Ajax's first fixture in the new year: a friendly at the great Vasco da Gama football club of 1898.

I am not 100% sure, but I think this game will be played at Vasco's home ground in Rio de Janeiro, the Estádio São Januário. Kick-off time, I think, is 16:00 local time.

Ajax will fly to Brazil on Sunday 6 January.

Babel and Siggy will be back in full training and will go to Brazil although neither are likely to play . Could be end of Jan before either gets on to the bench for the first team.

Of the other 3 long term injured Serero was fit before Christmas to get a couple of games in for Jong Ajax but has been picked by SA for the African Nations Cup so it will be mid Feb before he returns.

Boilesen is not expected to play before the end of March according to his Dad and Klaassen as mentioned already is still out with a groin injury and return date not known.

I really wonder about Ajax's constant long term injury problems.
It seems we've been operating for years with a constant ratio of 20% of the players out.
Is it just my imagination?

No, it isn't. It's just badly organized training process and bad scouting. Both have been a problem for years.

Siggy has been given the green light for full training and an update on Klassen ,he says he hopes to be playing in March. Hope we do not get any injuries in Brazil.

Looks like the lads may catch a break weather-wise, relatively speaking; weather.com is predicting a high of 89 F (32 C) in Rio de Janeiro for Sunday 13 January, cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain.

My father was born and raised in Rio, and I remember the first time we went down there from California for Christmas, to visit my grandparents (who lived in an apartment a block and a half from the Copacabana Beach). I was 9 or 10, and completely befuddled by the fact that it was the height of summer there - Christmas was supposed to be cold! It was 105 F (40 C) every day, with absolutely staggering humidity, and I actually burned a layer of skin off the bottom of my feet walking barefoot on the beach. Good times....

I knew a guy at university who would only date fat girls. He was a strong, muscular guy. Worked out a lot. This is the slowest pitch I've ever seen. The ball just dies out there.

It's quite funny watching how much we're struggling to play the ball on this surface. It reminds me of a hack golfer trying to get the ball out of a bunker...

Quite right and it makes for a very boring game. I'm out of here, off to a concert.
