Martin Jol has repeated once again that he is still looking for - yes Sir - a striker and a central defender.

Exactly what we need and it's good to see that he acknowledges it.

But... it seems like he will only get permission to buy if some fringe players are offloaded (which I can understand, really; we spent 35 million last summer and we can't do that every year). So let's put those agents to work: we want to get rid of Kennedy, Sno and a few others. Let's do it.

OK, Ko, he acknowledges the need for a central defender, but with less than 2 weeks left in the Transfer Window, will the staff upstairs agree with his need and make this a priority? Surely it's more important to get the right thing IN rather than concentrating on getting rid of the excess! If they don't pull their finger out, time will be up and any progress towards the Eredivisie title will be lost!!!

Let's make sure we get this defender in...also, before he plays in any competition which bars him from playing in Europe!!

I think we need 2 defenders. If Ogararu and Oleguer go we have only Silva and Vertonghen who can play defence on top of Sundays back 4. Given that Silva is a poorer defender than VdWiel that does not leave us much.

How can anybody conclude we need a striker after losing 4-3? We scored three goals away from home, at PSV. That's excellent. Scoring goals is not the problem. We let in four, that's the problem. If we are going to buy two players, then we need two defenders. At least. Nobody should be talking about a striker.

This was the problem with Jol at Spurs. At one point he had four first team strikers in Keane, Berbatov, Defoe and Bent,a whole host of midfielders and hardly any defenders. He'd only sign a defender after Spurs started leaking goals... this meant it was a last minute purchase, which is never good. He's doing the same at Ajax. He should have made signing (a) defender(s) his priority as soon as he signed his name on the dotted line on his contract.

Yes, Jol is right IMO, simply because if Suarez gets injuried, we'd be left with no striker.

I agree in part with you brian: scoring is not a great problem for us. but the fact is that we miss a certain kind of striker. one tall striker who can be a pivot in the box and improve our game. and even the performances of suarez and sulejmani, exalting their qualities in producing assists.
it's also clear that we need this striker as much as we need a true leader in the defense. and this one is an even harder search, especially in august, the 18th I really don't see who could want to join ajax. without money we need something similar to a miracle.
as for the honda affair, I would like him so much but I'm afraid - just to repeat myself - that he is too expensive.
having nine players to leave (sno, ogararu, oleguer, lindgren, blind, bodul, sarpong, vd heijden, martina) would be also a real miracle cause no one seems to want them and especially pay for them. for gabri and kennedy I am sure that they'll stay, at the end. I won't mourn for this, as they are at least experienced players for the bench.
we have two very difficult weeks in front of us. that's for sure, counting also the Europa League campaign that we can't afford to waste.
bloody hell. the only thing that makes me calm is that (forgotting the last result) I saw a team that knows clearly what to do when attacks. jol has worked well here. now fix the squad and let's start again.

Not anymore. That was an achievement a few seasons ago, but this PSV defense is crap. Even Venlo managed to score 3 goals. But for them that was enough to get a point.

So Ajax need:
1) A really good central defender

Ok, I'll dream on..... to be optimistic the bill above its'about 18-20 millions euro ..
maybe if we sell the nine out of grace we do 7 millions. add to the 7 we are due for huntelaar and to the 6 remaining from the vermaelen deal (we have used the other 6 for de zeeuw) we could do 20.

As I have just put on players leaving I do not see any money coming in so at best we may get aloan player in . Daily Mail said we could not afford Alves fee of £6m but could loan him. Trouble is he is probably earning about £40000 aweek . A loan or free transfer at best .

Alves would be Machlas II anyway.

Whe should spend our money on a proven defender or two. Why don't we sign a young, unproven striker and see how he gets on?

i agree not to blow big money on a #9, but your assertion that alves would be another machlas is beyond ridiculous... alves would score 15-20 goals for us, easy, and get another 10-15 assists AND he'd lift mickey up because those two have a telepathy

he was the first 20 games... the second 20 he was bad

besides, not doing great in the prem isnt exactly a reason to think he cant score in the eredivisie

less than two years ago, he was hitting nearly every week for two straight seasons alongside mickey

but yeah, we definitely have other needs to tend to before spending 8M on a striker

Manager Southgate wants to keep Huth if possible. that being said this is the type of central defender we could really use. Seems to have recovered from his injury.

we should have tried to get international dc sotis kyrgiakos from AEK. he was worth only 3 mil and now he is of to Liverpool to be more of a benchwarmer. a very good and fighting player

As for the Honda story, looks like he'll either stay at Venlo or go to PSV.
He's too expensive for us (which maybe true) but I really hope he doesn't go to PSV.

We need a fairly powerful Central Defender.....I'm watch Bas van den Brink at the moment, playying for Gold Coast Utd against Adelaide Utd. Looks to be in charge at the back...as he takes no prisoners! I see he's played for Utrecht, Emmen and Omniworld. I realise he's at a different level now, but people like this should at least be looked at and trialled!!!

You misunderstand me....I'm asking why people like this weren't noticed earlier....I just hope that we're not going to be a Newcastle and start throwing good money away on "iffy" signings.....there have been too may of those....do numbers 10 and 11 ring any bells???
