This was a significant decade for me. It started with my brother's untimely passing (Menno knew Ed and understands the significance for me), then a year later was the terrorist attack of Sept 11. George Bush and Dick Cheney led us down a long and stinking path of war and financial ruin. I changed jobs about a dozen times. The time came to put Ajax USA to pasture. And the decade ended with my mother's passing. Here I am, just hours away from the end of this decade, and I am pretty happy to see it in the rear-view mirror. However, I love my wife and children with a passion that can't be expressed in words, and I'm grateful for friends who love me despite knowing me. And in all of this, I cherish my friendship with all of you, and with Ajax in general. My unlikely and hard-to-explain allegiance to AFC Ajax Amsterdam and all of you has given me more pleasure and solace than you can imagine. So at the very death of the decade, I raise a glass (a bottle, actually) to you all, and I say thank you for being my friends. Hup Ajax!

A very moving, yet meaningful summing up of the last ten years. I agree that, although we have to remember what's happened in the last decade, we must move on, hopefully to something better. As far as life in general is concerned, the world seems to be gradually crawling out of the worst recession in living memory. Coupled with the seemingly pointless and unwinable task in the Afghan mountains, I'm still a little tentative about the next ten years...let's just hope that some joy comes to us via the lads at the Arena....it might take that long!!!

Ever heard of the Nieuwjaarsduik ('New Year's Dive' or 'New Year's Plunge')?

Dutch tradition. Thousands of Dutch youngsters go to the beach on New Year's Day (the largest numbers gather on Scheveningen beach in The Hague) and storm into the North Sea for a quick New Year's Dive in the freezing cold.

Newspaper De Telegraaf always put a picture on the front page of a random 'New Year's Diver'. Could as well have been you or me, of course, or a 59 year-old factory worker from Tilburg named Bernie. Happy New Year from Holland.

The orange hats are provided by Unox, Holland's greatest hot dog/sausage brand...

Have to agree with every word there. Hope everyone has a good relaxing Christmasand a Happy New Year. Ko, your first as a dad, so however peaceful this year is the next and the one after that will be progressively less so (but a whole lot more enjoyable too).
