I have the deluxe edition with numerous extra albums and cd's, including Unplugged, Drop in the Park, etc.. I love their MTV unplugged show. Also, love Brother and the State of Love and Trust outtake.

I have that one, too!
'Ten Redux' is absolutely superb. Ten is now finally as good as it can be. A masterpiece. The only reason why it wasn't a masterpiece (yet) was the sound.

I am pretty surprised to hear that Ten sounds so much different in the new version. I have been putting off buying the new release, but I guess I have to go and get it now. They're also working on a brand new studio album - can't wait for that either.

On another , very different, note, just caught Throbbing Gristle. Yes, TG . In the states for the first time in twenty - eight years. AMAZING !! "Discipline" alone was reason enough to see them. Ferocious in its reworked and live form !!!!!!!

Techno and trance before there was techno and trance.

You know, I really like Kings of Leon.
Also, lots of nice bands on that list.

I purchased my three day pass today. I'm familiar with about half the bands, maybe 60%, and am looking forward to being introduced to bands I've never heard of. Kind of a South BY Southwest vibe. I love SXSW and the ACL tv series so I'm ecstatic.

Actually, it's a very different vibe from SxSW, which is dominated by black-clad out-of-town hipsters and wannabes wearing sunglasses at all times. The ACL festival draws a much more local and diverse crowd - all three of our kids (22, 20, and 16) basically went with their entire high school classes. And as the resident Austinite on this board let me just warn you to be prepared for some absolutely incredible heat, even though they've moved it to October. Two years ago (or was it three?) I saw my hero Dave Alvin on a day when it reached 108 F, and the amount of dust kicked up by the crowds was unbelievable - we were all hacking and blowing dirt out of our noses for the next two weeks. It was absolutely brutal. And another year my son saw a buddy standing about ten feet in front of him at one of the shows and got tired of trying to get his attention by yelling at him, so he threw a penny at him - and it stuck fast to his bare sweaty back.
Still, it's an amazing lineup. Just hope your favorites don't all end up playing at the same time on different stages!

Looking forward to the conditions. Saw Pearl Jam at Gorge Amphitheatre in July, 2006, when the temp was 116 on Saturday and 112 on Sunday. I'll bring the 60 SPF sun block.

I remember seeing Joan Osborne at SXSW one year and looking over my shoulder to see one of my best friends, coincidentally standing there. Good times. And, of course, Austin rocks.

Sometimes an old tune pops up in your head, and it will stay there for days, and you keep whistling and humming and singing it - until it drives you mad.
Like John Hiatt's
Perfectly Good Guitar, one of the best songs he wrote. Fantastic tune.
Check this: Hiatt playing it
live at Letterman, back in 1993.

Agreed! I've always wondered what Pete Townshend makes of that song.
Still think the best Hiatt album is probably
Bring the Family, though, with Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, and Jim Keltner backing him up. The original of "Thing Called Love" cuts Bonnie Raitt's version (which is terrific) to shreds.

Yep. I agree.
Perfectly Good Guitar is actually the brilliant title song of a so-so album. A few great tracks, but some filler, too. One of Hiatt's best songs; definitely not one of his best albums.
But that's just me, of course.

Of course, filler from Hiatt is better than most of whatever else is out there....

Tough week for the Austin music world. First Poodie Locke, Willie Nelson's compadre and the namesake of Poodie's Hilltop Lounge, died. Then novelist Bud Shrake, who while not a musician himself was an integral part of the whole "outlaw country" scene back in the day. And finally guitarist Stephen Bruton, a true musician's musician who worked with Kris Kristofferson, Bonnie Raitt, T-Bone Burnett, Alejandro Escovedo, Peter Case, Marcia Ball, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Elvis Costello, Sonny Landreth, and many others. I last saw him a year or so ago as part of the Resentments, his group with Jon Dee Graham and Scrappy Jud Newcomb, who had a weekly gig at the Saxon Pub on South Lamar; the throat cancer had taken its toll, but he was a real pro. And of course it didn't affect his nimble picking at all.
We'll miss 'em all.

You are unbelievably lucky to live in Texas, and you are supernaturally blessed to live in Austin.
Never forget that.

Next category, ladies and gentlemen, is the 'Most Painful & Embarrassing TV Interview Of The Year'. There is only one nominee: Michael Jackson's father, Joe, live on CNN, directly from the red carpet of the BET Awards in Los Angeles...
Check it out.
Can you believe that?

It's interesting to note that as news comes out about Michael Jackson's autopsy (which apparently shows he was a shell of the man at his height of popularity.... skeletal, bald, stomach full of pills e.t.c.), "The Boss" gives a two hour and forty minute concert master class at Glastenbury. I guess it just reafirms my view of "Pop" versus "Rock" music......

I love the self promotion of some of the people getting interviewed since Michael's death. Very classy.

A Question for Dan or anyone
On the subject of older performers at glastonbury the wife was watching Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds .
They are Australian , she wants to know are they big in Australia and what do you know about them.
PS My wife is more clued up on modern music than me . Our son , aged 20, is always playing current stuff .
Me well I am in a time warp.I think I got stuck after the 80's .

Heard Blur were fantastic headlining The Glastonbury Festival. I'd have given a lot to be there. One of my absolute favorite bands from teenage years and I'm psyched that their back together.

Just as excited about the Blur reunion as you Davo. Saw most of the Glastonbury Gig live on the BBC yesterday. It was great to see them back in action. Hopefully a new album and a tour on the european continent in the near future.
