de Boer has apparently confirmed that Man City have declaired interest in sighing vertonghen. Also Spurs want either Steks or Given to replace Gomez.

Arsenal, Liverpool target Vertonghen tells Ajax: I am leaving

Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen has declared he is leaving Holland this summer.

The Belgium international is being tracked by Arsenal, Liverpool and Barcelona ahead of the close-season transfer window.

"It is unrealistic to think players will stay in the Netherlands until they reach 27 years of age," said Vertonghen.

"My goal for this season was to maintain a regular place and play between 25 and 30 games. I did that and it is time to consider a transfer."

Vertonghen has spoken openly of joining fellow Belgian and ex-Ajax teammate Thomas Vermaelen at Arsenal.

However, Liverpool are also in the mix, where Vertonghen is good friends with former Ajax captain Luis Suarez.

It would be cool if he joins Barcelona since they really do need help in central defense. That being said, I wonder what his best position is. I don't think he plays here for the Belgian NT and we have used him at left back (but he doesn't have the speed to play a true rushing forward fullback) and also in the midfield. I'm sure he will have his choice of teams and hope he makes the right decision.

Vertonghen has been a good player for us and will be difficult to replace. I think his best position is holding midfielder and I thought that's what he plays for Belgium. Too bad we haven't had proper central defenders the last few years or else I think we could have used him in that role.

Ooijer has proven capable of playing that position for us this season. I'm not saying his a long term solution, I'm thinkg of a n inmeddiate plan for sunday's decisive game. Playing Vertonghen in midefield could give us and edge against Twente with all his technical abilities on and off the ball. Plus a taller central defender like Ooijer could be important defending against crosses from the flanks which obviously Twente will try to employ.

once we win on Sunday the sales begin.

Steks,Vertonghen,V d Wiel, El Ham, Cvitanich,Silva ,Lindgren and either de Zeeuw or Enoh.

Lets hope they all leave as champions.

On Vertoghen at least Man City or Barca will pay what he is worth whereas Arsenal will just want to
sign him as cheap as possible.

I'm looking forward to seeing the players Frank wants to bring in, looking at SPL's 'For Sale' list, we're gonna have a busy summer.

If Man City bid for Vertonghen we will get top dollar (and maybe we could ask for a player like Santa Cruz to be included if we want a solid #9) but I feel sorry for him if he goes there, Arsenal would be perfect for him and Steeks.

van der Weil I think will join Luis at Liverpool, just a hunch.

Whatever happens lets just pray for good money from all the sales.

Anyone have a 'Player I'd really love Ajax to sign?'

I for one would love to see both Steks and Vertonghen go to Man United.
I think replacing Edwin with Maarten would be poetic.
And Jan would fit in with the United style of play and he could anchor their midfield but fill in for Rio or Vidic.

As for signings, I might be crazy but I want to see an influx of old boys: Chivu, Escude, Maxwell, Seedorf & Ibrahimovic if reasonably affordable.

Priority for us would be wingers and a really one man defence in the vein of Jaap Stam.

Stekelenburg
Wiel
Vertonghen
El Ham

That's it. Stekelenburg is already replaced by Vermeer, Wiel is horrible this year and will hardly be missed with Van Rhijn, Vertonghen needs to be replaced as will El Ham, but he is worthless half the season anyway.

Yeah, what he said. IMHO, the last thing the club should do is retard the development of its young players - which is, after all, its strength - by putting a bunch of over-the-hill guys in their way.

Yeah I also think we shouldn't stifle the young players development with over paid has beens. Youth development is the cornerstone of our club.

Vermeer looks a good replacement for Steeks, Anita could more than do the job of v.d.Wiel.

I'd like to see Moreno from AZ replace Vertonghen (if v.Rhijn is not quite ready), Steven Defour &/or Axel Witsel come in from Standard Leige to help Eriksen in Midfield and at #9 I'm stumped. De Boer has said he wants a player with Kluivert's skill set, so we'll see.

Definitely don't want to stifle the progression of the youth players but we must also have a couple of guys with top level experience to assist etc. the younger ones along. Didn't a certain side in the mid 90's have this sort of mix?

Lindgren is getting a free transfer even though his contracts runs to 2012 .He has been injured alot this season but this means he should get fixed up quickly as no transfer fee means another club should meet his wages.If we asked a transfer fee for him I could see him here still on 31 August and us trying to do some loan deal with us ending up paying most of the wages

Another player like him is Silva ie contract to 2012 and also not going to be sold for money.Give him a free as well and we should get rid of him quickly.
