Pompey's Kanu demands Ajax move
Monday, 1 January
All the signs were there that he wasn't a happy camper, and now striker Kanu has asked Portsmouth to allow him join Dutch side Ajax.
The 30-year-old has helped Pompey float around the top half of the Premiership this season, banging in nine goals, but he seems to have had enough of the Redknapp revolution.
"I want to go to Ajax," he informed the club via the Vanguard newspaper. "Portsmouth should be grateful for what I have been able to do for them and allow me to go.
"I am waiting for Ajax's offer. I have told Portsmouth I want to leave. My mind is made up.
"I have great memories of Amsterdam and I know great things can happen there if we return."
And in news that is unlikely to trouble Spurs boss Martin Jol too much, he added: "I have been talking to Edgar Davids and a couple of the other guys who shaped Ajax in the mid-1990s and we believe we can re-create the atmosphere if we return to play for the club."
Redknapp, meanwhile, has admitted that there is little he can do if the in-form Sol Campbell wants to join Chelsea.
The league champions are experiencing a defensive crisis of sorts at the moment with John Terry sidelined and have been linked with a move for the former Arsenal and England man.
"You wouldn't want to lose him but if he said he wanted to go what could you do? Not a lot really," the Fratton Park boss said.
"I hope Chelsea are not interested in him. If I lose him I am in trouble."

Question is: are Ajax interested...?
If not, there's not much for him to 'demand', is there?

Barbara Barend, host of the Voetbal Insite talkshow, said yesterday that the Ajax board will not offer Kanu a contract. So indeed, this is the appropriate thread for Nwankwo Kanu: Former Ajax players...

And this is what kanu himself had to say in an English newspaper today (
The News, according to Ajax Netwerk... probably
News Of The World): "I don't know why they keep on saying that about Ajax – there's nothing happening. I'm a Portsmouth player, I love the supporters, I love the club and definitely I want to be here. It's just up to the management to show their own commitment. I don't know who these people are that keep going on about Ajax, Ajax, Ajax."
"I haven't even heard from Ajax. I don't know where it's coming from. It's annoying because it's not true. The fans want to know the truth and the truth is I am grateful to Portsmouth, to Harry, to the management, to the supporters. They have taken me in and since then I have been playing for them and I want to stay."
Right then. I rest my case.

'The News' is actually the Portsmouth local paper so that does give a bit of context to what Kanu has said - keeping his local public happy (though it's quite possibly still true.....)

Basically Kanu only has a contract with Pompey to June and wants a better deal and more money so his agent starts paper reports that Ajax want him.
This was one transfer rumour that came from the fairies!!

That would be a
really strange move...
He left Holland because he was fed up with the Dutch 'tabloid' press, who were chasing him and his girlfriend wherever they went. Also, wherever Ajax played there was always this constant shower of abuse from the crowd (also about his girlfriend, mainly). And now he wants to return...?
Moreover, VDV has done really well in Germany. He was pretty much the new superstar of the Bundesliga last season, so it should be possible for him to find a club in a major football league. I would expect him to move to Spain, which is where he wants to end up anyway.
The only problem: he's injury-prone. Always has been and always will be.
Voetbal International did the maths the other day and it appears that he's missing one out of every three games due to injury. That's an absence rate of 33%. This has consistently been the case throughout his career, in Amsterdam
and Hamburg.

forget about kanu, we don't need him!!! he played well at the start of the season, but he didn't scored for 5 last games, so his fairy-tale is end.
about rafael - it would be great to see him back, but there is very litle chance to see him at ajax soon. maybe after 10 years :D

you are right, Ko, and this often is a key factor to a player's career.

Indeed. In the case of VDV I fear the 'injury factor' will be the difference between top and not-quite-top.

From Saturday's issue of 'Le Parisien'...

Just to translate;
The Morrocan international N B, who's playing for Nantes, is on the verge of joining Betis according to le Parisien.
The ex Ajax player, joined this season with a four year contract.
A Betis, the attacking midfielder, 26 years old, would join the new French coach Louis Fernandez.

It is being reported that EDGAR DAVIDS is in talks to sign with
(MLS)FC DALLAS in the United States-I have mixed feelings about this matter in this case I believe if ajax could use DAVIDS to mentor or uphold the ajax tradition.. it would be a win-win situation for both player/club-
Will ajax make a move for DAVIDS or is it off to MLS?

I kind of respect him and I have more sympathy for him now than a few years ago, but having said that: I wouldn't want him back. It's not the way to go, if you ask me.

Davids on his way to Ajax according to the Parool. They say Ajax and Davids have agreed terms, it's now between Spurs and Ajax to agree a fee.
