Bad luck Jags. I watched the highlights of the Queen of the South/Aberdeen Semi Final yesterday - amazing game, it really looked a good one to be at. They said after the game that you never know which version of Aberdeen will turn up but apparently this was both (good at the front/bad at the back)SaddlerIan schreef:Rangers 2 up!!!

I didn't read the full four pages, but here's what happened: before kick-off Groningen fans the hundreds of toilet rolls from the North Stand. They had their club's permission to do this. Then, someone set the paper on fire. The fire spread quickly over the North Stand. Plastic seats started to melt. The fire caused panic: people jumped onto the pitch and started to run towards the exit. One lady broke her ankle. Four people had to be brought to a hospital with burns. Nineteen were treated because they had trouble breathing.
Meanwhile, the two teams were still in the dressing rooms. These rooms were full of smoke (it was everywhere). The reason for the club doctors to give a negative advice was the fact that many players of Groningen and Ajax were nauseous, had headaches and trouble breathing. The doctors feared that the air inside the stadium was polluted and perhaps poisonous because of all the melted plastic seats.
It looks like the game will be played on Wednesday with fans of both clubs in attendance. One question, though: we got kicked out of Europe for a season once (and after that we had to play three home games in Germany) because some idiot threw an iron bar that hit the goalkeeper. Is there a fundamental difference with this incident? One moron doing something stupid, game called off and the players were directly affected... There is a difference, I guess: the iron bar of 1989 hit only one player. This idiot jeopardized the health of two entire teams plus the people on the stands.
It would be a scandal if Groningen get away with this.

Yeah. Firstly, there was a lot of smoke in the dressing rooms. The players were complaining about nauseousness, head-aches, dizziness and what have you.Manneken Pis schreef:BTW Official reason for cancelation is the smoke, and the effect it would have on the players.
Secondly, the smell on the pitch was pretty bad and the doctors couldn't guarantee (without a scientific test of some sort) that there were no dangerous chemicals in the air.
Correct decision, I reckon. Everybody seemed to agree.

Surelly the difference is intent.
Throwing an iron bar is intending to hurt someone.
If the fire was due to some overexcited farmer who was smoking and accidentally dropped his ciggie, the club getting punished would be harsh.
Is smoking banned in stadiums these days?
If so lax stewrding would be a legitimate cause for punishment.
On a different note I heard their fans had gone out to print "F#ck Ajax" t-shirts. It must have been a hell of an anticlimax if they hate us so much ....
