 FT), 8 rebounds, 1 block
What happened to the Big Ben of a year ago? He just hasn't been the same this postseason.
C

The Bench
66 min., 26 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals
Antonio McDyess had 15 points and seven boards to bounce back from a dismal Game 1. But Lindsey Hunter has to start making some outside shots.
C

Larry Brown, Coach
He changed up the game plan to get his big men more involved, but it didn't matter. Foul trouble and San Antonio's D left him in a sour mood again.
