I agree. He's a solid aggressive midfielder, but at best he'll bring additional strength in depth to our squad which is already too big.

I think he's better than Lindgren and definitely better than Blind (sorry, I don't see it in the kid). But better than Enoh and Gabri...? Not sure. I agree that a midfielder like De Zeeuw was not really what we needed.

I think De Zeeuw is a good player and hopefully the experience is something that we wouldn't have been able to get out of someone else. I guess keeping in mind Gabri is 30 (seems like he was picking up injuries last year too), I'm more comfortable with it. I would still have rather used that kind of money (7.5M) to get another defender.

Good news that we're still trying on that, though.

I think we need somebody with a little more experience than Coates, the kid is talented but still has a lot to learn, he is very mistake prone when under pressure....take a look....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQBVxz85pfQ he had a horrible game at the worst possible time. Still maybe i'm being to hard on the guy, he could always learn a lot at Ajax.

For me, he's the better defensive midfielder than Enoh and Gabri, but i agree, that this position wasn't our weakest place. Still, i'll be glad if we will sign him. But then we definetly should sell some midfielders. Lindgren and Sno i would say. We will harm AZ if we will sign him, so it's double benefit

I hope he stays the whole season, but things seem to change around December. I would just hope the possible new signing this isn't Bruno Silva, Act II.

Lugano is one kick ass defender...he's the Captain of the Uruguayan nacional team. A fucking rock at the back and a force in the air.

If we get him i think we would be all set....Grab him while we can !!!!!

last night was a funny game for bruno silva, i was sitting there one minute thinking, he looks really good... going forward play making, nice crosses from time to time, then the next thing i know he costs us two stupid goals.. what a defencive clown

Daily Star in Uk gives a headline we are after Gareth Bale a left back from Spurs and will let them have Darko Bodul on loan . Now I do hope this is a windup as last week Jol said Bodul could go out on loan but he did not want him to sit on the bench. He would not even get on the Spurs bench. If he goes and looks good at Spurs he wont return and they will get a decent talent for nothing.

Do not see why we need another left back having signed Atouba.We need another central defender .

As for Bodul is Jol in Spurs pay?? He will get more time in our first team than with Spurs. If he goes to them we wont see him back here . His contract is to 2011 so the money he can earn in England will result in him staying in England. Spurs will either buy him on the cheap or he will go to another English club. a good talent and Jol is letting him go for nothing.

Please let this not happen but Jol still loves Spurs.

i didnt think we were in to loan bale, as far as i had seen it was a permanent deal, but i do agree we shouldnt loan him to spurs, send him somewhere in holland or maybe germany.. but no matter where he goes if he does well hes leaving us..

I am taking comfort at the moment from the fact that before the last 3 seasons started I was supremely confident that they would walk the league with all of the talent that they had at their disposal, whereas this pre-season I have not got, to put it mildly, a lot of confidence in the team so they will probably confound me again. Well lets hope so.

Not an easy start to the season though with away fixtures at Gronningen and PSV to contend with.

So apparently (according to De Telegraaf anyway) we're now after the captain of Uruguay and central defender of Fenerbahçe, Diego Lugano. 28 year-old, right-footed central defender. He's out of contract, so we can land him for free, but players in his position normally have a lot of options and they demand high wages.

I don't know the bloke, but it must be someone of a certain calibre, so I have a good feeling about it. Now let's wrap this up, for God's sake, cuz we really (and I mean really) need an extra central defender who can actually defend. Get on with it, Ajax.

To Ajax's defence (oh the irony...): one of the reasons why it is so hard to find decent players is the fact that the Dutch league starts extremely early this year. Many players are still in the middle of their summer break and they have plenty of time to make up their minds. Many simply don't want to commit just yet, so it's not just that Ajax are messing up on the market. The players are waiting for 'dream offers' from England, Spain or Italy. They can always say yes to a club like Ajax if no 'dream club' shows up. Problem is: the players have the time, we don't.

What did the Amsterdam Tournament tell Jol.......well, hopefully, that if we're not top at Christmas....he'll be under so much pressure that we'll see what he's really like!

He doesn't seem to have any idea what sort of formation he's going to play, mainly because his tactical nouse is almost zero! I fear that the results might end up as last year ... 6-0 one week and 0-6 the next....a great balancing act, but crap if you're going to win anything! With the "defence" we've got, it's a must for more than 2.5 goals a game.....every game!!!

lugano is exactly the defender we need. strong, good in the air, nasty (in a good meaning): a true bastard and very hard to get rid of, if you know what I mean.
the problem is that he has also juventus, lazio and palermo after him and, even harder, he gained 3.5 million euros in turkey.
mission impossible, we are f****d.

Hmm, well the thing is, if we sort out the defence then we only need to score 1 or 2 (which we can), but with the defence we've got, going on the last two games at least we need to score about 3 or 4 and that's just for a draw. I could defend better than some of what I've watched since Friday (and that's saying a lot!!!).

The thing I don't understand is that here we are, mere mortals, and we can see the problem but it appears that the management don't percieve this as a problem (or appear to do so).

Don't be too hard on yourself Brian - take your boots with you and you may well get a contract/game - especially if you are a mid-fielder
