On one level it’s obvious why media outlets might cover Manchester United and Liverpool more than City: these clubs have much larger fanbases and far more people are interested in what they’re doing.
But it also needs to be acknowledged that, unlike the confrontation between Pogba and that enraged United fan, City’s story lacks the essential elements of drama.

Whether they like it or not, most people see their treble as more transaction than triumph.
At Wembley, City brought on three substitutes – Kevin de Bruyne, Leroy Sané and John Stones – each of whom would have been the best player in Watford’s team. There’s no magic or mystery about why their squad is so strong.
They have a net transfer spend of more than £1.2 billion over the 11 seasons since the 2008 takeover. That’s almost 50 per cent more than their closest rival over that period – the Qatar-funded PSG – and half a billion pounds more than the team in third place, Manchester United.

It’s been the most successful week in City’s history, and the pity is that their manager, fans and PR department have seldom sounded more angry. It’s time to accept that oil-funded success and mass popularity are never going to go together.

It’s as though City are perched on the back of a dragon, peering down at a sullen populace, wondering incredulously why they are not loved. Shouldn’t it be obvious?

Ik zou er geen moeite mee hebben, City zal waarschijnlijk meer betalen dan Barca dan mogen ze hem van mij hebben. Nog mooier zou zijn als twee clubs uit Engeland tegen mekaar op gaan bieden.

The Man City boss reckons their treble is under-appreciated but there are good reasons why difficult questions have been asked

For a club which should be celebrating their success, Manchester City seem to be strangely preoccupied by Liverpool.
In the build up to their FA Cup final demolition of Watford, Pep Guardiola insisted City hadn't received the credit they deserved after a thrilling title race ended with them beating the Reds to the Premier League crown by a solitary point.

“Liverpool have gone 29 years without winning the Premier League - it's normal people are waiting for them finally to win,” Guardiola said.

“If Liverpool had won the Premier League it would have been an 'incredible' achievement. When City win it is 'oh, it's okay, it's an achievement'.”

In the same press conference Guardiola belatedly issued an apology to Liverpool “if anyone was offended” by the video footage of City's players and staff singing a derogatory version of 'Allez Allez Allez' mocking their rivals.

Moments after City clinched an unprecedented treble at Wembley on Saturday, one of their supporters bizarrely had the Reds on his mind.

After gatecrashing the press box, he shouted: “We've done the domestic ******* treble. No-one's ever done it before but you'll all have Mo Salah on the back of the ******* paper tomorrow.”

If Liverpool had lifted those trophies you could guarantee two things. Firstly, the party would still be going on now and secondly, City wouldn't have got a passing mention.

Guardiola feels that what City have done this season in sweeping the board domestically has been under-appreciated.

There is no denying that they have been sensational to watch but the Spaniard should be able to see why they aren't getting the universal acclaim that he craves.

For a start, they have investigations by FIFA, UEFA, the FA and the Premier League hanging over them regarding how they have conducted their business off the field.

Then there's the small matter of a net spend of around £1.2billion over the past decade which has created the most expensively assembled squad in the history of football.

During the most one-sided FA Cup final for 116 years City brought on £150million worth of substitutes in Leroy Sane, Kevin de Bruyne and John Stones. By the time the sixth goal went in even Guardiola looked embarrassed by the gaping chasm between City and Watford.

When you are bankrolled by the bottomless riches of Abu Dhabi, it's hardly a tale of overcoming the odds to triumph in the face of adversity.

It all underlines what a remarkable effort it was from Liverpool to run City so close this season.

But for Jurgen Klopp's men, there wouldn't have even been a title race. City, who finished 26 points ahead of third placed Chelsea, would certainly have faced more difficult questions if they had enjoyed another procession.

The sense of glee that was expressed in some quarters at Liverpool falling just short made little sense.

“You've ****** it up again,” crowed the Wolves fans on that dramatic final day at Anfield. They seemed oblivious to the fact that the Reds were signing off with a ninth successive league win to move on to 97 points. So much for 'bottling it'.

Liverpool recorded the third highest points tally ever recorded in top-flight English football – behind City last season and this season.

Of course the Reds' traditional rivals relished their misfortune at missing out on the title, but in truth they had precious little to crow about.

The points difference Liverpool enjoyed over Everton this season was the biggest ever with 43 beating the previous record of 41 from back in 1979/80 (when adjusted to three points for a win).

As for Manchester United, the 31-point gap was the biggest since Liverpool last won the title in 1990.

All those clubs cut adrift and playing catch-up should take hope from what Klopp has done at Anfield.

He has proved that it is possible to compete with City if you recruit wisely and have a manager able to drain every last drop of talent out of the players at his disposal.

Liverpool as a club has become a model for others to follow by showing you can live within your means and still challenge for the biggest prizes if the business side is run correctly.

It grates City that despite all their recent glory and despite all the money they have spent, their global fanbase is still dwarfed by Liverpool's.

It will annoy City still further if Liverpool go on to win the Champions League when they face Tottenham in the final in Madrid on June 1.

That's the trophy that their Abu Dhabi owners crave above all others and it continues to elude them. City have never been past the semis.

“I said before that I know we will be judged at the end on whether we win the Champions League,” admitted Guardiola. “I know unless we do that it will not be enough.”

No wonder the mood among Kopites remains buoyant as they prepare to depart en masse to a second successive Champions League final.

If there's the triumphant finale at the Wanda Metropolitano that they crave, you can guarantee that Liverpool fans will be too busy living in the moment to give City even a moment's thought.Too right. It's the biggest prize in European club football. There is no greater accolade.

Liverpool stand just 90 minutes away from winning it for the sixth time. And they have got to the final the hard way having beaten the champions of France, Germany, Portugal and Spain along the way.

Ajax had de betere kansen, Spurs werd bij vlagen echt gewoon weggespeeld. Spurs speelde Ajax nooit weg. De goals kwamen ook echt uit de lucht vallen. Maar goed.
