After a less than convincing victory over Excelsior, Ajax face the return tie against Celta in the Europa League. Ajax are atop the table with 7 points from three games. A win will guarantee advancement to the knockout round and almost secure first place. Winning the group will be important as they would not have to face any of the 3rd place CL teams that drop down.

Ajax better extend Dolberg's contract tomorrow. He is really turning into something special. Haven't had a striker like this since Huntelaar.

Dolberg had a great half. Both central defenders pressed forward which was also good to see. Sinkgraven has been quite fine as has Ziyech. Younes destroyed at least three attacking opportunities because of bad play. Veltman cannot defend the left winger from Celta as he is not fast enough. Klaassen is making me crazy. Onana was really lucky not to have conceded on the lazy pass he made towards Veltman.

Dolberg 's contract already to 2021 so no problem.He looks a fine prospect and took his goal superbly.Onana was indeed lucky and agree Veltman is too slow for their winger.

Just saw the replay of the goal, Dolberg's first touch is so simple and 2nd touch is the shot into goal.

Well we saw 2 superb goals by Ziyech and Younes and were playing well when Ziyech goes off and Gudelj comes on. With Klaassen also a waste of space and Veltman again showing all the fans he is not a full back we hung on . Gudetti scored a fine goal but he should have been red carded. What an apology of a pro footballer. (well he played for Fword!)

Still work for us to do , we still need 2 decent full backs and Klaassen is not worth his place .Gudelj is not even good enough to play for Jong Ajax ( well Nouri v d Beek and de Jong are all better)

the Ajax back line totally lost it in the last 15 minutes and it took a very good save by Onana to keep Ajax up by one. This lapse in concentration cannot be tolerated in matches at this level. Club was very lucky to come away with the win given Celta should have scored in the first half on the poor pass by Onana. No question that Dolberg was MOTM followed closely by Ziyech. Ajax are now top of the table with 10 points and Standard Liege and Celta each have 5.

Player Ratings:

Onana (6) - busy second half made up for the terrible soft pass that Celta should have converted
Sinkgraven (7) - fine match today; caught up field once but did some good defending
Riedewald (6.5) - should have dealt with the ball much better and his soft chest gave the ball away for the 2nd Celta goal
Sanchez (5.5) - outstanding match but two terrible errors have to be noted
Veltman (4) - in trouble all match long because he is too slow to be a LB
Schöne (7) - well done
Ziyech (8) - excellent match; all over the pitch and dangerous with the ball at all times
el Capitan Bad Touch (5) - another game marked by lots of running and mediocre play; when will Bosz wake up?
Younes (6) - great goal but his play in the first half was terrible and he was lucky to be on the pitch in the 2nd
Dolberg (9) - unbelievably good in all aspects of the game
Traore (7) - great pass to Ziyech but otherwise pedestrian match
Gudelj (NR) - did he even get a touch
Cassiera (NR) - same as with Gudelj

Back to the league with an away match in Alkmaar who have been struggling this season.

We should be selling Klaassen and Veltman in the winter and at least keep Tete. I think we have enough cover in MF (Nouri, Van De Beek) to let Bazoer go. Actually maybe we keep Bazoer if we let go of Klaassen.

If we end up topping the table in the next game against Pana, I would really like the kids getting a run out away at Standard Liege.

Two Games in a row in which Sanchez commits errors, he has to wake up. On the other end Dolberg is becoming quite the replacement for Milik, seems like that Bergkamp coaching really does wonders.

And yes I do remember Cruz, he played at right back in the early 2000s, but had no chance in competing against Trabelsi (What a rightback, the type that we need right now). I still believe that Klaassen and Veltman will find their form sooner or later. No need to panic now, as Ajax are virtually through and top of the group, no matter what the mathematician says. Also Ajax are set to cement 2nd place for a qualifying round for the CL. However, Ajax do need to get rid of Gudelj, Bazoer, Tete, El Ghazi, Westermann (for obvious reasons) and with the upcoming Cerny and Dekker on the flanks, Amin Younes is also surplus to requirements. Obviously Ajax need to sign players in the transfer window, as I said in the other thread, they need to lure Vurnon Anita, a versatile player who can play at right back (we need one) and Moses Simon, a right winger, he played for Ajax in the youth team, so he is familiar, he is doing well in Belgium. Traore cuts inside from the right flank, because he isn't really a winger, but a centre forward.
