Graag.A longtime Mets enemy is amazed at how Matt Harvey looks

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Bobby Cox is in the Hall of Fame because he managed three Hall of Fame pitchers in Atlanta aces Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz.
He knows pitching. Take his words seriously.
No one came away more impressed after seeing Matt Harvey’s spring debut Wednesday than Cox.
“He looked like the old Harvey for me. He looked like a No. 1,’’ Cox told The Post on Thursday at Champion Stadium of Harvey’s two innings of work. “The velocity was really good. He’s in great shape. He looked super.”
The Harvey Hype has been tamped down by the Mets this spring, but Cox doesn’t work for the Mets. He viewed Harvey through an opposing manager’s eyes. He works for the team that beat the Mets like a drum, winning 14 straight division crowns.
That was then, though. The Braves are going through some growing pains right now, so it was refreshing for Cox to see such an outing.
“The Mets have five No. 1s,” Cox said.
They just have to prove it.
What stood out the most about Harvey in his spring debut?
“The velocity and where he put the ball on the black,’’ said Cox, a special adviser to GM Alex Anthopoulos. “Everything was good. It was a great start for me to see that, very, very impressive.
“I watched him warm up in the bullpen as well, I was super impressed,’’ Cox said. “His mound presence was great [Wednesday]. We’ve got some guys who we are working with on our own team on mound presence. When the other team sees a weakness in mound presence, they jump all over a pitcher. They are just waiting for a pitcher to implode. Mound presence is huge.’’
Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz exuded mound presence.
Cox, 76, keeps a close eye on the NL East, and he is well aware of Noah Syndergaard’s impressive 100-mph start his first time out. Cox admitted that throwing 101 out of the chute could make you a “little nervous” but added Syndergaard is such an impressive physical presence.
Then there is Jacob deGrom, who grew up a Braves fan, as did Zack Wheeler.
“The Mets have a great chance,’’ Cox said. “The Nationals are tough, no doubt, but those guys with the Mets are nasty. You’ve got five No. 1s, how many teams have that?
“Believe me,’’ he said, “pitching takes you a long ways. If they’re healthy, I would not count them out. I’m very impartial, I’m telling you what I saw, and in Harvey I saw No. 1 stuff. Harvey has always been a No. 1 to me until he ran into those [physical] problems.’’
Cox smiled and said, “Harvey is a free agent after the year, right?”
If it all goes well for Harvey, perhaps the Braves will put him on their shopping list, this is a team that will have lots of money next year to spend in the free-agent market.
Former Braves center fielder Andruw Jones is here as a special instructor as well and was extremely impressed with Harvey, telling The Post: “He looks in shape, his velocity was there. I was told that he was throwing harder than the scoreboard posted (96).’’
That point was backed up by several scouts who were at Wednesday’s game, saying the gun is a bit slow at Champion Stadium.
“The ball was moving, he looked good and in shape, he looked very lean,’’ Jones said. “If they stay healthy, that is always the key for them. The last few years on paper they might have the best pitching staff out there, but the thing is to stay healthy.’’
Cox, who won 2,504 games as a manager, fourth most all time, knows the game is all about pitching. Remember, he noted in his 2014 Hall of Fame speech: “I wouldn’t be standing here if it weren’t for Maddux. Glavine and Smoltz.’’
These are just the first outings for Mets starters. But make no mistake, opposing teams are already taking notice. The Mets are going to have to live with and up to the pitching hype.

Only here are eight major league scouts, seven of whom have seen Ohtani this spring, and the reports they shared with Yahoo Sports sound almost identical. They acknowledge his raw power and uncommon speed. They also believe major league pitchers are going to punish him with inside fastballs, that his swing contains flaws in balance and mechanics, and that he needs at least 500 plate appearances of seasoning in the minor leagues to give him a chance at becoming a productive major league hitter.

Thor moet wel verbeteren. Vier runs in zes innings is teveel.
Dus FB, splitter, slider, curveball. Who cares?
