18 MAR 2021; Young Boys-Ajax; Europa League Round of 16

Bericht door Orange14 » ma mar 15, 2021 12:53 pm

Ajax take a 3 goal lead into the return match in Switzerland and also did not concede an away goal. Mazraoui is still not training with the team while his eye heals. Blind and J. Timber are the big uncertainties for Thursday's match. If Ajax continues to defend well, they should move on to the next round with ease.
Appie Nouri will forever be remembered for his grace and humanity on and off the pitch!

Neres is also a major doubt. Therefore Idrissi may have to start. As for the defense, unfortunately we are going to have to play Schuurs, since J. Timber is absent.

Schuurs only makes one huge mistake every game and we can afford to concede one goal. He just needs to avoid getting a Red Card.

It should be a clean sheet, I am expecting Ajax to score a goal in the first half, and then one early in the second half, then Young Boys will collapse. I am predicting 0-3. As I stated in the previous game thread, I am not worried about this tie at all. I am just concerned about the quarter finals. My first choice would be to play Granada as they are one of the weakest of the 8 that will likely qualify = Man Utd/AC Milan, Tottenham, Arsenal, Rangers, Villareal and AS Roma

Schuurs reminds me of a less extreme Mike van der Hoorn. Is he just unlucky or is he bad at making decisions on the field?

Schuurs belongs to either PSV, AZ or Feyenood.

Contrary to popular opinion, I would like to see Schuurs replace Timber at RCB. I like Alvarez at DM now and this way we only change 1 player in 1 position.

Timber along with Mazraoui unavailable as he is getting over illness.

Schuurs at RCB , I would play Blind in DM rather than LCB. Martinez should stay at LCB and I rate Blind better than Alvarez at DM

Ajax seem to be on par with most of the other clubs who are likely to qualify for the quarter finals of the Europa League. I wasn't expecting Ajax to get past Lille but here we are. I mean to do that, and to breeze through a tie with a team that knocked out Leverkusen, Ajax may be the top two out of the remaining teams.
Ajax may be the top two out of the remaining teams
After the win against Lille Bookmakers did make this top 4:

1. Man U
2. Spurs
3. Arsenal
4. Ajax

Man United will have a difficult night against AC Milan and Bookmakers almost always rate English teams too high.

Milan has never won this trophy. That makes that teams like FC Barcelona, Juventus (maybe Bayern?) and Ajax are in a very exclusive list of clubs that won all ever organised club trophies and Milan is not.

Granada makes their debute in Europe and they play almost as annoying as Getafe with almost zero sportmanship.

In the next round Ajax will probably be at least equal to most teams and favourite against all Spanish, Scottish or Czech Republic teams that will be left.

True, but Ajax are in prime form unlike February last year when they had to play Getafe. Granada are too weak to match up to Ajax. I hope AC Milan beat Man Utd, although I think it will be 50/50, Man United need a score draw of at least 2-2 they are capable of that, and Milan are vulnerable at the back. If Ajax don't get Granada in the quarter finals, then I will settle for Arsenal, Rangers even AS Roma, since they scraped wins against Young Boys.

I also think AC Milan vs Man Utd is a 50/50 game, would not be surprised if Man United manages to get through in an away game. But you never know, perhaps Milan even beats them with a high score.

Rangers in quarter final seems on paper a not such a difficult draw, but it's impressive for how long Rangers are already unbeaten. In Scotland, but also in Europe it started with qualification against Willem II and a couple more rounds to get in group phase and still in March they have lost zero EL games. Slavia Prague had way more chances than Rangers, so it seemed 7 days ago.

Ajax taking revenge on Spurs and then directly also on Mourinho or Ajax beating Manchester United by clear numbers also sound like attractive perspective and in my opinion not impossible. NOTHING IS impossible for our great club.

There are parallels between this team and the 1992 Ajax team that won the Europa League/Uefa Cup. E.g. Jurrien Timber is shining which is identical to how Frank de Boer shined for Ajax in 1992 esp. in the final against Torino. I really want Ajax to prove the critics wrong, they are claiming that Ajax of 18/19 was a one season wonder team, i.e. a flash in the pan as opposed to a force to be reckoned with.

Lineup -
Stekelenburg;
Rensch, Álvarez, Martínez, Tagliafico;
Gravenberch, Klaassen, Blind;
Antony, Tadić, Neres

Bench -
Scherpen, Kotarski, Schuurs, Klaiber, Ekkelenkamp, Labyad, Kudus, Idrissi, Traoré, Brobbey

I actually like this lineup as well. Blind in MF brings some cover and a lot of creativity.

Just before our kick-off I watched most of the game between Arsenal and Olympiakos.
Christ on earth what a poor level of football. Even in the Eredivisie I almost never see RKC Waalwijk and FC Emmen sink so low.

Not a good half from Ajax. YB were dictating the shape of the game and had plenty of possession near the Ajax goal. Seems the goal has finished off the tie though.

Some sloppy defending in the first 15 minutes but then things settled down. Ajax get a really good away goal. Tie should be over.

I caught the last 15 minutes of the Spurs game and a bit of the ET before the Ajax match. Really happy that Mourinho has to go back to London with no more Euro matches!!!

Another goal and we can then send on a few subs .

Spurs are out which is wonderful news Mourinho and his anti football Ko'd. Arsenal through but they are a poor side who apart from limping through v Benfica have only beaten poor opponents.

If Manu and Rangers get ko'd it will be a poor night for Uk teams.

At this point I would not worry about any team left.

yup. I’m very happy that they lost. Way things are going mourinho might lose his job. Very happy for Zagreb. They are a dangerous team with a very good defense. Last time they did this well in Europe was when they gave us a hard time in their late 90s me thinks

Yep I remember that game, 0-0 away and 0-1 at home, as Witschge failed to mark the player who scored. Then again he was played out of position.
