Vennegoor of Hesselink is te lang volgens Bristol City

Bristol City heeft geen interesse in Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Gary Johnson, manager van de Championship-club, is weliswaar op zoek naar een targetman, maar de Tukker is niet in beeld.

'We konden zijn naam niet op de achterkant van de shirts krijgen, dus daarom zien we van hem af', verklaarde Johnson op de website van The Robins toen hem gevraagd werd naar de interesse in de negentienvoudig international, die momenteel zonder club zit.

De salariseisen van de spits waren het echte obstakel. 'Die jongen is dan wel transfervrij, maar hij heeft op een hoog niveau gespeeld en daar veel geld verdiend. Hij zou ongeveer driekwart van z’n salaris moeten inleveren om hier te komen spelen. We hebben dus geen interesse in hem.'

Vennegoor of Hesselink stond de afgelopen drie seizoenen onder contract bij Celtic, waarvoor hij 78 competitiewedstrijden speelde en 34 keer scoorde. Zijn aflopende contract werd niet verlengd, waardoor de dertigjarige spits op zoek is naar een nieuwe club voor het komende seizoen.

Police had to intervene as violence erupted amongst mainly Dutch supporters outside the ground after the game.
Avon and Somerset police said there were 10 arrests for assault and violence and disorder.
Of the arrests, nine were of Dutch fans, and one was a Bristol City fan.
Police spokesman Simon Whitby, said: "All the arrests on the night were outside the ground or in the city centre, before and after the game. There were no arrests within the ground itself."
He also confirmed that two more Dutch fans were arrested for possession of cocaine on July 14, the day before the game. They have been cautioned and released.

Interim-coach Southampton vreest Ajax
Het viel ons gisteren al op. Maar in Engeland wordt Ajax in ieder geval nog steeds als topclub gezien. De Amsterdamse ploeg wordt steevast 'Dutch giants' genoemd en ook Southamptons interim-coach Stewart Henderson is duidelijk op de website van de club: "We treffen een tegenstander van topklasse. Ajax is een zeer goede ploeg met een degelijke trainer en spelers met veel kwaliteit. Het zal een zware klus voor ons worden."


Ajax serieus
Henderson: “Ik heb de hoogtepunten van de wedstrijd tegen Bristol City gezien en zag dat Ajax hun oefencampagne erg serieus neemt. De wedstrijd leek niet op vriendschappelijk oefenpotje.”

De tijdelijke coach van Southampton heeft wel een strijdwijze voor z'n laatste wedstrijd. “We zullen onze huid duur moeten verkopen en waar mogelijk proberen er een spektakel van te maken. Als we achterover gaan leunen en Ajax hun spelletje laten spelen zullen we de bal niet veel zien.”

Dutch fans banned after Bristol City match violence

Two Dutch football fans have been given banning orders after violence flared before and after Bristol City's friendly with Ajax at Ashton Gate on Wednesday.

There were 10 arrests for assault, violence and disorder, including nine Dutch fans and one City supporter.

As reported by the Bristol Evening Post yesterday, police were faced with a 30-strong group of drunk Dutch fans, all carrying bottles and pint glasses, who ran at them in Canons Way near the city centre.

One, a 21-year-old student, was arrested for hitting a police officer. He spent the rest of the day and night in police cells and missed the match.

Another Dutch fan, a 25-year-old builder, was arrested at the turnstiles at Ashton Gate after he kicked an officer three times as police escorted 100 fans to the game. He too spent a night in the cells.

Both men got conditional discharges for assaulting police officers when they appeared before Bristol magistrates but were each banned from football matches in England and Wales for three years.

The court was told that the crowd being escorted was so hostile that one officer was forced to draw his electric stun gun. Police spokesman Simon Whitby said: "All the arrests on the night were outside the ground or in the city centre, before and after the game. There were no arrests within the ground itself."

Yesterday student Camiel Blok, of Duinen Burg, Hoofddorp, Holland, admitted assaulting a police officer, as nine of his friends watched from the public gallery at Bristol Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor Kirsty Allman said: "There was a hostile atmosphere. Many supporters had bottles and pint glasses. They were shouting and raising their arms."

Blok shoved an officer in the chest and swore at her after she told him drinking in the street was not allowed.

He ran off but was detained at the bottom of Park Street. Karen Jones, defending, said Blok had "consumed quite a bit of alcohol". She said: "He missed the match as a result of what he did and is very sorry for pushing the officer."

He was given a three-year football banning order, a one-year conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £60 costs.

Rick Halman, of Jan Peiter Hejes Straat, Amsterdam, also admitted assaulting a police officer on the Long Ashton bypass on the way to Ashton Gate.

He was given an 18-month conditional discharge, a three-year football banning order and told to pay £60 court costs.

The court heard that police were escorting a large group of Dutch supporters to the stadium when Halman was seen throwing a beer bottle which smashed.

A police officer took hold of Halman's arm but at that point other supporters dragged him away as he kicked the police officer in the legs three times. He was later spotted at the turnstiles and arrested.

He admitted kicking the officer and said he had been drunk. The court heard he had lost his wallet and passport, missed the match and would have to seek help from the Dutch embassy to get home.

Two more Dutch fans were arrested for possession of cocaine on Tuesday. They have been cautioned and released.

Bristol City spokesman Adam Baker said the club supported any police action and would take action themselves if anyone associated with the club was involved.

He said: "We abhor any trouble, especially for a friendly of this nature. We will support the police in any action they take and will take action ourselves if anyone associating themselves with Bristol City Football Club was involved.

"Overall, however, there were nearly 11,000 people attending the match, including many families, and it was a fantastic occasion. Ajax are four-times European champions and we hope to attract teams of their quality in future pre-season campaigns."
