Hen ten Cate said that Charisteas can look for another club now. Our coach said that Ajax have a lot of good strikers and Charisteas is 4th or 5th (even after Poepon) one, so it will be bad for him to waste the time on a bench.
A few days ago Charisteas said that he is ready to stay in Ajax. I don't know what he will do now... Ten Cate's words sound like he really does not see Angelos in the first squad. It could be a big blow for Ajax - even if we have a few other players. I would like him to stay in Amsterdam, he could be helpful (just like he was last year).

The thing is Charisteas isnt a technical striker like Rosenberg, Babel, Huntelaar and even Poepon. So I think its in everyones interest that he leaves.

Well, I think that strikers' role is to score the goals, not to make a circus on the pitch. Angelos is not as good as Ronaldinho, Henry or Ibrahimović in technique, but he scores when he has a good chance. He's rather Inzaghi's kind of striker - just a vulture of penalty area. But it doesn't mean that he is worse player than the rest.

That is the reason he needs to stay, sometimes you need some muscle up front, sometimes skill is not enough, some times you need to score an ugly cornerkick goal to win a match by the least of margins, thats when you need harry. I think it's a bad idea to let him go. On the other hand Ten Cate might see something special in Poepon and for that reason might want too give him some more playing time, in that case it might be a good idea but since i have not seen this chap play yet i cant really form an opinion about him.

I'm surprised by the news. He has always been a very hard working player and he has managed to score a good amount of goals for Ajax. I thought he was going to be the number one alternative behind Huntelaar for this season as our striker.
But, Ten Cate must have his reasons for taking this decision. On the other hand, now I'm really curious about Poepon, I hope he can end up being a very important player in the future for Ajax.
In my opinion, I hope Charisteas stays. He is not very gifted technically but he does give his best every time he plays.

I would love for Charisteas to stay,he is a pros pro a la Anastasiou, but there is no denying that the younger, equally tall Huntelaar, Rosenberg, and Babel make playing time for Harry very unlikely. No one can say that Huntelaar and Rosenberg aren't physical strikers; ones who will create a collision or put a body on an opponent to gain an advantage. Babel has the size to do that. Throw in Poepon and it's even less likely Harry would play.

Like you guys said, Ten Cate hopefully knows what he is doing.

I hope he does, but I'm in favor of keeping Charisteas -- he's said he wants to stay, and he's a good player and good guy.
However, if the club can get some cash for him, like maybe 3 million euros or so, that would be ok.
I hope HtC is right about this, but I'm a bit skeptical.

I think it's a money thing as well, to be honest...
KJH, Charisteas and Rosenberg were multi-million purchases and probably earn quite a lot of money. Babel and Poepon are youngsters from the Ajax youth, probably with slightly more modest contracts.
I think what the management told Ten Cate was (roughly) something like this: "We have three expensive purchases for one position and that's too much: we want to offload one of them. For each position we can afford two fully-fledged, grown-up footballers on the payrole, but not three. The third man must be a youngster, if only because we want to develop strikers from the youth system."
And it makes sense too, actually.

I think he will do alright there, but not spectacular. If we can get a nice price for him both Psv and Ajax will profit, which suits me fine. (I'm not hoping for weaker opponents, just for a stronger Ajax)

that's what I said last week. Better sell him for 2 million to a foreign club then for 3 million to PSV.

Both Charisteas and Jan VoH are similar kind of strikers, so it is possible that Koeman would like to buy Angelos if VoH leaves PSV.
But I don't want to see Charisteas in PSV... It will be better for me if we sell him to another league - Bundesliga, Premiership, whatever. I don't want to see Harry scoring a goal against Ajax.

Yeah, what ever happened to the Vennegoor transfer (wasn't it to Porto)?
Last update I heard was that the whole thing was off.
But it makes perfect sense that PSV would only be interested in Harry if Frankenstein of Assholink f*cks off.

Latest update on the VI website... Charisteas says that there is no contact with any club at the moment. He does not know anything about interest from PSV and he is a little bit unhappy with the transfer fee Ajax demand for him: 5 million euros.

Porto is still in the running now that they sold Benni, but Celtic is also in the running for "long john"

Selling him to PSV sounds a really stupid idea. :pukey: PSV have been good enough on their own the last few years. Do we really need to help them?

I hope van Geel isn't dumb enough to sell Charisteas to PSV. I think that if he is sold, it will be for about 3 million euros, hopefully to Germany or England.

According to VI.nl Angelos Charisteas has turned down offers from a few Russian clubs, including Dynamo Moscow. The Greek striker does not want to move to Russia and told his agent to look out for clubs in Germany or England.
