I actually think that Vermalen might develop into a great man-marker with a bloke like Stam next to him.
Heitinga has played well in recent weeks, but I don't (and never will) believe in him as a man-marker.

I think Vermaelen is fine as part of the mix at center half, but would prefer a more established (READ: MATHIJSEN OR BOUMA) partner for Stam. Vermaelen has also played in midfield ,I saw him do so when at Jong Ajax, and could be used in a 4-4-2.

Accprding to today's De Telegraaf Grygera has now definitively rejected Ajax's bids. He will not renew his deal. Which means, in practice, that the club will try to sell him this summer (which won't be hard).
Chance that he'll leave in the summer: 99%

Does this mean we will be buying a new defender or will we just stick with the youngsters. How much should we get for selling Grygera ?????

5m I say. But at his age and the way Ajax is playing I could understand if he wants to leave. This means we should get @ least two defenders this summer

He's quoted as saying he will stay and see his contract out.
As Ko said last week chances of him going 99%
No more Bosmans at this club please. However good you are if you do not want to renew then pissoff.

Well, not necessarily "piss off" (it's also an option to shake hands, say 'thank you' and sell the player 'in peace'), but I do agree that he must be sold if he doesn't renew. No Bosmans. Absolutely agreed.

Piss off is a bit strong I agree but this club has lost more money out of Bosman's than any other. Van Geel is obviously making sure this wont happen in future .
I think Grygera was speaking in the event of no club coming in for him.If he has a good WC one of the top Italian or English clubs will be in for him.

June 12!

I hope he has a good world cup, so we can get as much money out of him as possible. Having said that, Czech Rep. are in a tough group with Ghana, USA and Italy, I think Italy (unfortunatly) and the USA (hopefully) will qualify from that group

According to the latest rumours Grygera will be sold to AC Milan this week. He was gonna go to Juventus, but the general expectation is that they will get relegated. AC Milan are expected to stay in the Serie A.
And now for the good news: the transfer fee Ajax will get for Grygera is reportedly 5 million euros.
That's pretty amazing. Twice as much as I expected, to be honest.

OK, we'll have quite a big money for him, but I am still unhappy with his transfer. Look - Stam could be only a central defender (he had to play a few games as a right back in Milan last year and it didn't work...), Ogararu is a typical wing back, so I'm afraid he won't be useful in the center of the defence. Grygera can play (and do it good!) on every position in the defence... I want him to stay in Ajax.

I see your point. I love Grygera, I think he's top drawer and I wish he was staying. No disagreement there. But fact is that he won't extend his deal, which will be expiring next summer. Which makes it all very simple: he must be sold, otherwise he'll walk away for free and the club can't have that (too many Bosmans last season and there you are: loss at the end of the season).
Given the fact that he must be sold, I think 5 million is excellent money for a dude with one season left on his contract. We bought him for 3.5 million. F*cking hell. Approximately 35% profit on a guy with on season left on his contract! That's not bad at all...

5 million is more than nothing, but I don't believe that Ogararu or Vermaelen could replace Grygera... I hope they will and I want to believe (hehe "The X-files" rulzzz), but at the moment I can't.
I am sure that I'll miss him just like I miss Chivu  .

Ok 5 million is good but now that he's going we are left with only Stam, Heitinga and Vermealen plus maybe Maduro. That prety thin in my opinion add some injury problems and form crisis and we might be watching lindenberg or Gabri as CB, that is obviously not a good idea so i suggest that we buy another defender, someone from the eredivisie who can come cheap and add some detph to the defense.

We have Schilder ,who has been added to the first squad , and could help us...
Heitinga ,Stam , Vermaelen ,Maduro and Schilder ,I think is enough.
But Schilder is not a solid CB yet ,and have no experience .I would love to see Mathijsen playing for Ajax

Carrying this over from the chat in the Emmen match-day thread...
Grygera and the team are now even talking about position roles for him this season... after we were all convinced he would be gone by now (granted, most of the interest in him was coming from Italian clubs, and they've had some, shall we say, "issues" this summer to deal with and aren't really buying players right now). Will he stay or will he go? Is he happy at Ajax, or does he want to get away? And considering that this is the last year on his contract, what are the chances (if any) that Ajax will offer him (and him accepting) a new contract... or are we looking at the potential situation where he plays at Ajax this season and then walks away in summer 2007 for free?

Looks like we are into another Bosman here. He has turned down a new contract and no one is interested .
Ajax may now have to accomodate him when he does not want to be here.
I would tell him that if he wants to stay for this season before doing a bosman he can play in the reserves. His agent would soon get a transfer for him!
I know I will be alone in this as he is a good player BUT he does not want to stay and the club must stop pandering to such players. Last season was a farce.
PS Fulham are taking a stance with Malbranque ie contract up in 2007 does not want to renew so Coleman the Fulham manager has told him he is playing in the reserves.

Ummm...
Perhaps you've got a point here, but the least we can do is take this into consideration:
Kowalczyk schreef:AjaxPDX schreef:I find it interesting that Grygera is still in Amsterdam and talking about position roles for the season. A month or two ago it was a 100% certainty that we all believed he was gone in the summer, yet he's still there, and it's starting to look like there's a possibility he might still be there when the season opens.
Yeah. He has only one year left on his contract, so next summer he will walk out for free. I am pretty sure that Ajax would prefer to sell him now they can still get some money for him,
but the interest in Grygera was mainly coming from Italy. From Milan and Juventus, to be precise. So I think the whole scandal over there f*cked things up for Grygera, who doesn't seem to be unhappy to be an Ajacied for another year, by the way.
I think it would be a bit unfair to accuse Gryga of any 'sneaky' behaviour. He's been pretty honest and open all along: he didn't want to extend his deal, because he felt it was time for him to move on. He always said that he wouldn't mind staying here until his contract expired, but he also admitted that he quite fancies the Serie A.
No problems there. The boy has been perfectly open.
During last season (and during the summer) Milan and Juve appeared to be interested and Grygera's agent has talked to them, but we all know what happened in Italy, so these clubs appear to have backed out. There is not much Grygera can do about that, I would say. All he can do now is wait - and give 100% for Ajax. Which is exactly what he's doing, if you ask me. Mr Robbert Schilder has told Henk ten Cate that he doesn't feel like playing left fullback. Grygera, however, told Ten Cate: left fullback is good enough for me, if you want to play me there I'll be your man.
I can respect that. The boy would have preferred a transfer this summer, but he didn't get it because the major clubs that were interested in him were involved in the Serie A scandal. Which is why he returned to Amsterdam, with an attitude as positive as can be... What more can he do?
I don't think he deserves any stick, to be honest...
