Ahh, good question. That's because gamma, at least in modern greek, is pronounced like a soft 'g'. The difference between hard 'g' and the greek 'γ' is sort of similar to the difference between the Dutch guttural as pronounced in Utrecht versus the 'zachte g' found down south: the hard 'g', as pronounced in English, is analogous to the real throaty guttural, while the greek 'γ' is, on its own, more like the 'zachte g'. Does that analogy make sense?

So putting the soft 'g' of the letter 'γ' next to a long vowel like 'ι' or diphthong like 'ει' makes an english 'y' sound, or something close to it.

In order to make the hard 'g' in Greek, you must put two gammas together, like Αγγελος, as in Αγγελος Χαριστεας, or Angelos Charisteas (to bring another Greek into the mix). And yes, this is also the same constuction used to create the english 'ng'. Incidentally, the greek 'χ' (chi) is pronounced like the Dutch 'zachte g'.

Make sense?

Actually, it is pronounced with the "ch" sound in Greek. That sound, however, doesn't exist in English, and is either turned into an "h" sound or not pronounced. But the "chi" sound, 'χ', is actually pronounced in a manner very similar to the so-called 'zachte g' in Dutch.

I say: play him from the start next week - and give the dude an 'applause substitution' at some point in the second half. He's been a very loyal sub for the past season and a half. He deserves it.

Johan Derksen just claimed in Voetbal Insite that Danny Blind has indicated that he wants Anastasiou to stay!
Yannis acts like a sort of mentor for the young players and Blind would like him to keep doing that. Apparently Yannis would like this as well.

What is Voetbal Insite ? A TV Show ? Is it reliable ? If that piece of information is true (I say if) then it's a good thing for the team. You always need experience and leadership in a team, and Yannis seems to be much appreciated and respected in the locker's room... Good move by Blind.

Voetbal Insite is a TV show, yes, and Johan Derksen is head editor of the magazine Voetbal International.

His news is usually fairly reliable.

I don't think it makes much difference. Derksen was very clear that Blind wanted Yannis to stay not so much as a player but as a mentor for the young players.

Rosenberg will be bought(?) to play. (perhaps instead of Charisteas, who Blind is not very impressed with according to rumours.)

Well that would be just great. Yannis has scored some really important goals for us this season and really deserves another contract (he can't cost that much......).

I really hope this is true...if he stays I'll get a Yannis shirt to celebrate. :blub:

Yannis Anastasiou kreeg twee maanden geleden van Ajax te horen dat zijn aflopende contract niet verlengd zou worden. De Amsterdamse club lijkt daar op terug te komen, want trainer Danny Blind wil de Griekse spits volgens VI niet kwijt. De 32-jarige Anastasiou speelt niet veel, maar neemt toch een belangrijke positie in binnen de selectie van Ajax.

Anastasiou, die in februari 2004 bij Roda JC werd weggeplukt, treedt vaak op als mentor voor de jonge spelers en fungeert als gids voor zijn landgenoot Angelos Charisteas. Dit seizoen speelde hij veertien competitiewedstrijden en daarin maakte hij vier doelpunten

Well it's the most dramatic news I heared in months because this means Ajax won't buy a new striker.It's cool for Yannis that he can stay and all, but seriously you think he's a full option?
His big weakness is his speed, and he ain't getting any younger.
Charisteas is also a striker who doesn't have enough quality.
So that mean you only have Babel...
We won't win the war with these strikers.
Blind says that when Yannis gets a contract he won't seek for another striker.
Pfff and Az are offering Arveladze a contract, he can leave for free from Glasgow, he would be the man we need

Ajax-trainer Danny Blind zegt in het Algemeen Dagblad (AD) dat hij niet zoveel spelers meer nodig heeft voor volgend seizoen. Gisteren werd bekend dat hij ook Yannis Anastasiou wil behouden.

Mocht Ajax Anastasiou daadwerkelijk een nieuw contract aanbieden, dan zal de transfer van een nieuwe spits naar Ajax deze zomer niet meer plaatsvinden. Wel verwacht men in ieder geval het vertrek van Hatem Trabelsi en Rafael Van der Vaart. In dat geval zullen er vermoedelijk hooguit een a twee verdedigers worden bijgehaald, vooral omdat Maxwell een zware blessure heeft.

Yeah, I agree with you. I still believe, that Charisteas will be as good as he was on Euro Championship. I hope, that following season will be the end of that curse, and we'll have good Greek in Ajax!
