Ajax regain top spot
Thu, 27 Nov 2003

Ajax Cape Town got their league challenge right back on track with a comfortable 3-2 win over Zulu Royals at a rainy Newlands Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The game got off to a controversial start when it turned out that the colours of the teams kit were clashing, forcing Royals to play in t-shirts! The Urban Warriors came out and played some entertaining soccer in the first half, taking a 2-1 lead into the half-time break.

Josep Ngake added to his tally of four league goals when he fired the Cape team into the lead in the 20th minute.

The goal came from the right flank — Wilfred Mugeyi beat his marker and sent in a lovely cross for Ngake, who beat goalkeeper Vusi Yashe with a header.

Ajax continued to dominate, with Mugeyi being influential throughout. Mugeyi had a couple of close chances, but it was left to DRC midfielder Tshinyama Tsholola to add to the scoreline after Ngake beat the Royals keeper down the right hand side. The angle was too tight for 'Lebo' to finish, so he pulled the ball back to Tsholola to score with an easy tap in.

Jackie Ledwaba then gave the Usuthu some hope when he pulled a goal back on 45 minutes. The visitors counter-attacked while the Ajax players seemed to be thinking of the half-time break, and Ledwaba scored without Ajax defenders giving him much pressure.

But Ajax dashed any hopes of a comeback when Dillon Sheppard banged in a third goal right on the hour mark.

The goal came from a great through ball from Mugeyi, who was playing more like a midfielder than a striker, helping to set up his team's attacks.

Shane Poggenpoel gave Gordon Igesund a moment's worry in the 83rd minute when he came to clear the ball, but only succeeded in putting it into his own net, despite not being under much pressure.

But Royals were not able to take advantage of their lucky break and the Urban Warriors held on for their win.

The only negative moment for the home side came in the 90th minute, when influential playmaker Mulekalayi Kanku was sent off for a second yellow card.

Just before the start of the game Walter Rautmann, the Zulu Royals coach, and Gordon Igesund were talking to each other and Rautmann said that "what ever happens tonight we are still friends and we will still be friends after this game!"

The win sees the Urban Warriors shoot back up to the top of the table — they are now on 21 points while Chiefs have 20.

Although the Amakhosi still have a game in hand, coach Igesund will be delighted that his charges are continuing with the excellent start they enjoyed to this season.

Van Gaal To Visit Ikamva

Bron: AJAXct.com

Famed football coach Louis Van Gaal will be visiting Ikamva this week to cast an expert eye over the club and do a spot of talent scouting.

The former Barcelona, Ajax Amsterdam and Holland national coach is now the technical director of football at Ajax Amsterdam and is visiting Cape Town to make personal contact with the Dutch giant's satellite club.

Van Gaal recently replaced another famed Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker at the club and will view Ajax Cape Town's infrastructure as well as watch a few games played by the club's junior teams.

One game Van Gaal will definitely be watching is the clash between the Ajax under-19's and Sporting at Ikamva on Wednesday night.

Urban Warriors sign three players

Bron: AJAXct.com

Ajax Cape Town have just concluded the signing of Mkanyilesi Siwahla, Masonwabi Masetti and Ernest Mtawali.

While Ernest last appeared in Hellenic’s colours he is well known for his exploits in the middle of the park for Sundowns. A seasoned campaigner he is a accurate passer of the ball and is excellence middle field anchorman.

Mkanyilesi Siwahla, Masonwabi Masetti have been promoted from the junior ranks of the Ajax Cape Town Development Program. Mkanyilesi has just returned from London at the invitation of Tottenham Hotspur. The player trained with the Spurs U16 team and played in a friendly against Ipswich Town scoring two goals in their 3-0 win. David Pleat the Spurs Director of Football was impressed with Mkanyilesi and has promised a possibility of a return to White Hart Lane in the near future.

Masonwabi Masetti is also a product of the Ajax Youth Development program having represented the national U20 team recently He caught the eye of Louis van Gaal the Ajax Amstedam Technical Director and was impressed with this young soccer sensation and after seeing the player in action. On meeting the player Mr van Gaal encouraged him to keep working hard and that he will be monitored closely.

Gordon Igesund, the Ajax coach said, “We have monitored these two youngsters for the past season. The technical staff were impressed by their tremendous abilities and given the opportunity we are sure that they will do well. We have a fantastic development program and all credit must go to our junior coaching staff and Ad Zonderland for the work that they do with the youth. By signing Ernest we have added to the depth of our squad as he is one of the best passes of the ball and he adds stability to our midfield with his ability and vision. He is a player who makes things happen and despite his age we believe he can do the job for us. He is in excellent condition will be an asset to the squad.”

John Comitis, the Ajax CEO said, “ We at Ajax Cape Town believe in the development of our local players and in preparing them for the rigours of Premier League action. By developing our own players we allow our junior coaches time to iron out the weaknesses they find in a players game so that by the time they are ready for the senior squad they understand the system of play as well as what is expected of them at senior level.

