Play off in de NBA is fantastisch om te zien. Nu wordt ineens wel verdedigd en (soms letterlijk) gevochten om iedere centimeter.

Vanavond om 21.30: de Knicks tegen de Pacers.

Ga ik ook proberen. Twee teams die goed waren in de periode dat ik het vroeger heb gevolgd. Indiana met Rik Smits en Reggie Miller. En de Knicks met Patrick Ewing die het altijd moesten afleggen tegen Chicago.

Luca Doncic sloopte vannacht de Timberwolves en speelt met zijn Mavericks vanaf dinsdag de finale in een best of seven tegen de Celtics.

Beide ploegen wat betreft de uitslag makkelijk naar de finale, 4-0 en 4-1.

Dat was in de halve finale tussen Indiana en Boston volgens mij wel een issue. Boston was makkelijk in die ronde gekomen terwijl Indiana 7 duels nodig had tegen New York. In het eerste duel zaten ze nog dicht bij elkaar maar daarna was het eigenlijk wel klaar. Al is dat grotendeels scorebord journalistiek want ik heb daarvan weinig gezien.

Ga proberen om een paar finale wedstrijden te zien.

Wel jammer dat alle wedstrijden om 2.00 of 2.30 uur onze tijd beginnen. Doet het slecht met het werkritme. Vannacht is de eerste wedstrijd in Boston. Die zijn op zich wel de favoriet, het beste team van de reguliere competitie; hebben met Brown en Tatum stevig scorende sterren. Dallas begon pas op het laatst in de competitie te draaien, hebben met Doncic en Irving een van de sterkste duo’s ooit in de NBA, maar Boston heeft een kwalitatief bredere, betere selectie.

Ik ben van plan om de wedstrijden op te nemen. Belangrijk bijkomend voordeel is dat je dan die eindeloze onderbrekingen kunt doorspoelen. Nadeel is dat je soms toch wat minder goed in de wedstrijd zit.

ESPN maakt vaak de later op dag samenvattingen van een uur waarin je de hele wedstrijd ziet, maar zonder de time-outs. Het is maar een tip!

Boston is het beste team in de reguliere competitie geweest; toch zegt dit nog niet veel. Kyrie Irving scoorde ongewoon weinig voor zijn doen en er waren historisch weinig assists aan de kant van Dallas. Dat zijn wel vechters dus is het te vroeg om nu al aan een “sweep” te denken.

Helaas geen spannende wedstrijd. Zou leuk zijn als dat later in de serie nog wel gebeurd. Porzingis was goed bij Boston zeg. Hele complete speler.

De Celtics zijn door de nieuwe triomf wat betreft NBA-titels nu alleen recordhouder. Ze deelden het record tot voor kort met de Lakers, die in 2020 voor het laatst kampioen werden.

In de eerste plaats Lakers fan maar 'geen Celtics fan' komt inderdaad vlak daarna.
Meer in het algemeen ook een voorkeur voor teams uit het westen met Knicks en Dodgers als uitzonderingen.

Kyrie Irving viel best wel tegen in deze finale serie; had verwacht dat hij met zijn ervaring van meer betekenis zou zijn, het kwam nu wel heel erg aan op Doncic, terwijl aan de andere kant de tandem Brown-Tatum lekker draaide.

Leuk, na 15 jaar eindelijk weer een Nederlander in de NBA gedraft, nog een Amsterdammer ook: Quinten Post, door de Golden State Warriors. Hij werd als een van de laatsten gekozen, dus of ie veel speeltijd krijgt is de vraag en hij zal ook nog wel door geretrade worden. Vier andere Nederlanders stonden ook op de draftlist maar zijn niet gekozen. Een van hen, ook een Amsterdammer (Jesse Edwards) heeft schijnbaar nog wel een contract bij de Timberwolves getekend en zal wel in de G-league (de opleidingscompetitie) gaan spelen.

De Franse jongens waren de nummers 1 en 2 van de draft, de NBA wordt best wel internationaal met bijzonder veel Fransen.

