yeah but signing a proper defender might involve making an investment risk. that's not something this club does. no ambition. ajax is a big club in a small league that will tick over and make a profit each year, selling the odd talented player to prop up the books. there is a large enough loyal supporters base so that the club doesn't have to worry about winning things to fill the stadium. i actually think that the board don't really care if the club wins nothing. of course, in the long term (>10 years) it will be extremely detrimental to the club, both sportingly and financially, but who in the board is thinking that far ahead... nobody

I agree with spl (as usual): I also thought that we needed an extra central striker, and not simply a replacement for cvitanich, the only proper we had (although luis is very good as a CF, not only on the wings). Don't believe anymore this board has the ambition to buy still one striker, younger and maybe stronger than pantelic, who is a good player but not a long term buy. afonso alves would have been perfect. fuck off.
as for the missing defender: I am really really worried, tomorrow is the deadline and not even rumours about that. and with oleguer leaving we have only three: alderweireld still not ready, vertonghen who is adapted to the role, and wielaert who is simply not good enough to me.

cvitanich has already gone hasnt he? out on loan for the season back to argentina.

the dario deal is not done yet, 'cause ajax waits an amount of money (500.000 euros if I am not wrong) for the loan, then next year san lorenzo would have an option to buy cvitanich for a reasonable fee I hope (we spend 6.5 millions last year!!).
another target is gone: brazilian defender henrique has been loaned from barcelona to racing santander. oh, dear.

The way things stand we may not finish higher than 5th place -- it's a saddening thought after all the high hopes for the future at the end of last season.

Pantelic will only be a short term signing . As he is on a free he will not have played or trained fully since May and will not be match fit for a week or 2 . So if Cvitanich and Bodul go this week it only needs Suarez to get injured and we would have to play Jongebloet or Castillion from the reserves!!!!!!!

All i will say about our defence today is that it is homegrown and Atouba and Wielaert are no better.if we are going to struggle and not win the league, early days yet, I would rather we fill our team with our own youth rather than buy any more dross . I am happy with Enoh De Zeeuw and Suarez and think Cvitanich should be given more time but do not rate very highly anyone else we have bought .

I was not saying the defence today is good enough as it was not really tested but imo from what i have seen Atouba is like Urby ,good at going forward and crap in defence and Wielaert is not good enough . Talking to a Spurs fan the other day and he remembered Atouba by saying good at attack crap in defence .I said I had watched him 2or3 times and that was my opinion.Hope I am proved wrong but wont hold my breath.

So, apparently the Pantelic deal isn't done yet and we are rumored to sign one or both of these two defenders - 18-year old Eduardo of Cruzeiro and 21-year-old Frenchman Dervite of Tottenham.

We have two days left right? Or is today the last day. I don't see any movements

I think that might be a combination of his accent which is strong and his English which is possibly not that good-glad to have him on board anyway-now for that defender!