Igesund speaks to fans

Bron: AJAX CT

Ajax Cape Town coach Gordon Igesund on Tuesday informed the club's supporters that he is not trying to steer away from the Ajax system of Total Football.

"Our supporters are used to the diamond style that we have been using since the inception of the club in 1999 and I am a great believer of that style, but I had to mix the traditional formation so as to accommodate players, like the Congolese players in the squad," explained the football tactician.

"It is hard when you have international players in the squad like Cyrille Mubiala who has played international football for his country for a number of years and to just tell him to adapt to a new formation can be very difficult."

Ajax Cape Town use the diamond formation from their under-11's to their under-19's, just like Ajax Amsterdam and 'The Coach' has promoted three players this season who have been playing this type of football since they were 11-year-old.

Granwald Scott, Mfundo Siwahla and Nhlanhla Shabalala, as well as Shane Poggenpoel who came up the previous season, are all products of the Ajax youth development programme.

"The junior players who are coming through know what this system is all about and players who never played it before will take time to get used to it.

"One has to be a specialized number 3, 4 or 10 and with time, we are going to have all the 18 players who have come through our development stages," explained the coach.

When Igesund joined the Urban Warriors two seasons ago, the team nearly got relegated from the Castle Premiership, but the Ajax mentor made some intelligent signings to give stability to the team.

"As a coach, I need to balance our style of play and winning, that is why I am going to Amsterdam on the 13th of October to meet Ronald Koeman, the coach of Ajax Amsterdam, so that I can understand how he has been mixing the players who have never played the type of football of Ajax and those that are used to the diamond formation type of football.

"Koeman is one of the greatest football coaches and I need to understand the way Ajax Amsterdam is playing because sometimes they are not using the diamond formation," said Igesund.
You're going to the wrong man. If that man is still around in that period of time.... :X

Zware straffen spelers Ajax Cape Town

Bron: Voetbal International

Ajax Cape Town gaat eigen stadion bouwen

Bron: AJAX Netwerk

Igesund - we are going to cause some surprises

Ajax Cape Town coach Gordon Igesund is confident that his team are going to cause a few upsets in the final stages of the African Champion's League.

The Cape Town side are making their debut in the competition and have done brilliantly to reach the final stages of this prestigious tournament, which attracts enormous interest from African countries north of the Equator and is slowly starting to gain popularity down south.

Against all odds the Urban Warriors did extremely well just to reach the last eight after they had travelled to Burkina Faso and Guinea, where they faced hostile fans, pitches in extremely bad states, poor accommodation and travel arrangements as well as bias refereeing on the pitch.

Igesund believes that these experiences have helped to toughen up his charges and firmly believes that his team are not just taking part in the tournament to make up the numbers.

"We really had to battle in the earlier rounds," said the three time Castle Premiership winning coach. "We really had our backs up against the wall, but the guys rolled up their sleeves and some of the youngsters really became men."

Igesund pointed out that the Urban Warriors now find themselves in very illustrious company as they face up to clubs rich in African Champion's League history, starting with the current champions, Enyimba, who have just won the competition twice in a row.

"We are really playing amongst the giants of African football. All of the other clubs have won the Champion's League at some stage in their history," said the Ajax mentor.

"These clubs boast massive support and they have the financial muscle to ensure that their top players stay at the club and do not move to Europe.

He continued: "I am sure that Enyimba hoped to be drawn against us as they expect us to be the whipping boys of the group, but we are going to go out there and surprise a few people."

Ajax's Champion's League fixtures are as follows:

June 26

Ajax vs Enyimba

July 10

Raja Casablanca vs Ajax

August 5

Ajax vs Al Ahly

August 19

Enyimba vs Ajax

September 11

Ajax vs Raja Casablanca

Newsletter Ajax CT schreef:29/6: Ajax fans promise smoke free season

A section of the Ajax Cape Town fans have promised to stop smoking dagga during matches in an attempt to increase the support the team is receiving.

Cape Town soccer is notorious for its low fan turn outs and some people have blamed issues like the smoking of dagga at games for the low attendances.

But now, following various supporters meetings around the peninsula, the fans who have in the past been guilty of smoking have promised to make Ajax Cape Town matches 'smoke-free' zones in a bid to get the fans back to the stadiums.

"We are sick and tired of going to empty stadiums week in week out," said Mark Kulp, who is the chairman of the Matroosfontein supporters branch.

He continued: "We want to watch games in stadiums that have a good atmosphere - both for us and our players. We are making an appeal to all football loving supporters in Cape Town to join us and put Cape Town back on the map as one of the leading regions in the country.

"We already contribute six players from Western Cape to the current Bafana team, yet we fail to be awarded a single Bafana game in Cape Town due to poor attendance in our local games."

At present the Urban Warriors are using the Athlone Stadium as their home base and Kulp has appealed to fans to turn out in their numbers at the home of Cape soccer, starting with Sunday's huge clash against Enyimba in the African Champion's League.

