Holders Albacete won their first league match - and keep the Helmond Cup.

Albacete won their first home game of the season: 6 out of 2 now.

For those who wonder when the Helmond Cup can get 'promoted' to a higher division: Albacete's first cup game of the season is on 07 September (in the second round of the Copa del Rey), but the opponents will be either Real Jaen or Ceuta, who are both in the 'Segunda B', just like Albacete. Third round, perhaps.

I was on holiday for a week, so we're two games behind. Here we go.

Albacete drew with Real Madrid B (1-1), so they still had the Helmond Cup when they played their first cup fixture of the season. Albacete entered the Copa del Rey in round 2 and beforehand we already knew that 'promotion' for the Helmond Cup was not possible: Albacete were up against the winners of Ceuta vs Real Jaén, both from the 'Segunda B', just like Albacete.

Albacete played Jaén, and beat them: 1-0. No draw for round 3 yet, but if Albacete hold on to the Helmond Cup for a bit longer, it might go up via the next cup round.

They are a Spanish based club and you can read all about the club here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD_Tenerife.

This was a 1st round fixture Copa del Rey:

wo 31 aug, 20:30 CCD Cerceda - Tenerife 2-0

So unless there is another club on the island, Tenerife is out. Hopefully there'll be enough Segunda Div teams left in the Copa to help the Cup reach the Primera Div again.

That's right: Tenerife are already out of the Copa del Rey. So if you would like to see the Helmond Cup make the jump to a higher division, all you can do is hope that - by the third round of the cup - the Helmond Cup will be in the hands of a 'Segunda B' side that's still in it.

*LOL* I see what you mean, but somehow that's pretty weird... I mean: why would it matter?

Personally I love weird, small little league with weirs, small little club names. When it comes to Helmond Cup football, Barcelona vs Madrid is not necessarily more fun than Albacete vs Coruxo, and the Spanish league is not necessarily more exciting that the Hungarian league. It's just fun to see which way it goes. I don't have a preference, personally.

The only thing is: you want it to keep moving from one league to the other, from one country to the other. And at the moment it's a bit stuck, that's definitely true.

Agreed. If the Helmond Cup would reside at Camp Nou for a couple of months, the Helmond Cup was of no value. You'd only have to watch TV to know where it is.

Personally, I hope the Cup will once be in the hands of Harkemase Boys. They play in the so-called Topklasse, which is the third Dutch level (after Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie). Yesterday they have beaten Eerste Divisie-side Willem II (relegated from Eredivisie last season) in the Dutch Cup (4-2). The last two goals were scored in extra time by a lad called Oebele Schokker, which I consider to be a fantastic name for a typical lower league football player.

Imagine the party if the Helmond Cup ever made its way back to Helmond Sport.

I'd rather have the Cup in a top league. I like it when it changes countries due to European Cup matches.

Tenerife lost the Helmond Cup this weekend. To Getafe B, 'the little Getafe'. For the second time in the history of the Helmond Cup the trophy is in the hands of a reserves team (the first reserves team to win it was Villarreal B, last year in the Segunda División.

By the way, I did some research for those of you who would like to see the Helmond Cup return to a higher level. There are a couple of chances coming up in December. Two teams from Group 1 of the Segunda B are still in the Copa del Rey (the Spanish Cup): Albacete and Real Oviedo. Both of these teams have been paired with a pretty strong Primera División side in the 'round of 32': Albacete face Atlético Madrid, Oviedo are up against Athletic Bilbao.

The 'round of 32' is a two-legged affair: home and away. First matches are on 08 December, return legs are on 21 December.

If you want the Helmond Cup to return to the Primera División, all you can do is hope that either Albacete or Real Oviedo grabs it before 08 December (and if they don't, there will be a second chance in the weeks thereafter). This is very well possible.

I didn't update the Helmond Cup thread last weekend, as my mother sadly passed away. She was only 59. I am very sad. The funeral was yesterday. It marked the end of a very difficult, intensely sad and also very hectic week (loads of arrangements to be made). I am still sad, of course, but not 24/7. I feel like doing normal things again. Ordinary things I always do... like updating the Helmond Cup thread, so here we go.

The last update was 31 October, when Celta de Vigo B won the Helmond Cup by beating Getafe B.

They kept it for one game (2-2 against Montañeros, last week) but lost it again today, to Real Madrid B, who are tops in Group I of the Segunda B at the moment with 27 points out of 13 matches.

Runners-up are Lugo, who also have 27 points, but two games in hand (only 11 played). They play later today and can leapfrog Real B. Next week it's... Real Madrid B vs Lugo!

Alright then. Here we go again.

Real Madrid won the big game against Lugo, remained tops in Group I of the Segunda B and kept the Helmond Cup in their possession. This weekend, on matchday 15, the Madrid derby of B-teams was on the agenda: Atlético B vs Real B. Real won (0-1) and that is excellent news to those who would love to see the Helmond Cup return to the highest level.

Next weekend, on December 4th to be precise, Real Madrid B (#1) play Real Oviedo (#4). Real Oviedo is one of the Segunda B teams that are still in the Copa del Rey (the Spanish Cup). Four days after their visit to Real B, Oviedo play a cup game against Athletic Bilbao, who are in the Priméra División.

So, if you want the Helmond Cup to get out of the lower regions of the Spanish Liga, you will be rooting for Oviedo next weekend and (if they win) for Athletic on December 8th!

BREAKING NEWS: The Helmond Cup seemed 'stuck' in the Segunda B, the third tier of Spanish football, but all of a sudden it can return to the Primera División. This week. Thursday evening, to be precise.

Real Oviedo (4th in Group I of the Segunda B) beat Real Madrid B and grabbed the Helmond Cup. Oviedo are still in the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) and are up against Club Athletic (a.k.a. Athletic Bilbao) on Thursday.

Exciting. Will the Helmond Cup return to the highest level...?

It should've returned to the primera división weeks ago so we could snatch it from Real Madrid.

But since it's not gonna happen wednesday we'll have to grab the Helmond Cup when we trash Barcelona in May.
