KNVB Cup, Second Round.

Kick-off time at the Amsterdam ArenA is 20:45 CET.

The great Gerrie Mühren, legendary left-footer of the 'Golden Ajax' from the 1970s, passed away today. He suffered from MDS and was only 67 years old. He played 298 matches in all competitions for Ajax between 1968 and 1976, in which he scored 72 goals. His most famous moment as an Ajax player, however, was not a goal but a little juggle, a keepie-uppie demonstration, at the Bernabeu in the European Cup semi-final at Real Madrid, April 1973. Watch the footage at the beginning of this video. A classic Ajax moment, a symbol of the power and swagger of that team.

After his player career Gerrie Mühren worked for Ajax as a youth coach, a scout, an individual 'skill coach' and what not. I met him a couple of times: a very friendly, modest and soft-voiced man, a kind-hearted Volendammer in a team of Amsterdam street-thugs (Hulshoff, Suurbier, Krol, Rep and of course the two Johans).

A great Ajacied has left us. Rest in peace, Gerrie. The club will miss you.

P.S.: It is beautifully symbolic that the next home game at the Amsterdam ArenA is... Ajax vs Volendam, for the KNVB Cup. The two clubs of Gerrie's heart. I'm sure there will be a gesture from the two sides.

Chance to rest a few and my lineup would be Cillessen Ligeon,V dHoorn,Denswil, Boilesen, Klaassen ,Duarte,Enoh, Sana,Hoesen, Andersen .Denswil the only starter from today and would be nice to see him with a right footed partner as Moisander is not right footed and I do not think it is working with Moisander on the right.

Poulsen is the only DM and can only play once a week so why not give Enoh a go he must be better than Schone at that position. Klaassen is just feeling his way back after a long injury and this would be a good workout .

NB Jong Ajax's next game 30 Sept home to Volendam and like this one will probably be on TV so will see alot of Volendam this next week!

I pretty much agree with you on the lineup and maybe some of these players will show enough to play next weekend as well. Klaasen has to be better than de Jong.

this is a huge game in a way. We have lost two games in a row without scoring a goal and 8 have gone past vermeer. For confindence sake I'm hoping for a win and more importantly a solid performance. If we crash out of the cup at home against a jupiler team the team will be in chaos. Agreed that this a chance to try a different starting 11 cause let's face it, there is something missing.

Edit: Well, I guess talk about crises or chaos is premature even if we lose, but it would be worrying. In fact we have strarted the first half of the past seasons slow so in that sense this is nothing new. But in the past seasons I have felt that there is lot of potential to do better. Now I'm not sure. Can we play better football with the current starting 11? I think we need some changes.

Halftime. We're pretty much having our way with these guys so far -outshooting them something like 15-0 - but only up 1-0. Come on, guys, let's put some more in the net already!

80% possession and only one goal that was well taken by Andersen after a couple of passes from Hoesen and de Jong. The team had some other decent shots on frame that were well saved by the Volendam keeper. Ajax are superior and I don't think Cillessen has had to handle the ball more than a couple of times. Of course this being Ajax, if it remains a tight game the club will start to feel the pressure.

Like the look of Andersen and Ligeon must be quicker than Lukoki and given he is a defender his crossing is better which cannot be hard as Lukoki's crosses were rubbish .

Blind made up for his bonehead positioning by deflecting what looked to be a sure goal. He managed to play two men on side!

Sure didn't want to see extra time. Poor display of football in the second half. How did Schöne miss that shot? de Sa delivered a nice cross to de Jong but he couldn't put the ball away. Too many attacking players are under the delusion that they have Messi-like skills; the don't. This team is going to have to scrap for every point this season and it's not going to be pretty.
