Van der Vaart has been asked to stay at Madrid and has been given the Number 23. Good on him, I hope he can fight and get a place

Dennis Bergkamp

Dennis Bergkamp played a friendly game with the Ajax Veterans the other day, and Ajax TV filmed it.

And yes, he still has 'the touch'... Check this.

Lovely.

I particularly love the way he turns around and walks back. As if he just dropped a letter in a mailbox. He used to do that in 'real' games, too. Very cool.

Next to Suarez, he is the best forward we have. I think he should start this weekend!!! :blub.gif:

According to ESPN's match summariser Edgar Davids may be joining Vitesse if fimances can be agreed (so it's probably a non-starter).

The New York Times soccer blog has a new piece in which Clarence Seedorf responds to readers' questions. It's all fairly predictable, but he does talk about the Ajax youth system.

van't Schip to Oz...
http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,865 ... 40,00.html

Australian football's infatuation with the Dutch has intensified with John van't Schip appointed the inaugural coach of A-League club-in-waiting Melbourne Heart.

The Ajax Amsterdam assistant coach has agreed to a two-year deal with the Heart, who enter the A-League next season.

And the 45-year-old is convinced the new franchise can be competitive from the first kick-off.

"Already in the first season we want to be competitive,'' van't Schip said on Wednesday.

Not sure how I feel about this as technically Heart will be my clubs enemy... :confused.gif:

U.S. soccer player Charlie Davies involved in single car cra

Damn, this is tragic...
...forward Charlie Davies was involved in a single car accident in the early hours of Tuesday morning on the George Washington Parkway in Washington, D.C.
(snip)
Davies, a native of Manchester, N.H., played soccer for Boston College and decided to turn professional rather than become a Generation Adidas player and sign with an MLS club. He also did not obtain his college degree, rather heading to Europe to sign a deal with Hammarby in December 2006 after an unsuccessful trial at Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam.
I didn't even know he had ever been on trial in Amsterdam. :-(

Very, very sad.

I was shocked when I heard about this. He had real potential.

He may yet reach that potential. I found the following in a Washington Post story:

"Due to Charlie's fitness level, his prognosis for recovery and his ability to resume high-level competition is substantially improved," Kalbac said.

Let's hope this proves to be the case.

I know the stretch of the road where the accident took place quite well. There is little margin for error and the accident took place about 3 am in the morning. It was amazing at the Costa Rica match last night as everyone in the stands (save those cheering for the Ticos) held up the #9 at the nine minute mark in the match. Hope his recovery permits him to continue what was looking like a promising career.

Interesting (and sobering) piece in the New York Times on Michel d'Hooghe, the Belgian doctor who's the head of FIFA's medical committee, who had to revive Nico Rijnders after he collapsed on the pitch in 1972. (Rijnders, who had a congenital heart defect, died of a heart attack in 1976.)

Ryan Babel just redeemed himself with what was I think a 25 meter strike to keep Liverpool's CL hopes alive. Wicked bending shot after a good move on the ball to the middle. Maybe he will now see some more playing time.

Haven't seen Babel's goal, but sounds like a good change of pace. Also see Sneijder scored for Inter.

Unfortunately for Ryan, Lyon tied the match in the 90th minute. Liverpool looks like a Europa Cup candidate right now.
