Home opener is this Sunday!!! Tagliafico is suspended for the match. Eiting is off to England, and Dest may be off to Bayern. I guess the club is going to have to play full out offensive football and outscore opponents.

I remember when ten Hag played Neres as the number 10, it didn't work so he change it, hopefully after this game, he will learn that Promes is not suited for that position either. I predict a slow start in the first half, possibly 1-0 or even 0-0

Kudus come in, Gravenberch isn't fit. Martinez slots in at left back for (suspended) Tagliafico. The only changes.

Great game by Kudus so far. He's popping all over the field and putting in a great defensive shift as well.

Nijhuis being Nijhuis. He missed the handball+penalty and it was totally 50/50 on the disallowed goal. He was next to that tackle and allowed the play to go on.

Would like to see at least one change. Taylor > Alvarez.
I remember Ten Hag mentioning about getting a rising star from Jong Ajax to pick up where Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt left off. Kenneth Taylor is just what the doctor ordered!

Comfortable so far and should continue to be in the 2nd half.

The ESPN feed dropped out at the 88th minute so I missed the end of the match. RKC are not a very good club and will likely be relegated. Several VAR calls in the match and they were all spot on. Ajax had two goals called back and RKC had a player sent off all because of the video official. Ajax had good ball movement and defended well enough. they still look to have trouble when the give the ball away and the other team has a chance to break. RKC are not the kind of club that will punish Ajax but come the Champions League, this will lead to goals.

Player Ratings:

Onana (6) - had hardly anything to do
Martinez (7.5) - superb headed goal and played a good FB in place of Tagliafico
Blind (7) - solid defensively
Schuurs (7) - strong defensive game and had some advances up the field
Mazraoui (7) - didn't have much defending to do and his passing was good
Alvarez (7) - had one give away in the first half and a rocket of a shot in the 2nd that went just wide
Kudus (7.5) - fine all around game and should be starting going forward
Promes (7) - maybe out of position but more than decent on the day
Tadic (7) - good game for the Captain
Labyad (7) - victimized by VAR on a goal but got one later on; had a wicked free kick that was well saved by Lamprou
Antony (7) - some very good passing on the day
Neres (5.5) - rusty when he first came on but improved play later in the half
Traore (5) - did not see much of the ball
Dest (5) - had one shot that did not come close to the frame
Lang (6) - very busy in a brief stint coming on late
Huntelaar (NR) - on late

I thought all the calls that were changed with VAR were marginal. I find it a real drag - I don’t think the original calls were so bad to warrant waiting around while they roll the footage back and forth for two minutes. Except the handball, which they wave on immediately.

No real resistance from RKC. Biggest question for me is Álvarez. If he looks that poor against eredivisie relegation candidates are we really going into the CL with him in the starting 11? Guessing he is first drop if Gravenberch and/or Nico are available.

Agree about Alvarez. Kudus was outstanding on debut but Alvarez was just ok.No way is he good enough for us Martinez would be vastly superior in that position.

Alvarez would not look outstanding if you put him in Jong Ajax with all the teenagers

ETH is seemingly convinced about Alvarez being our best #6. He is a solid backup to be honest and not terrible, but we hopefully he proves us wrong.

I will say that he has improved since last year. Maybe a run of games will give him confidence to show us more. I can only hope.
