And even if they're bad, the cost is minimal, which is what is so nice.

we are supposedly still talking to several defenders, including:

pato from mexico (already mentioned)
benfica's brazil CB luisao (seems unlikely, as he would cost a pretty penny)
cruzeiro's brazil U20 CB thiago heleno (supposedly a loan move... with option?)
werder bremen's serbia LB dusko tosic (who would be free)
vartek's croatia U-21 CB igor prahic (who would likely run about 2M)

and supposedly, we have reached a deal with one of the latter two and he is having a medical now

3 new players for the season should help our quest...long season ahead so i'm optimistic again. However, hopefully the board will look at holding on to these guys or searching out some more long term help

Two of them who will be playing in our youth team: Kerlon and Eduardo. Pantelic and Eduardo both a one year deal, Kerlon as well but with him Ajax has an option for transfer.

So we've signed a striker, a winger, and a defensive midfielder. Where is that defender? Have we reached the deadline?

They all seem to be good signings in terms of cost and promise for the future (that's if they don't get ushered out the door next season), but again I don't think they fix the biggest problems in the squad, or even attempt to.

I can only hope someone from Bluedaddy's post comes through.

also, the f-side site says we are interested in luiZao (a 22-yo) and not luiSao (the benfica veteran)... that makes more sense, but i have no idea who this luiZao guy is

From an attacking point of view I am quite happy but we wont win anything with that defence.

At the end of the day, if we don't have a defender that we can use in fairly short order, we will have generated a whole lot of light but not much heat. We got the reserve striker we needed and two talents that may pan out or not. But we still don't have a defender. Still, these are encouraging signs compared to years past where we got busts like Colin, Urzaiz, Luque and Kuffour and paid some money out to do so.

You know what's funny - all of us have seen this club go about their transfer dealings for a long long time. I just don't understand how all of us are so optimistic

I think it was the final match day two seasons ago. One of our defenders picked up a yellow in the next to last match and Lindgren had to do service in the back line for the final game. Did a passable job. Not saying that this is a solution to anything; just and observation.
