JUPITER, Fla. — Major League Baseball has canceled opening day, with Commissioner Rob Manfred announcing Tuesday the sport will lose regular-season games over a labor dispute for the first time in 27 years after acrimonious lockout talks collapsed in the hours before management’s deadline.
After the sides made progress during 13 negotiating sessions over 16 1/2 hours Monday, the league send the players’ association a “best and final offer” Tuesday on the ninth straight day of negotiations.
Players rejected that offer, setting the stage for MLB to follow through on its threat to cancel opening day on March 31.
At 5 p.m., Manfred issued a statement that many fans had been dreading: Nothing to look forward to on opening day, normally a spring standard of renewal for fans throughout the nation and some in Canada, too.
The ninth work stoppage in baseball history will be the fourth that causes regular season games to be canceled, leaving Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium as quiet in next month as Joker Marchant Stadium and Camelback Park have been during the third straight disrupted spring training. (LA Times)

MLB's best-and-final offer:
- No changes to CBT thresholds (220/220/220/224/230)
- A $5M increase on pre-arb bonus pool from $25M to $30M
- An increase of minimums from $675K to $700K, moving up $10K/year
The MLBPA's previous offer:
- CBT thresholds at 238/244/250/256/263
- Pre-arb bonus pool at $85M with $5M annual increases
- Minimums at $725K going up $20K a year

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association reached an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement on Thursday, paving the way for the 2022 regular season to begin on April 7.
The CBA must still be ratified by both sides before it becomes official. Once that happens, Spring Training camps are expected to open on Sunday, bringing the three-month lockout to a close.
The deal came to fruition a day after MLB postponed Opening Day until April 14 in the absence of a new agreement and announced that each team’s first four series were removed from the schedule. However, as part of this agreement, a full 162-game schedule will be played, and the four series that were previously removed from the calendar will be rescheduled. The makeup games that came as a result of the delay will be rescheduled as nine-inning doubleheaders.
The new five-year CBA is expected to include increased minimum salaries, a new pre-arbitration bonus pool to reward the top young players in the game, a raise in competitive balance tax thresholds, the introduction of a universal designated hitter, the widest-ranging Draft lottery in pro sports, a system to prevent alleged service-time manipulation, limits on the number of times a player can be optioned in a season and a 12-team postseason. There will also be the evaluation of an international Draft.
Once the CBA is finalized, teams around the league will turn their attention to completing their offseason business, as more than 200 players remain on the free-agent market, including notable names such as Carlos Correa, Freddie Freeman, Kris Bryant and Trevor Story. (mlb.com)
Eindelijk ruimte voor Jo AdellAngels DFA Upton, tab young stars for corner OF spots
Halos part ways with veteran outfielder but believe Adell and Marsh are ‘ready to go'
MESA, Ariz. -- The Los Angeles Angels’ decision to designate veteran Justin Upton for assignment Saturday was not so much a commentary on Upton, as it was a belief in the talent and readiness of young outfielders Jo Adell and Brandon Marsh.
Angels general manager Perry Minasian, who talked to reporters before Los Angeles’ 5-4 loss to the Cubs, said Adell, 22, and Marsh, 24, have played their way onto the regular-season roster with their performance in Cactus League games.
Adell zit in een van mijn teams. :-)Dubbel schreef: ↑zo apr 03, 2022 1:50 pmEindelijk ruimte voor Jo AdellAngels DFA Upton, tab young stars for corner OF spots

Don't mention the war.
Oef! Lees net dat Upton 28 miljoen mee krijgt.... dat is toch weer een hoop geld.ANAHEIM -- Angels general manager Perry Minasian is well aware the franchise hasn’t made the postseason since 2014 but said he’s not one to dwell on the past and believes this team is built to contend in 2022.
Minasian bolstered the Angels pitching by signing starting pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Michael Lorenzen to one-year deals and signing relievers Raisel Iglesias, Aaron Loup, Ryan Tepera and Archie Bradley for a combined $92.75 million. The Angels are also counting on healthy seasons from stars such as Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon to lead the offense.
“I don’t concern myself with the past, I look at today,” Minasian said. “We’re a really talented team in a tough division. Houston has been the class of the American League the last five or six years, Seattle has gotten better, Texas has gotten better and Oakland still has some quality players and really good arms. It’s not going to be easy. But with that being said, we have a lot of talent on this roster.”
Zeux schreef: ↑do apr 07, 2022 8:23 pmIs het vooruitgang?
