Two brief comments about that first goal.
1, Cavani was in an offside position when first ball was played, but not involved in play. He was onside when he received the 2nd pass. Valid goal.
2. Former players (especially with a mike in their hands) always assume they know the laws and how they should be applied. They are often wrong.

This is getting a bit academic so feel free to ignore me. I am more or less in favour of the intent of the rule as it is now because it theoretically takes away some of the advantage of playing the offside trap, i.e. you can't just step up to play the CF offside because that exposes you to a run from a speedy winger in an onside position who collects the ball and "laterals" it back to the now-onside CF.
I guess it makes defending a little bit harder but I don't really have a problem with that. I wonder if it has forced teams to play a deeper line though?
