huh? roy makaay? of bayern? he is a two-striker set forward, whereas vennegoor is all #9 and the best aerial forward ORANJE has - makaay has NEVER done admirably in de spits

i think you're just comparing their height and not their performances

makaay can jump and head the ball when he wants as well, just as well, if not better than VofG
he can score from close in with his feet
he can score from far out with his feet
he can dribble around people and score
he can lay the ball on for assists

Roy Makaay is the complete striker. Him not fitting into the system is bullshit, he's a complete striker. He can fit into any system. In his hey-day he was probably the most complete striker I have ever seen, more so than Van Basten even. Venegoor of Hesselink is the Dutch Peter Crouch, except slightly less skilled.

That the likes of VofG, Babel and Meerdink can get into the squad and he can't is unbelievable. It's a joke. Of course, Makaay is too polite a man to make noise about this, he'll just put his head down and work his socks off, like he always does. Perhaps his quietness has been his greatest weak point, especially in a Dutch squad filled with egos. Personally, I couldn't think of a better player to have in the squad.

Makaay like Seedorf...does really well at club level, but hardly anything for the national team. Forget them. But I just hope Kromkamp and Jaliens get injured so Heitinga can get in the squad he deserves it more.

Kromkamp is better than Heitinga. Kromkamp is more deserving of a world cup spot than Heitinga.

Dont worry about Vennegoor of whatever..... I have a feeling Makaay being dropped from the squad simply means that our Man Klass is going to the World Cup.

Just a hunch ( ;) )

He's a smart ass too, you got to love him, he knows how his team stands and he knows that the simple fact of being the Netherlands already makes the team a favorite to Win, so what does he do he speaks the fucking truth...plain and simple, no false hopes nore high expectations.

Everything one step at a time ;) :xyxthumbs:

well as it wasn't difficult enough for Australia at the WC. Schwartzer, Cahill AND Kewell are now all in doubt due to injuries over the weekend.

Cahill could probably be replaced within the team, but Kewell would be a huge loss, esp as he is just about back to his best at Liverpool over the last few months.

Schwartzer is probably one of the best keepers going around at the moment.

Fingers crossed they are OK in time. Kewell is a worry however as it was his groin that went. This is what kept him out for so long over the past year or so.

There's a report on NOS Teletekst:

Both Rafaël van der Vaart and Nigel de Jong will undergo surgery on Tuesday and are unlikely to see any more action for Hamburger SV this season.

A 'screw' will be removed from Van der Vaart's ankle. De Jong will undergo an operation of his right knee. Both midfielders are in Holland's provisional squad for the World Cup. The expectation is that the duo will be fit in time for the tournament, which will start on 09 June.

.....but should be fit in time for the World Cup. Say, those doctors who possibly just took out one of NL's best players for the WC wouldn't happen to be German would they (trying to avoid consiparacy theories...)

Maduro is more threatened, since he may be out for a month and the deadline is just around the corner...

Good to see another traditional Aussie soccer squad named. Reflecting true cultural diversity. Mark Schwarzer, Zeljko Kalac, Ante Covic, Michael Beauchamp, Tony Popovic, Marco Bresciano, Jason Culina, Vince Grella, Stan Lazaridis, Josip Skoko, Mile Sterjovski, John Aloisi, Mark Viduka.

Pity the poor commentators.

If a commentatory can't say 'Schwarzer' at a German held World Cup, I don't think they should be commentating at all...I guess they won't have to worry about pronouncing any New Zealand names this time around, unless a NZ ref gets a call up ;)

While on the topic of the Australian squad...another total tossa of a manager David Moyes is being his usual pain in the arse towards tim cahill.

From soccernet.com
Club v country row simmers as Aussies pick Cahill

SYDNEY, May 10 (Reuters) - Australia included injured Everton midfielder Tim Cahill in their World Cup squad on Wednesday, heightening the threat of another club versus country row.

Cahill injured his knee in a match against Birmingham last month and Everton manager David Moyes said the club wanted the final say on whether he could go to the World Cup.

'That will be decided by Everton,' Moyes was quoted as saying on the English club's Web site. 'He won't go the World Cup until we think he's fit.'

But Australia's selectors included Cahill in the squad, despite Moyes's reservations, saying they expected him to be fit in time for Australia's opening match against Japan on June 12.

'The Timmy thing is going to be fine, he's working very hard and all the signs are positive,' Australia's assistant coach Graham Arnold told reporters at the squad announcement on Wednesday.

'David Moyes hasn't been too friendly to us in the past but if he was to deny one of his players the chance to go to the World Cup then I'd say he'd have a very unhappy player.'

Australia's top players, who are mostly based in Europe, have often found themselves caught in a tug-of-war between the Australian federation and their European paymasters.

Clubs have been reluctant to allow the footballers to return home during the season, sparking a series of bitter rows with Australia.

Cahill himself went against the wishes of Everton by making himself available for two friendlies last year but Arnold said he did not expect any problems about Australia's decision to choose Cahill for the World Cup.

'Those days of club versus country are gone,' Arnold said.

'Logistically we haven't changed, we're still Australia, we still live so far away from the rest of the world in football terms and it's normal that the premier league managers are going to worry about their players when they pay them so much money.

'But we have no concerns about Tim and he'll be at the World Cup.'

Man that guy is a TRUE tossa. Can you imagine if he really tries that one. I am sure Cahill wouldn't be an everton player next season.