"Athlone stadium has been formally known as the Mecca of Cape Town soccer for the Past 20 years. Its time to re-claim those days and put soccer at the top. So come on Cape Town make your mark and be counted. Don't be a couch supporter Make your way to the stadium," added Kulp.

I'm learning quicklly - Granwald Scott

Talented young Ajax Cape Town midfielder Granwald Scott has come a long way in a short space of time and he is now set to test his skills against the giants of African football.
African club sides don't come much bigger than Morocco champions Raja Rasablanca, who will provide a true test of the Urban Warriors' ability when the two clubs meet on Saturday evening in a real 'North vs South' clash.

The 17-year-old Scott has already shown that he is quite at home taking on players sometimes twice his age in the PSL and is now hoping to continue his rapid rise to fame by showing no fear of Africa's biggest names.

Scott and the rest of the Ajax squad depart for Morocco later today (Wednesday), and the gifted midfield playmaker says that the spirit in the camp is at an all time high.

"Everyone is feeling great after the last result against Enyimba. We were hoping to pick up three points in that game (at the Athlone Stadium) because we knew that our next game was away from home, but everyone was very happy with the result against the African Champions," he told SASoccer365.

"The atmosphere in that game was fantastic and it has motivated the players even further, we are extremely ready and looking forward to taking on Raja Casablanca," added the player, who is tipped by many to become the 'next Steven Pienaar'.

Scott says that the Cape side are aware of the challenge they face against Raja, but will still going out into the field with the aim of bringing back all three points to the Mother City.

"We are going for a win for sure. A point would be good, but we are aiming for all three points.

"We won't be overconfident. We know that we are the under dogs of the competition and we know that we have to go out and give our all in the matches and remain focussed on the job at all times," said the Kensington-born player, who only turns 18 in November,

Scott admits that playing in Africa is a lot more demanding than playing domestic football, but he believes he is learning quickly and is confident that coach Gordon Igesund is helping to provide him with a smooth transition into continental soccer.

"I am still learning and this is why Gordon (Igesund) usually uses me for just 50 minutes or so. Playing in the Champions League is a big difference to playing in the PSL - the game is so much quicker and more physical and there is no time to hold onto the ball."

Ajax Hold African Giants

Ajax Cape Town continued to show that they can take on Africa's best when they held hosts Raja Casablanca to a 1-1 draw in a Champions League match played in Morocco on Saturday night.

Playing in front of a huge home crowd, the Cape side showed real character to fight back and score a late equaliser after Raja had taken the lead early into the second half.

As expected, the hosts came at the Urban Warriors from the outset and dominated the first half, but with keeper Moeneeb Josephs in outstanding form, Ajax managed to go into the break with the score still locked at 0-0.

The North African side took the lead a few minutes after the restart when Marawaan Zamama scored from close range after Josephs had failed to deal with a low cross from the right.

With 15 minutes to go, the writing seemed to be on the wall for Ajax when they were reduced to 10 men after Cyrille Mubiala was given his marching orders.

Raja must have had thought that they had all three points in the bag at that stage, but they did not count on a spirited fightback by Gordon Igesund's charges in the closing stages.

The Urban Warriors proved that they are a force to be reckoned with on the African continent, when with five minutes to go, substitute Nathan Paulse flicked the ball into the path of Mfundo Shumana, who showed great composure to bring the ball down and volley home the equaliser.

Comitis Praises Brave Ajax

Ajax Cape Town boss John Comitis has praised the team for the spirited performance they put on against Raja Casablanca in a Champions League match in Morocco on Saturday night.

Against all odds, the Urban Warriors held three-time African champions Raja to a 1-1 draw in their own back-yard.

The Cape side showed real character to weather a first half storm from the Moroccan side. They conceded an early second half goal and suffered a further set back when defender Cyrille Mubiala was sent off with 20 minutes to go, but instead of giving in, Ajax fought back strongly in the closing stages to grab a late equaliser through Mfundo Shumana.

Two weeks ago the Urban Warriors also held current African champions, Enyimba of Nigeria, to a 1-1 draw at the Athlone Stadium and are now in with an excellent chance of reaching the semi-final stages of the prestigious competition.

Ajax boss John Comitis was thrilled with the result which was obtained in front of a partisan home crowd in the Moroccan capital.

"This was a great result for us, especially as we played the last 20 minutes with 10 men,' he told News24. "Credit goes to Igesund and his wonderful squad."

Ajax had a fairly slow start to the tournament and twice won by penalties in the earlier rounds, but with each new game they play it is clear that the young side is growing in confidence and stature, as Comitis high-lighted: "The players are getting better each time we play," he said.

The Cape club's next task is to take on yet another one of the continent's giants and former Champions League winners - in two weeks time they travel to Egypt to face the might of Al Ahly.

On current form and with their confidence levels at an all time high, Gordon Igesund and his charges will certainly be hoping to take at least a point from the trip to Cairo.
