On the surface it may appear that the might of Soweto meets the minnows of Cape Town this weekend but a look at the current Premier League table suggests the contrary.
Cape Town's two PSL sides play the country's two glamour clubs, with Ajax Cape Town away to Orlando Pirates at the Johannesburg Stadium on Saturday afternoon, and Santos hosting Kaizer Chiefs at Athlone on Sunday (kick-off 5.30pm).
Far from being minnows, Ajax have taken the league by storm this season and are comfortably ensconced at the top of the log, eight points ahead of Pirates and a whopping 12 ahead of Chiefs.
It has been a remarkable tale of success for new coach Craig Rosslee. There were many doomsayers who doubted the wisdom of the decision to appoint the recently retired 37-year-old defender as successor to Muhsin Ertugral.
But Rosslee has slapped egg all over the faces of his critics while club chief executive John Comitis revealed the motivation behind the decision.
"No decision at Ajax is made lightly, everything is done in consultation with Ajax Amsterdam in Holland," said Comitis. "And Craig had their full backing.
"The technical director of coaching at Ajax Amsterdam worked with Craig in Holland, and was convinced of his ability to succeed at a higher level.
"Also, after Muhsin had laid the foundation, appointing Craig was the least disruptive move. He fitted into the puzzle because he knew the 'Ajax way' of doing things.
"Furthermore, as someone with deep roots as a player in the local game, there's not much anybody can tell Craig about how to succeed in the PSL."
While Ajax and Rosslee are setting high standards in the league, neighbours Santos have been cursed with inconsistency.
But they usually reserve their best for the "big clubs", so Chiefs, the Telkom Knockout Cup champions, can expect a torrid afternoon at Athlone on Sunday.

Ajax Cape Town meldt dat het talent Daylon Claasen binnenkort voor een stage bij PSV zal afreizen. Hij doet dan aansluitend aan een stage bij Espanyol. Eerder was hij al voor stages bij Anderlecht en Real Madrid. De 16-jarige centrale middenvelder kwam al uit voor Zuid-Afrika onder 23 en het eerste elftal van Ajax Cape Town. Ajax Cape Town is blij met de stages omdat haar jeugdspelers zo meer internationale ervaring opdoen op het hoogste niveau.

It is well known the Ajax Youth Development Academy has produced a number of professional players plying their trade in the PSL and abroad.
Until recently Ajax Cape Town can count 21 of the current 30 man squad at Ikamva coming through their Youth Development complex.
We have just confirmed the signing of Daylon Claasen by Ajax Amsterdam and he is joining the inform Stanton Lewis in the Amsterdam reserve team as from June 2008. As from 2008 a number of promising young players are waiting in the wings to fill the void left by Daylon Claasen.
The transfer window period is near and the poaching of players has started. It has come to our attention that Dominic Isaacs, Hans Vonk, Nazeer Allie, Eyong Enoh, Granwald Scott and Clifford Ngobeni are the latest players who have been approached directly or via their agents to join Kaizer Chiefs.
After seven hard years of true development Ajax Cape Town has finally put together a team that can challenge the best the league has to offer. It noticeable that a number of local clubs are celebrating years of existence, however they have no youth development players to show for the years of campaigning in South African football and yet they continue to dominate media attention and sponsors alike.
Obviously the emphasis of their success relies on the acquisition of players from other hard working teams dedicated to unearthing talent from grassroots level.
We believe that it is only ethical that clubs should follow the guidelines handed down by the FIFA/PSL concerning player movements/transfers.

Ajax Cape Town unearths another gem
Ajax Cape Town has unearthed another gem from their Ikamva Development Academy, his name is Thulani Serero.
John Comitis said, Serero has been in the Academy for 6 years. He has been with us since he was 11years old and is one of the few players that have come through the ranks at our Development Academy, from U11 to the senior team. He is 17 years old and signed a four year contract.
He is truly a magnificent player and has represented the national team at all youth levels. Thulani is a true Ajax No.10 with the skills and vision to match many of his fellow professionals with years of experience under their belt. We are excited about the prospect of watching Thulani make his debut for the PSL team in the near future.
I am proud to announce that the “Kaka” of Ajax has arrived, concluded John Comitis the Ajax Cape Town CEO.
The quietly spoken youngster is delighted to have realized his long term dream to play in the Ajax Cape Town professional team. Thulani said, I have always admired the Ajax PSL team and this is truly a dream come true for me as I will get to play alongside my favourite player – Bryce Moon. Now I aim to fight for my place in the starting line-up and represent South Africa at senior level.
Thulani was born and raised in Mapletla, Soweto. He started his football career at Senane Gunners at amateur level and moved to Supersport United before making the long journey south to further his football career at Ikamva. He has 15 (U17) and 10 (U20) national team caps and was part of the exciting Ajax teams that won the Supersport Cup, the Cape Fish and Engen U17 Knock Out Challenge titles.

