There was an article in yesterday's Volkskrant titled "De kracht van nostalgie" in the Sport section, page 17. I was interviewed for this story, and it contains this excerpt:
Plotseling stort het steeds in, geen enkele trainer kan het voorkomen.’- Dat laatste is ook Jim McGough niet ontgaan. De 45- jarige Amerikaan uit Pleasant Hill, Californië begon halverwege de jaren negentig
I tried to access it online, but you have to pay to read it, using a Dutch bank account which I don't have, and besides I don't read so much the Dutch language.

Would anyone be able to post a translation of this story? Bedankt!

Grafite's 5th goal for Wolfsburg in the 5-1 win over Bayern Munich at the weekend.

Pure class but not sure he would have done this if they'd only been 1-0 up.... :excited.gif:

Nice little read...

The Joy of Six: European Cup quarter-finals

"Never mind Liverpool and Manchester United, Tom and Jerry, man and baldness: the most compelling rivalry in history is that between West Germany and Holland (and Bayern Munich and Ajax) in the Seventies. Best feud ever, man."

Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two friends were killed today when a minivan driven by an alleged drunk driver broadsided their car after running a red light, authorities said.

The crash occurred hours after the 22-year-old appeared in Wednesday night's Angels game. He died shortly after midnight when the minivan slammed into the car in which he was riding at the intersection of Orangethorpe Avenue and Lemon Street in Fullerton, police said.

Yeah, this is horrible news. I have no patience for drink drivers. They should be locked away.

This was particularly reprehensible. The idiot was driving with a suspended license. He's been charged with murder. Too right.

This young pitcher had phoned his dad and convinced him to fly out to California for this game, saying something like "I think something special is going to happen tonight." He should have gotten his first Major League win, except the bullpen blew a 4-run lead. I'm sure they're shattered about that today.

So sad...

Really sad. This guy has been the organization's top pitching prospect for some years and he was on the verge of a break through as an Angels starter after spending a year at each of the Angels' farm clubs (Rancho Cucamonga, Arkansas and Salt Lake City).

Yeah, as I understood it he was drunk when it happened and his DL was already invoked after prev DUIs. Also he ran a red light to cause this crash (killing three) and then pulled a hit and run afterward. On top of all that this is a high profile case since the victim has now become a celebrity. I imagine a few of my tax Dollars will go towards housing this guy for the next number of years. The guy is a dangerous idiot and should never drive again.

Sad news for Philadelphia Phillies fans today. Harry Kalas, aged 73 and Phillies broadcaster for 38 years, passed away at 1:20pm this afternoon. He was taken ill while preparing for a baseball broadcast . Fittingly, he passed away in the broadcast booth ( in Washington , D.C. ) . I feel like my uncle just died. He was a part of a great many families for many years. :sad.gif: :sad.gif:

Just a quick note of congratulations to the Dutch cricket team who have come fourth in the ICC World Cup qualifiers (play off with Kenya for third place, but that's irrelevant). It means they qualify for their third consequitive World Cup, retain One Day International ("ODI") status for four years, and get money (500.000$) to develop the sport in the Netherlands.

Well done chaps....

Is this being played in place of the Amsterdam Tournie. Certainly sounds more entertaining :ajaxsmiley.gif:

Baseball, softball and fancy dress in Holland

British teams are invited to enter the third annual Quick Summer Tournament for baseball and women's fastpitch teams, to be played on August 29-30 at the club's home fields in Sport Parc Sloten in Amsterdam.

But the catch is that teams have to play in fancy dress and exhibit what the Dutch are calling "crazy attributes", which will give a clue about the kind of tournament they have in mind.

The tournament slogan is "Proud 2 Be Fout", which translates as "Proud to be Wrong".

For a fee of 25 euros per player, the club will provide accommodation in army tents on Friday and Saturday nights, breakfast, dinner, a goody bag and a Saturday night party.

My God...

It's Queens Day in The Netherlands, but the whole thing has just been called off. The royal family were visiting Apeldoorn, but all of a sudden a black car raced straight through the crowd (hitting people left and right) and crashed into a monument. very clearly not an accident: it had raced through two 'rings' of fences and security personnel. The coach with the royal family was just driving by. They saw it happen right in front of them. The driver must have 'aimed' for them.

Wounded people in the street. Two confirmed dead; local news network claims there are four fatalities.

There are several videos and pictures on http://www.rtlnieuws.nl/ (some of them shocking).

This should have been a party. What a sad day.