Goed voor de familie James want Bronny (hartaanval vorig jaar) is niet bepaald een witje en het was volgens ingewijden zeer de vraag of hij straks door een team gedraft zou worden na z'n senior jaar. Afwachten of hij aansluit bij LA of wellicht bij South Bay. In de basis leuk natuurlijk, vader en zoon. Echter, stel dat hij in LA terecht komt terwijl hij het niveau niet heeft dan zegt dat veel over de machtsverhoudingen binnen de club en kan het leiden tot veel onrust. Indien het opnieuw een dismal jaar wordt dan komt de zwarte piet geheid bij LB.

Ik ken hem verder niet overigens. Maar als ik de verhalen lees is hij op basis van zijn statistieken niet NBA waardig toch?

Afwachten. Hij komt van USC en dus niet van een van de echt grote basketbal programmas. Hij is een speler in ontwikkeling. Kan over een paar jaar best eens een gewaardeerde rol speler zijn bij een NBA team.

En LB 'retires as a Laker'. Is ook wat waard. Al zal hij normaal gesproken niet als Laker de HOF in gaan. Speaking of... zou LB na z'n retirement aan de slag willen gaan als coach van de Lakers? Dan komt z'n andere (meer getalenteerde?) zoon straks wellicht ook.

Ook wel geinig om beelden van de jonge (17) LB nog eens terug te zien. Vergelijk dat maar eens met de 17-jarige Jorrel Hato van Ajax.

Lijkt mij dat geen ander NBA-team zich daaraan brandt.

NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown had courtside seats to watch his Boston Celtics beat the Lakers in a Summer League game Monday night.

That means he had a front-row view of one of the NBA’s most talked-about rookies, Bronny James, the son and now teammate of Lakers superstar LeBron James. The 55th overall pick of this year’s draft started the game, played 25 minutes and finished with two points on one-for-five shooting, three rebounds, one assist and two turnovers. He was zero for three from three-point range, including two airballs.

At one point during the game, TV cameras caught Brown as he turned to his girlfriend Kysre Gondrezick, a former WNBA player, and gave an assessment of the younger James’ play. While there is no audio available of the conversation, Brown appears to say, “I don’t think Bronny is a pro.”

Gondrezick appears to respond, in part, “I think he’ll be on the G League team, for sure.”

Early Tuesday morning, Brown retweeted a video showing the conversation between him and Gondrezick and did not deny what was widely reported the couple said. Instead, he offered more thoughts on the 19-year-old former USC player joining his 39-year-old father as a member of the Lakers.

“It’s a flex to have your son alongside you in the nba,” Brown wrote. “It reflects greatness and longevity! Bronny has all the tools around him to be successful I look forward to watching his growth.”

LeBron James is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and is entering his 22nd season. In the past, he publicly mentioned his desire to one day play on the same team as his oldest son but had backed off those statements more recently.

Bronny James’ struggles overshadow Dalton Knecht’s 19 points in Lakers’ loss

Bronny James suffered sudden cardiac arrest during a Trojans workout last summer but was able to start playing with the team Dec. 10. In 25 games as a USC freshman, he averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists.

He declared for the draft this spring and worked out for only two teams, the Lakers and Phoenix Suns, before being drafted in the second round by his dad’s team. On July 3, Bronny James signed a guaranteed contract with the team, agreeing to a four-year deal that could be worth nearly $8 million. The same day, LeBron James re-signed with the Lakers on a two-year deal that included a no-trade clause and a player option for the second season.

Bronny James has had a rough summer for the Lakers. In four games, he has scored a total of 17 points on seven-of-31 shooting and has missed all 15 of his three-point shots.(LA Times)

LeBron James realized his dream of playing with his son Bronny in the NBA. I feel bad for the kid.

