Group C of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009 features a fearsome cross section of accomplished and confident sides from all over the globe, including a pair of continental champions and the runners-up from Europe. Iran arrive in West Africa boasting much-heralded ace striker Kaveh Rezaei, who scored no less than six goals as the junior Team Melli roared to claim the Asian U-16 crown last year. Similarly, Gambia - playing close to home - are reigning champions of Africa for the second time on the trot and will be eager to make a mark on proceedings in Calabar.
The Netherlands arrive in Nigeria with a solid, if unspectacular, squad that stretched hosts Germany to finish runners-up in the UEFA qualifying competition. Underdogs Colombia round out the section's combatants, and the fourth-place finishers from South America look likely to struggle without injured star Edwin Cardona.

The location
The four hopefuls in Group C will be based in Calabar, a city of 1.2 million near the Cameroon border on Nigeria's easternmost stretch of coast. The capital of Cross River State, the major shipping port is also known as a major hub of Nigerian tourism thanks to its natural beauty and fine coastline. Calabar, with centuries-old connections to the English maritime tradition, stands out in Nigeria's sporting history for having hosted the first organised football matches in the nation.
The crunch match: Netherlands-Gambia
The Dutch youth system - renowned for producing some of the most technically gifted players on the planet - has been ironically unable to achieve much team success at youth or junior level. Current coach Albert Stuivenberg is hoping to turn that around, and can call on the talents of standout striker Luc Castaignos to help get the job done. Gambia, a rising power on the African youth circuit and continental champions twice running, may well pose a significant stumbling block the Jong Oranje's ambitions, however, when the two meet in the second round of games at the U. J. Esuene Stadium.
The opening gambit
"We find ourselves in a very even group with no clear favourites. The Dutch live up to their reputation; their players are skilful and tactically well-organised. Gambia are a typical African side, physically strong and direct in attack. We are still studying Iran but we know that they rely very much on (Kaveh) Razaei, their key man in attack," Colombia coach Ramiro Viafara.
Stuivenberg doet het slim door geen namen te noemen van spelers die in zijn ogen eruit steken. Natuurlijk herbergt deze lichting een aantal spelers die eruit steken. Op het EK waren dat Isoufi, Castaignos en Ozyakup. Benieuwd of andere spelers zich ook kunnen onderscheiden. Bouy? Labyad? Het wereldkampioenschap voor spelers onder 17 jaar nadert met rappe schreden. Wat kunnen de Nederlandse talenten verwachten in Nigeria? KNVB-coach Albert Stuivenberg blikt vooruit. In deel 3: de kracht van de selectie.
,Er wordt mij wel eens gevraagd wie nu echt de toppers zijn in dit WK-team. Maar wat is eigenlijk een topper? In mijn ogen is dat iemand die op dat moment er ten opzichte van zijn leeftijdsgenoten bovenuit steekt. Ik heb door de jaren heen veel spelers voorbij zien komen en van deze groep kan ik concreet zeggen dat er op dit moment geen speler bij zit die er met kop en schouders bovenuit steekt. Deze lichting is juist een ontzettend goed team.
Als je kijkt naar de tegenstanders die we het afgelopen seizoen zijn tegengekomen, zoals Duitsland, dan zie je dat daar spelers bij zijn die het verschil kunnen maken. De reden dat wij zo goed hebben gepresteerd, is dat wij als team uitstekend hebben gefunctioneerd en dus heel goed hebben samengewerkt.
De top halen
Of veel spelers uit deze WK-groep de Eredivisie gaan halen, blijft altijd afwachten. In elke lichting vind je wel spelers die het in zich hebben om het te kunnen halen. Neem bijvoorbeeld de lichting waarmee ik begon als KNVB-coach van Onder 17. In die groep zaten jongens als Leroy Fer, Daley Blind en Georginio Wijnaldum. Met dat team hebben we niet het WK gehaald, maar uiteindelijk zijn er wel veel spelers basisspeler geworden bij hun club. Ook uit het WK-team van 2005 hebben veel spelers de stap gezet.
Ook in deze groep zitten spelers die de stap zouden kúnnen maken. Maar of dat gaat gebeuren… Die laatste stap is vaak het lastigst. Sommige spelers trainen nu al mee met de eerste selectie van hun club. Dat is mooi, maar je hoort er pas echt bij als je straks vijftien wedstrijden in de basis hebt gestaan.
Een belangrijke kwaliteit van deze groep is dat de spelers zich ondergeschikt kunnen maken aan het team. Dat is volgens mij een belangrijke voorwaarde om je als speler te ontwikkelen. Om straks die laatste stap te maken. Juist daarom zou het heel goed kunnen dat hier straks ook toppers uit voortkomen.”
