Bergkamp seeks contract extension

Arsenal's Dennis Bergkamp wants to stay at the club until 2006 and then retire.
The Dutchman, who scored the winner against Newcastle on Sunday, is out of contract at the end of the year and was thought to be ready to end his career.

But the 35-year-old said: "It would be nice to have another year, to experience the last year at Highbury.

"My decision would be to have another year, but I don't know what will happen. Everything will be sorted out at the end of the season."

He added: "Sometimes it is difficult to know what the boss and the club are thinking.

"I am in my 10th year at the club and as for a testimonial, we are thinking about it.

"But I am still focusing on my playing career and we will have to see what happens.

"A testimonial, as I see it, is the last game of your career."

Thierry Henry would like to see Bergkamp at Highbury for the club's final season before moving to the new Emirates stadium.

The Frenchman said: "He fancies playing another year I also fancy him playing for another year.

"I have played with a lot of great players and he is amazing. He always has a great desire when he is on the pitch and you can never complain about him.

"At his age, to be doing what he is doing, it is unbelievable. I don't know if I will still be playing at his age. He is a great guy."

Nieuwenburg na bijna drie jaar terug op veld

Bijna drie jaar was John Nieuwenburg veroordeeld tot revalideren. Met een optreden in het bekerduel met FC Den Bosch zet hij een punt achter zijn blessureleed.

Nieuwenburg (26) speelde op 4 april 2002 zijn laatste officiële wedstrijd. Na 23 minuten was het gedaan met de oud-Spartaan, die opnieuw werd geveld door een knieblessure. Door blessures aan beide knieën had hij al sinds de zomer van 2000 de nodige wedstrijden moeten missen.

Na twee zware operaties en de daaropvolgende revalidaties is de middenvelder nu klaar voor een terugkeer op de velden. Dat doet hij in het shirt van FC Dordrecht. De club uit de Gouden Gids Divisie zag heil in de Hagenaar, die eind november een contract voor anderhalf jaar tekende aan de Krommedijk.

Gewend aan de individuele revalidatietraining in Zeist was het voor Nieuwenburg aanpassen toen hij zich meldde voor de groepstraining. 'Ik moest bijvoorbeeld wennen aan het feit dat ik weer duels moest aangaan. Gelukkig heb ik me snel aangepast en voetbal ik lekker mee', zei Nieuwenburg begin januari in VI. 'Wat dat betreft verheug ik me op het Amstel Cup-treffen met FC Den Bosch.'

FC Dordrecht strijdt vanavond met FC Den Bosch voor een plaats in de kwartfinale van de Amstel Cup.

Stanley Menzo misschien naar AGOVV

Stanley Menzo vertrekt wellicht bij AFC. De oud-doelman praat woensdag met AGOVV over een meerjarige verbintenis.
Menzo was eerder trainer bij AGOVV, toen dit nog een amateurclub was. Menzo is vereerd door de belangstelling, maar er moet nog wel over het een en ander worden gesproken met AGOVV.
AFC wacht de besprekingen voorlopig af. "Stanley heeft vrijdag in een evaluatie aangegeven dat hij naar AGOVV kan, " zegt bestuurslid Cees Gehring tegen Het Parool. "Wij moeten dus even wachten. Onze intentie is wel om met Menzo door te gaan, als hij niet het betaald voetbal in gaat. Hij past goed bij AFC. "

'VfB Stuttgart wil Didulica als opvolger Hildebrand'

VfB Stuttgart heeft een oog laten vallen op keeper Joey Didulica, zo meldt Der Kicker. De oud-Ajacied speelt tegenwoordig voor Austria Wien en heeft nog een contract tot medio 2006.

Aan het einde van dit seizoen vertrekt keeper Timo Hildebrand transfervrij bij de Duitse club. Eerder werd Arsenal's Jens Lehmann al in verbang gebracht met Stuttgart.

Naast Didulica zou de Stuttgart ook interesse hebben in Thomas Hitzlsperger. De 22-jarige jeugdinternational staat momenteel bij Aston Villa onder contract, maar heeft daar nog geen basisplaats veroverd. Ook Bremen zou achter Hitzlsperger aan zitten, maar dit ontkent de speler.

Hersi keen on Ethiopia

Youssouf Hersi insists he would jump at the chance to represent Ethiopia after conceding he has little hope of breaking into the Holland side.

The 22-year-old was born in Ethiopia but grew up in the Netherlands after his parents fled the African state during the civil war almost two decades ago.

The Vitesse Arnhem striker has represented Holland at under-21 level but he admits trying to dislodge the likes of Newcastle's Patrick Kluivert and Ruud van Nistelrooy of Manchester United in the Dutch top team is a virtually impossible task.

He will now consider taking advantage of a Fifa ruling which allows players to switch allegiances if they have not represented a country a senior level.

"If the chance came for me to play for Ethiopia I would take it," he told BBC Sport.

"There are some big stars in the Holland side and it's very difficult for me to get into the team.

"Most of the players in the Ethiopia side play for teams based in the country."

Hersi arrived in Holland as a five-year-old and has not been back to his homeland since.

But he insists he will return one day either as a player for the national side or to accompany his parents on their annual holiday to Ethiopia.

"I've not had time to go back because I've been too busy with my career but, of course, I'd like to go back one day."

"My parents go back every year and they show me videos of the country. They talk about the country all the time."

Hersi joined Arnhem on a two-and-a-half year deal during the January transfer window after an unhappy spell at fellow Eredivisie side Heereveen, who he joined from Ajax last summer.

He now hopes the move will help him get his career back on track.

He said: "I was on loan at NEC Nijmegen last season and did well. Heereveen made a bid for me and I decided to join them.

"But it was a mistake because the manager never played me. The manager here plays me on the right side but he also gives me freedom to move around.

"I'm happy at Arnhem. I want to stay here until I'm 25 and then move to another league in Europe."

Babangida beëindigt loopbaan

Tijani Babangida zet een punt achter zijn voetballoopbaan. Ajax' voormalige rechtsbuiten had de afgelopen twee jaar te veel last van spierblessures.

De Nigeriaan won in 1998 met Ajax de dubbel. De laatste club waar Babangida onder contract stond was Ittihad Khémisset uit Marokko.

In 102 officiële wedstrijden scoorde hij 22 doelpunten. Het seizoen 97-98 was zijn beste. Hij scoorde maar liefst 13 doelpunten en had daarmee een belangrijk aandeel in de winst van de dubbel van Ajax.

Babangida bevindt zich op dit moment in het Afrikaanse land Benin en is inmiddels een nieuwe carrière als zakenman begonnen.
