Oefenwinst Oranje op Cyprus
LANARCA, 30 juli - Het nationale mannenteam heeft de eerste van twee oefeninterlands op en tegen Cyprus gewonnen. In Lacarna werd het zaterdagavond 58-64 voor de ploeg van Gadi Kedar.
De bondscoach liet al zijn dertien spelers meedoen, hetgeen betekende dat Kenneth van Kempen, Dimeo van der Horst, Gerald Robinson en Craig Osaikhwuwuomwan hun eerste wedstrijd in het shirt van Oranje speelden.
Nederland startte matig en kwam met 16-9 achter. Twee driepunters van Rogier Jansen aan het einde van het eerste kwart zorgden voor de ommekeer, want Oranje domineerde het tweede kwart en dat resulteerde in een 24-31 voorsprong bij rust. In het derde kwart liepen de Nederlandse basketballers nog twee punten verder uit (40-49), waarna de zege niet meer in gevaar kwam.
Kedar was tevreden. “Het was onze eerste wedstrijd, terwijl zij al vier oefenduels hadden gespeeld. Het begin was slecht, maar we herstelden goed. Verdedigend waren we het grootste deel van de wedstrijd goed en agressief bezig. Aanvallend moet het nog beter, liep het niet gladjes. Ik ben blij dat ik iedereen mee heb kunnen laten doen.”
De bondscoach was vooral te spreken over Thies Theeuwkens die zeer effectief speelde en 13 punten scoorde. Hij gooide er twee driepunters (op twee pogingen) in. Topscorer was Rogier Jansen met 17 punten en vier uit acht driepunters. Stefan Wessels was met acht punten de derde scorer bij Nederland, dat zondagvond weer om zeven uur tegen Cyprus aantreedt.
