Indeed Vitesse away will not be an easy one. Interesting to note that they have only won 3 times at home and 7 away...weird actually. Very fortunate that the Eredivisie leading scorer, Bony with 16, will not be available.
Vitesse regardless does have a very good squad with a couple old friends: van der Heijden and Theo Jansen. Ajax will have to take this one very serious. Wonder who will be at right back?

Good goalkeeping from both sides and we did get some very good fortune on the on goal. Poulsen is not having the best of games and put Moisander in trouble so that he had to pick up the Yellow card. Again we have loads of possession but it's going to be hard to break Vitesse down as they seem to be happy to sit back and wait for a counter attack opportunity. Hard to say that this will end up 1-0.

Probably five players at fault on that one. Nobody seemed to want to track van Aanholt. Crap defending at it's best. I thought we were past all that.

Overall a very poor performance with Vermeer rightfully MOM. Our first goal was a fluke deflection and once they scored they were clearly the better side. They had more chances than us and the 2nd and 3rd goals left our full backs for dead . Toby is too slow to be a full back , Veltman had a decent game apart from letting Janssen in for the goal.

We were never in control of that match. Lucky to be 2–0 up but Vitesse were creating chances the whole game.

I thought our attack was the weakest part today Fischer Boerrigter did nothing and Lukoki and Sana may as well not come on . Siem has scored important goals whilst playng the striker role but is not a striker and I just want to see a proper striker play at No 9. Babel injured today and Siggy makes his comeback for Jong tomorrow.

Vitesse did indeed creat chances throughout and deserved the 3 points .As Tom rightly said we were never in control of the game and were indeed luck to be 2-0 up.

It's one thing to lose to a team who is physically and skillfully much better, it's unacceptable to lose to a team because of an absolute mental breakdown. This is what we witnessed today. The last 30 minutes of this match were reminiscent of last season's meltdown against Utrecht. Let's hope that his is just a one off and not a portent of things to come (one wonders if Alderwiereld played in the middle whether things would have been different; I don't think he would have been beaten by Janssen as Veltman was).

Player Ratings:

Vermeer (8) - brilliant saves and undone by terrible defending in the end
Blind (6.5) - very good game except for the terrible defending on the goal where he was never in any reasonable position to help out
Moisander (6.5) - stupid Yellow card but Poulsen left him no choice
Veltman (5.5) - really not very strong and this will be an ongoing issue, poor on the Janssen goal
Alderwield (6) - why was he caught so far inside when van Aanholt broke free, otherwise one of the better players on the pitch
Poulsen (5.5) - some very poor plays on defense putting other teammates in unacceptable position
Schöne (5.5) - negligent defending throughout the match and not a force on offense as in previous games
Eriksen (6) - didn't make any defensive errors but didn't do much else of consequence either
Fischer (5) - hardly had any touches throughout the match
de Jong (6) - fair to middling match
Boerrigter (5) - was he at fault for not tracking back on van Aanholt? did very little to pressure the Vitesse defense
Sana (5) - didn't play any better than anyone else on the front line
Lukoki (5.5) - did at least make an effort to beat his man but nothing came of it
Hoesen (5) - just coming on he made a hash of a possible break away that could have tied the match

Midweek cup tie with Vitesse followed by two relatively easy league matches with VVV and Roda. Matches like today really should have been put to bed in light of the distractions that will be coming up with the EL competition.

Horrible to lose a two goal lead like this.

Moisanders yellow card means he will miss the next game. So we won't have our regular back 4 in the next game either. I guess Veltman will have another chance? or could it be Denswil, who is left footed like Niklas.

Well I have just had my 10K cycle ride ,at 61 I am trying to keep fit , and thinking about our problems . As I said in new players thread a couple of days ago we need to sort out our wingers.4 were used today and imo were the 4 poorest performances on the day. Boerrigter on the right and Fischer on the left with Babel when fit being a sub seems to be the plan for the rest of the season. Lukoki is very fast but needs to go out on loan to get regular games and hope to improve. Talk of Newcastle wanting him was the funiest rumour involving an Ajax player this month .(Evidently he does not speak french ) I don't rate Boerrigter on the right and from what I have seen so far Sana is not good enough .

The other major concern and has been all season is the fact that although our regular back 4 have played well we have nil experience on the bench. Today we played Toby at right back , he defended ok but is not quick enough and V Aanholt left him for dead for the 2nd. Ligeon is the 2nd best right back at the club and only Lukoki is quicker than him . I doubt had he played today he would have been outrun by the Vitesse LB .Toby is our best CD and had he been in the centre today Janssen would never have brushed him aside like he did with Veltman .

Next week we play VVV without Moisander and the 2nd best left sided defender is Denswil and imo he should play alongside Toby with Ricardo back. If Denswil is not picked then I wonder how he and Ligeon are going to improve playing for Jong Ajax for the rest of the season especially if they are not deemed good enough to just come in as standby for 1 match.

We are geared towards youth but games like this ie 2-1 up and clinging on we need an Ooijer type to come on like he did last season. An old head who would have sat there and controlled the defence.In theory Poulsen has that experience but he had a poor game today.

@SPL - glad to see you're still on the two wheeler! I'm four years older and walk about 5 miles a day and then do about 40 minutes of yoga to keep the back limber. If you think we played poorly, I'm now watching Liverpool get thrashed by Oldham in the FA cup. Don't know if they can hold the lead, we'll have to see.

I cannot disagree with your thoughts on the club. Toby does play a lot of right back for the Belgian NT as he's not going to displace Kompany any time soon. I think our midfield and wing players were most at fault today. They just didn't want to play any kind of defense and as a result counter attacks were plentiful. We were fortunate in having one of the best shot blockers in Europe between the posts. VVV are down at the bottom of the table and I think Denswil needs to play against them, if only to give him some confidence.

Quite right and this is where Ajax have been quite deficient over the past years. It is also the difference between Twente (who seem to always win one goal matches and defend with purpose) and us. This must drive FdB absolutely crazy.
