A mid-week cup fixture is coming up at Cambuur. Jong Ajax defeated them a couple of weeks ago and were not troubled. I expect Bosz will rotate the squad and we may see a bunch of the kids play along with several of the veterans. This should be a relatively easy match with the emphasis on "should." As we have seen this team seems to be able to turn any game into one that is difficult.

Ajax got lucky in the EL draw, facing Legia Warsaw in the two stage tie that will be played in February.

Frenkie de Jong is a defensive midfielder

Frenkie does the DM role but can play as attacking midfield.Last game v Jong PSV Eiting played DM and Frenkie more attacking.

Los Chicos did not have a very good half. Turnover by de Jong gave Cambuur a great counter for the first goal and de Ligt letting the striker split him gave them a 2-0 match. Not much passing by the midfield until the final several minutes but they couldn't get a shot on goal. A little surprised by the play as this is pretty much the side that dominated Cambuur several weeks a go in a Jupiter League match.

Younes, Schöne and Dolberg for Cerny, de Jong and Dijks. Seems a bit desperate. Dijks was awful in the first half.

So, no triple this year. Little feisty Cambuur is through. Sad to see our kids weren't up to the task. We brought the "big guns" in and did create pressure for the Cambuur defence, but we missed that Sergio Ramos never say die attitude.Weak.

Utter rubbish. I have praised our kids up until now but tonight they showed they are not ready. Dijks is not good enough and when he came on Younes too showed he is not good enough .Sadly Cassierra has never impressed me and is he really good enough for our 1st team ? Cannot believe Zivkovic or El Azzouzi aren't as good. Clement did ok considering .

de Ligt got caught cold for 1 of the goals but who will play CD on Sunday! Riedewald would have played today if it were him so I assume de Ligt will play.

Los Chicos dug the team in too big a hole to climb out of. Even with three first teamers coming on after the break, Ajax could only pull one goal back and are now out of the Beker Cup for the sixth straight year. Not many positives at all in this match with only a few chances on goal that were not realized. The lone goal came off a long corner from Schöne to a totally unmarked Clement who made no mistake and headed it home. The three young midfielders all had very poor matches which was disappointing for both them and those of us who see them as the future for Ajax.

Player Ratings:

Boer (6) - could do anything on the two goals
Dijks (4) - just ordinary and nothing more
Viergever (5) - had a great chance on goal that was well saved
de Ligt (5) - very good in the 2nd half but has to eliminate the position mistake that conceded a goal; those are always punished at the higher level
Tete (4.5) - offensive liabilities were well on display and even defensively was below what he can do; maybe his heart is not with Ajax any longer
van de Beek (3) - woeful performance with too many turnovers
de Jong (3) - poor ball handling and a turnover conceded the first goal
Nouri (4.5) - best of the three starting midfielder and had a couple of shots on goal
Cerny (3.5) - mediocre at best
Cassierra (3.5) - total non-factor
Clement (5) - created a little bit of danger and managed to score the lone goal as he was not defended on the corner kick
Dolberg (4) - contributed nothing as a sub
Schöne (6) - still capable of creating some offense
Younes (3) - too much selfish play that led to turnovers

PSV on Sunday and Viergever will be missed.

Fair ratings. Biggest worry this was Cambuur ,whom our Jong beat a couple of weeks ago with a weaker team out.Our 3 midfielders have played superbly together all season and did well in those last 25 mins v Panathinaikos but worryingly tonight were aweful. v d Beek a de Jong were woeful and Nouri only slightly better.

Yesterday ,like last Sunday, we were back to the boring football of de Boer. The kids played poorly , but normally in Jong Ajax they are coached and prepared by Keizer , a coach whose idea of football is similar to JC and models his Jong side on Barca style of football.

We had hardly any chances last night against a mid table Jupiler side that a very young Jong Ajax comfortably beat 2 weeks ago. Last Sunday we created about 3 chances v Twente .

Is our football now any better than under de Boer.Watching these last few games I would say no.

We need 5 new players , 2 full backs who can defend and also can over lap and attack. 2 wingers worthy of the name who dont run into blind alleys or think they are Ronaldo.And finally although Dolberg is doing very well he risks burn out and we need an older experienced back up . Cassierra doesn't look that special when playing for Jong Ajax and is certainly not good enough at present to be a 1st team back up.

And the 2 new full backs and 2 wingers need to be a bit older ,ie at least over 20.

I was thinking exactly the same thing!!!! There was very little interplay in the MF. Of course some of that might be a result of Cambuur's changed game plan. They employed a very high press when Ajax had the ball that resulted in lots of back passing. Now that might be the preferred approach by Bosz as compared to Keizer. Cambuur took advantage of each major mistake by Ajax in the first half and got goals, appropriate punishment. We have seen such things in the past when the opponent was not able to capitalize.

It's my feeling that Bosz is better than de Boer but he is still not getting the best out of these players.