Ze hebben er daar in ieder geval geen problemen mee om die jongen alvast onder druk te zetten. Ik snap daar niet zoveel van.
Als hij echt goed is mag ik aannemen dat we het even in de gaten houden. We moeten nu wel betalen maar ik neem aan dat we nog wel een 'zekere invloed' hebben daar om er voor te zorgen dat er niet een andere club met een groot talent aan de haal gaat.

Wij kunnen er natuurlijk moeilijk over oordelen, maar het is wel hoopgevend dat Ajax CT in Zuid-Afrika veel aantrekkingskracht lijkt te hebben. Voetbalscholen als deze zouden eigenlijk in meer van de minder ontwikkelde voetballanden met potentie gelanceerd moeten worden. In feite zou je dan kunnen naar een situatie waarin je de beste jeugdopleiding hebt in drie of vier verschillende landen (bijv. Nederland, Zuid-Afrika, China en de Verenigde Staten). Ajax gaat de vruchten nog wel plukken van deze samenwerking, denk ik.
Denk dat dat wel meevalt thomas.
Ik meen me te herinneren dat Ajax Amsterdam alleen op de eerste 3 spelers die naar europa gaan als eerste het recht had om te onderhandelen, daarna waren ze vrij om met elke club te praten.
Die eerste 3 spelers waren Pienaar, McCarthy en Lewis...

Ik meen me te herinneren dat Ajax Amsterdam alleen op de eerste 3 spelers die naar europa gaan als eerste het recht had om te onderhandelen, daarna waren ze vrij om met elke club te praten.

Lijkt mij ook. Ajax heeft per slot van rekening een meerderheidsbelang. Ajax heeft 51% van de aandelen in haar achterzak zitten als ik mij niet vergis. Misschien kan de dochter van Ajax ook de gehele scouting voor continent Afrika tot zich nemen. 't is geen gek idee. Misschien gebeurt het al, al lijkt mij dat bij nader inzien sterk.Thomas schreef:

Mooi om te lezen dat er sprake van kweek is. The Urban Warriors gaan momenteel als koploper door het leven, las ik ergens op i-net. Misschien dat zij ooit die (Afrikaanse) Cup met zijn twee kenmerkende grote oren in de wacht kunnen slepen...
Weet iemand hier trouwens hoe Missie Kaapstad ervoor staat?

Ze waren toch bezig om een soort van Meer te maken in een grote township, om het meer het volk erbij te betrekken (dus ook redelijk goedkoop en toegankelijk) om zo direct de populariteit te laten stijgen en echt een club van het volk te worden? KAAPSTAD - In tegenstelling tot 'moederclub' Ajax Amsterdam, weet Ajax Cape Town wel wat winnen is. De door het grote Ajax geadopteerde vereniging is momenteel dé sensatie in de Zuid-Afrikaanse profcompetitie en hard op weg om voor het eerst in de historie de nationale titel te veroveren.
De afgelopen week won de ploeg van de voormalige hoofd opleidingen Craig Rosslee achtereenvolgens met 3-1 van Bloemfontein Celtic, met 2-1 uit bij Black Leopards en gisteravond werd Thanda Royal Zulu met 3-0 aan de kant gezet. Hierdoor heeft de ploeg van doelman en ex-Ajacied Hans Vonk een voorsprong van vier punten op achtervolger Supersport genomen, terwijl de rijke Zuid-Afrikaanse topclubs Orlando Pirates en Kaizer Chiefs op liefst vijf en dertien punten achterstand zijn gezet.
Hans Vonk: "Het is ongelooflijk wat er gebeurt. Sinds Ajax hier begin 2007 is geweest, heeft de club een enorme impuls gekregen. We staan niet alleen bovenaan, inmiddels zitten ook drie spelers bij de nationale selectie en staan verschillende jongens in de belangstelling van buitenlandse clubs."
Ajax Cape Town is opgezet volgens de huisregels van de moederclub uit Amsterdam. Het team hanteert het 4-3-3-systeem en moet het vooral uit zelf opgeleide spelers hebben. Van het huidige basisteam zijn liefst acht spelers tussen de 19 en 22 jaar. Vonk: "Onze organisatie wordt als het voorbeeld voor het Afrikaanse voetbal gezien. Aanvankelijk leidden we alleen voor de grote clubs op, nu zijn we in staat onze talenten langer vast te houden en meteen komen de resultaten.