If your dad is Tom Hanks, you get to act in movies. If your dad was Robert F. Kennedy, you get to run for president. But sports is not like that. Sports is the last true meritocracy.
Nobody puts you in the Yankees’ lineup just because your last name is Mantle. You don’t get to quarterback in the NFL because you grew up an Elway. They aren’t called the Denver Broncos and Sons.

But all that somehow doesn’t seem to apply to the LeBron James family. The superstar power forward for the Los Angeles Lakers has been dreaming for a long time about a day when he could play on the same court as his son Bronny. The problem is Bronny isn’t good enough to play in the NBA. He was barely good enough to play at USC, where he toiled one season and averaged 4.8 points a game as a backup guard.
But the Lakers management would do a swan dive into an empty pool for LeBron — especially knowing his contract was up — so they drafted Bronny with the 55th pick, gave him an $8 million four-year deal and tried him out in the preseason.

He was just awful. He averaged 4.2 points per game, shot less than 25 percent and heaved up a dozen three-point attempts, making only one. You do that in preseason, you immediately get cut or shipped down to the G League, where you can hone your bricklaying skills in solitude.

Instead, the Lakers slapped him on the roster for the season opener against Minnesota. In the second quarter, father (nearly 40) and son (20) rose from the bench in unison and entered the game, the first father and son to play together in NBA history. Bronny took one shot, missed, got one rebound, no steals, no assists and left after three minutes.
Everybody glowed about “history being made.” TNT’s Kenny Smith gushed that it was an “unbelievable accomplishment by the James family.” It “gave me little chills,” said teammate Anthony Davis. Said LeBron: “I will never forget that moment.”

Oh, pleeeease. This wasn’t history. It was hokum. It was as phony as Cheez Whiz. It was choreographed cringe theater. Bronny is not gifted at this game like his father. The moment was gifted to him by his father. That’s it.
An NBA game isn’t Bring Your Child to Work Day. Just because a dad has a crazy dream doesn’t mean it must come true. Usain Bolt has three kids. Do they get to run in the Olympics now?
The Lakers even stuck Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. in the crowd, the first father/son duo to do it in major league baseball. The difference is that the Griffeys were both All-Stars. The only way Bronny is getting into an All-Star Game is with StubHub.
It gets worse. Bronny is going on the Lakers’ five-game road trip starting this week, which will hit Cleveland on Wednesday, 45 minutes from Akron, where both father and son were born. So get out the tissues, Cleveland fans, for the Nepotism Tour.

I feel bad for the kid. Bronny didn’t push this, his dad did. This isn’t “special.” This is staged. Bronny isn’t within an O’Hare runway of being ready for it. He needs years of work on his game in the G League and I’m not even sure that will be enough.
He’s barely 6-1, doesn’t have much in the way of a guard’s ballhandling skills and would have trouble creating a shot in an empty gym. He got blocked by Kevin Durant the other night in a moment that was just … embarrassing.
Maybe LeBron can ask the rest of the NBA to stop guarding him so closely?
Can you imagine the pressure on the kid? He’s only 20. Jerry Seinfeld has a 21-year-old son, Julian. Maybe in the middle of Seinfeld’s next stand-up at Carnegie Hall, he should spot him in the audience and go, “Hey, Julian. C’mon up and do five minutes!”

And what about other young Lakers sitting on the bench, dying for their chance to get into the game? They have to sit and watch a kid who shouldn’t even be in the league — a kid they eat for a between-meal snack every day in practice — getting in while they rot.
I’m generally a monster LeBron fan. No NBA athlete has played so fabulously for so long with so few pianos falling on his head — no tabloid stuff about mistresses or 3 a.m. nightclub messes. He built a school. He’s a good, unselfish man.
But this is selfish, self-indulgent schlock. You want to be a good father? Don’t hand your son everything. This is why kids who get a Jag for their 16th birthday never wax it. Let him work hard and try to earn it himself. That way, if and when it happens, he can feel proud, not sheepish.
Look, LeBron, if you want to feel the joy of playing basketball with your son, put a hoop up in the driveway like everybody else. (Washington Post)
