That's excellent. I just hope the nice man from Virgin Media sets it all up OK for me Saturday in my new house so I can watch it........I'm already getting withdrawl symptoms, cable TV box all packed up on Sunday and seeing as I was only here another week I didn't get them to fix it....I missed the highlights programme last night though

Well, the TV was set up OK and in time for me to at least record the AZ game while I moved furniture, but it's taken until today to get the internet sorted out (same company - long story!).

So Friday afternoon I was surfing the satelite and I came across ESPN who were showing the final of the 1972 European Cup, which you will remember was won by Ajax 2 – 0. Inter were a class team, but Ajax were unlucky not to win by five or six.

The first thing you notice is just how s-l-o-w the game was in those days. The game was played at walking pace, and players seemed to have an eternity of space and time to do whatever they wanted with the ball. The concept of closing players down and denying them space didn’t seem to have occurred to anyone back in the day. Now this may seem like a bizarre thing to say, but if today’s Ajax took on the 1972 Ajax, I would take 2007 Ajax to win. Not because they are more talented (because clearly they are not) but because they are fitter, faster, stronger and more tactically astute than 1972 Ajax.

Though Cruijff scored both the goals he was pretty anonymous through most of the game, it was Keizer and Neeskens who really caught the eye. Their ability to take defenders on and just go past them seemingly without effort was startling. It’s a skill that seems to have gone out of the modern game, with players being encouraged to lay the ball off rather than risk losing possession. Shame; wingers running straight at defenders, and then having the skill to go past them before cutting the ball back from the by-line was one of the most exciting sights in football.

Another point that seems to have been lost in the mists of time, is that Ajax’s defence were complete bastards. Inter’s strike-force of Sandro Mazzola and Roberto Boninsegna was as good as any in the day, but they rarely got past Ajax’s back four of Suurbier, Blankenurg, Hulshoff and Krol – and when they did, they would have their legs taken from under them without hesitation. A task Ajax’s defenders seemed to be able to perform at will without picking up yellow cards. Indeed it was Boninsegna whose frustration lead to him picking up the only yellow card of the game.

So all-in-all it was entertaining to watch players who had the self-confidence bordering on arrogance to back themselves to take on world-class opponents and humiliate them. You could see that the concept of defeat never once occurred to Ajax, what mattered to them was the manner of their victory, that they would win was never in doubt.

One last thing. Ajax’s goalkeeper, Heinze Stuy, was crap. Plus ca change, plus ce la meme chose.

Its been available for a while i believe, but only in pubs and clubs. Since the 1st of November its also available via Foxtel cable and Austar (where it started in October). I only found out about it 2 days ago, rang Setanta and hooked it up. I think its $14.95 AUD per month.

Too bad it's 1-day delayed in the US, but at least it's on! I can't complain about tape delays, idiotic announcers, non-HD broadcasts... because I've spent entire seasons without seeing a single Ajax game. I take what I can get.

Thanks mate. There's a list of pubs on their site that have Setanta, but I guess the chance of them showing Eredivisie in those pubs is still pretty slim. The Premier League is so popular here it's always going to win out in a pub.

The other option is satellite. I'm renting but I think there's a satellite dish on our shed for the owner's house which is next door. I wonder if there's some way to steal it...

Otherwise I guess I'm stuck with SopCast.
