Stats: Reds can set new club record at Burnley

Liverpool can set a new club record for most points obtained after the opening 15 matches of a league season should they prevail against Burnley at Turf Moor tonight.

Victory for the Reds will take them to 39 points, which is one more than they had at the same stage of the 1904-05, 1978-79 and 1990-91 campaigns.

In the eight Premier League clashes between the teams, Liverpool have won six with a draw and a loss, scoring 16 times and conceding five. The Reds have lost only two of their last 11 league visits to Turf Moor. Prior to a 2-0 loss in 2016, they went down 2-1 on Boxing Day 1973 when a Peter Cormack goal wasn't enough to cancel out strikes from Ray Hankin and Paul Fletcher.

Overall, Liverpool have lost three of the last 22 league clashes home and away against Burnley, scoring in eight of the last nine top-flight matches played.

The Reds have not lost any of their 22 away matches in all competitions in which Roberto Firmino has netted (19 wins, three draws).

They have kept 11 clean sheets in the last 17 league games and conceded one goal in each of the other six.

Luka Modric deservedly walked away with the Ballon d'Or in Paris this week.
Having won the Champions League with Real Madrid and inspired Croatia to the World Cup final, the gifted midfielder was a worthy winner.
Liverpool record-breaker Mohamed Salah had to settle for being the highest placed Premier League player in sixth.
The performances of Liverpool team-mates Roberto Firmino (19), Sadio Mane (22) and Alisson Becker(25) in 2018 were also rightly recognised.
Yet there was one glaring omission from the 30-man shortlist: Virgil van Dijk.

Defenders always get a rough deal when these kind of votes are held. It's players at the other end of the pitch who tend to grab the headlines and the glory.

Diego Godin, Marcelo, Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane were the only ones to make the cut but Van Dijk's name should have been alongside theirs. What the big Dutch centre-back has achieved over the course of 2018 has been nothing short of incredible.He arrived at Anfield in January with huge pressure on his shoulders after Jurgen Klopp made him the most expensive defender on the planet.
But that £75million price tag rarely even gets a passing mention these days because it has proved to be such a shrewd investment.Living up to the hype seemed impossible at the time but Van Dijk has managed it. He has been everything Liverpool thought they were getting and more.

Few players in world football have had the kind of impact Van Dijk has had on the Reds over the course of this year.
He has contributed more than anyone to the transformation in Liverpool's fortunes defensively under Klopp. What was once a glaring weakness is now arguably their biggest strength.

Dominant in the air and classy with the ball at his feet, Van Dijk has brought leadership, composure, organisation and a physical presence to the Reds' backline. He's an absolute colossus. His level of consistency has been mightily impressive. The 27-year-old centre-back has played 29 Premier League games for Liverpool and in that period they have kept 17 clean sheets – no top-flight side has managed more.

There were eight shutouts in 14 league games towards the end of last term and there have been another nine in the opening 15 matches this season.
Remarkably, Liverpool have not conceded more than once in a Premier League game since the 2-2 draw at West Brom in April when Van Dijk had Ragnar Klavan for company.

At Burnley in midweek he won 12 out of 13 aerial duels and completed more passes (102) than any other Reds player with 88% accuracy. Van Dijk also made 10 clearances and provided an assist when he put one on a plate for Roberto Firmino. That's two in two after his mishit volley in the derby led to Divock Origi bagging the winner courtesy of Jordan Pickford's blunder.

His importance to Liverpool is now greater than ever with Joe Gomez facing six weeks out with a fractured leg. They were undoubtedly Klopp's best centre-back combination.Until mid-January Van Dijk will have either Joel Matip or Dejan Lovren for company as the Reds look to keep their challenge for glory on track.

Keeping him fit is absolutely crucial. Liverpool would miss him more than anyone else in Klopp's squad.
The former Southampton defender doesn't have any medals to show for 2018 and maybe that counted against him in the Ballon d'Or voting. There's also the fact that Holland didn't qualify for the World Cup.

But he played a leading role in Liverpool's thrilling run to the Champions League final and he's been magnificent in the best start to a league season in the club's history. Van Dijk should have been among that list of stellar names. He belongs in that kind of company.
