Maybe I'm being overly pessimistic, but I fail to see a squad improvement over last season. I was looking forward to some signings that were going to address last year's glaring problems, and make the areas where we were decent even better.
So I look at the roster and don't see anything to give me cause for optimism. Barring some last-minute miracle signings, this year looks to me like it has all the ingredients to turn into the same disappointing nothing of a season that last year was. Something has to be drastically wrong with the current Ajax setup where we can't get any half-decent player to sign with us.

why would we get rid?? surely we could hold on to him, and he looked half decent when he was fit and played
Even more worrying now that River Plate have just sold a striker (
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story ... rs&cc=5739 ).....when he's played, he's done ok. Hope he's given a chance this year. Although it seems to be a inflated market and we haven't got much money....we
SHOULD be buying...not selling!

well i cant think of anyone at the minute who we could get for a decent price who would be any better than dario, so why sell him to TRY and get someone else in.. makes no sence to me.. lets keep him! and play him and give him atleast a chance.

And your basis for saying this is what, exactly?
Sorry, I just don't see why the first reaction always has to be to piss on the parade. I mean, you may be right, but it's a little early to tell - can't we give the guy a chance, for cryin' out loud?
My first reaction is not always to piss on the parade. When Koeman and Ten Cate were appointed I was delighted.
But Jol truly is a bullshitter extroadinaire. He can talk the talk well. But you know, he might do well. I am very happy that we've gotten rid of the whole technical director and team manager setup, and that one guy is in charge of all the football stuff, even if it is Jol. The TD/manager thing has been nothing but a disaster for Ajax.

Ok...he's in total control, and he might be a bit of a bullshitter, but he seems to be using the pre-season to weed out the "dead wood"....the only worrying thing is that, like tonight, that "dead wood" has destroyed a team, (Bristol City - 4-0 win), who were very close to the Premier league last season. There must be some good players there somewhere, and Jol seems to be "encouraging" them to play...and play as part of a team.
I think that he's got a very difficult job to do in reducing the size of the squad and the wage bill....and a good win at Southampton, followed by some good performances in The Amsterdam Tournament, will make things almost impossible for Jol. If "fringe" players have played and performed, they're not going to be satisfied with either bench warming or gardening on match days.
Let's hope that Jol is focussed on his main aim....that being the Eredivisie Championship and Champions League football next season...and that he manages properly.
The art of management is getting things done through others....let's hope that "others" respect their leader enough to produce the goods!!

I don't remember who discussed the matter a few days ago, but he will be happy : it seems Mido's agent has contacted Ajax to know if the club would be willing to offer him a new chance. The source is not that reliable though, as it is some "Ajax fans". More in Dutch :

we've been watching him for a while, and i very much hope we can get him because A) he's friggin' fantastic & B) we can eventually make a big fat profit on him when the big boys come calling

So I guess what I'm saying is, don't put me down as a fan.

My understanding is that the Tottenham Chairman was buying all of the midfielders for Jol which were mainly players he did not want.

This is correct, our old director of football Damien Comolli just bought random players "he" fancied and Jol was made to work with them...same story when Ramos was in charge, luckily when that went to hell our chairman sacked literally everyone and put old Harry Redknapp in charge of everything :)
Also rumour from Spurs' end is that Ajax are interested in our player Dorian Dervite, he's pretty nifty!

Perhaps this is his source:

"Tottenham Hotspur are ready to offer Dorian Dervite a new contract after he was linked with a move to Ajax, according to French newspaper L'Equipe."

Im guessing at this point as I've not spoken to her today, that Spurs realised they wanted him permenantly now he's returned from his loan spell with Southend United, especially when they found that a club like Ajax was interested, he's only 20, 21 in a few days apprently and so Spurs have obviously moved to keep him around, he's a good player though, would've loved to see him get some action in wit-rood-wit

Spurs are wasting Gareth Bale's talents and I'd love to bring him to Ajax, insists ex-Tottenham boss Martin Jol
Former Tottenham boss Martin Jol says he would love to sign Gareth Bale and says the north London club are in danger of ruining the Welshman's talent if they continue to not play him.
Jol, now manager of Ajax, bought Bale from Southampton two years ago, but the 20-year-old has been out of favour with Harry Redknapp and holds the embarrassing record of never having been on a winning side in his 23 Premier League games for the club.
With speculation mounting over the Welshman's future at the club, Jol says he would love to bring the left back to Holland and insists Bale can still have a great career.
'I remember seeing him for the first time when he was 15 or 16,' said the Dutchman, who guided Spurs to two fifth-place finishes. 'I saw those free-kicks, the corner kicks, the way he was up and down. He had that talent and he still has. Put it like this, I would love to have him.'
And Jol said he was influential in Bale's decision to come to White Hart Lane rather than other bigger clubs.
'When I got Gareth, I promised his mum I would play him. That’s why he came to Tottenham because there was another choice for him, maybe people didn’t know that. But I knew he was good enough to play and he would get better by playing because he his a fantastic, one of the best talents on the left flank in Europe.
'Maybe a lot was expected of him at such a young age but it depends want you want from him. Attacking-wise he is a big talent but that isn’t the only thing. He has a few things he has to improve on, as all youngsters do, but they only come from experience.
'I don’t think people should worry about his future. He’s at a great club but also somewhere where you have to be 100 per cent, you have to defend 100 per cent and always be at your best. But he must play games, that is simple. If he plays games he will get better.
'Going abroad could be a good thing if he plays because that is the most important thing.'
Injury has ruined Bale's time at Tottenham. In two seasons he has made just 39 appearances after a long period out with an ankle injury.
And summer knee surgery could further delay his comeback, allowing Benoit Assou-Ekotto to tighten his grip on the left-sided defensive role

At least if KJH is to sign for Spurs you will probably know before all the other fans!!!
Reports state Elm is likely to sign for Everton but we are still trying for De Zeeuw. Reckon we will get a midfielder and they are still looking for another defender. Looking at a young lad who has been at Southend does not make me jump up and down.
We still need another striker.4-3-3 is still a better system and this was shown in the second half on Saturday when we looked a much better team . Cvitanich is injury prone, Suarez is not a central striker Bodul still needs another a year before he is ready.

Ive been asking about KJH but he's not given anyone an answer...oh well
As for bringing Bale in...I had such high expectations of him at Spurs but he has a rather dubious honour...Spurs have never won a game in which he has played...
He's a good player potentially but he has had some shockers...and enjoys being sent off
