That's the situation that obtains here in Greece as well. It is understandable here, because the stadia (even the newest ones, like Olympiakos' stadium, the Karaiskaki) don't have the tunnels and enclosures to separate the fans, meaning the police have to escort away fans from the nearest metro stop. And the average Greek fan is considerably crazier than the average Dutch fan.

One of the worst rivalries, PAOK Thessaloniki - Olympiakos had gotten so bad that the PAOK fans would meet the supporters' buses halfway between Athens and Thessaloniki - 2.5 hours away from the stadium - and assault them with anything that wasn't securely bolted to the floor. Ugh.

Anyway, regarding the situation at hand re: Ajax - 010, I could never understand taking the train apart. Skirmishing with opposing teams' fans is one thing, but destroying a train before the match is even underway is another thing. To paraphrase Homer (Simpson, that is): "Alcohol - the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems."

Well, Ko, I am glad you are back and safe. I hope you and the other supporters will get the season cards back soon.
Otherwise our next home game will be like some silent movie.

Not quite... A majority of the parliament would be in favour of such a rule and they also have the support of Ajax and Feyenoord. But they didn't vote (or decide) anything yet. It will be discussed in the upcoming days.

Anyway, match report is now up, folks:

This kinf of measure will just make the situation even worse. No way the hardcore Ajax supporters will just stay at home for the most dangerous fixtures. As a result, they'll get on a train or in a car, go to whatever city : Rotterdam, Utrecht or Den Haag and cause ruckus. And the problems will be even more vicious because no one will know where they will be and when they will act.

excellent excellent point - in a dream world, the rotville authorities would take their share of the blame for the insanity... but we know that ain't gonna happen - i just think it is really sad that they didn't just arrest those 30 idiots and let the rest move on - it's like they don't even want to try and make the situation better

On www.sportinglife.com another version of the decisive goal :-

"The winner came in the 90th minute after Nourdin Boukhari crossed to Trabelsi whose shot at goal was punched away by the goal keeper, but only as far as Maduro, who made sure the ball went in to hand his side an important three points."

It must have been written by a Boukhari fan :D

He's right!

To the more ignorant football fans amongst us Boukhari's cross may have looked like a piss-poor attempt to finish, but that's probably because you are from England and are not used by the pure class and individual brilliance of Dutch football (total football and all that). It was actually a mathematically calculated cross via the body of the goalkeeper.

As for Trabelsi: it may have looked like he tapped the ball back to Maduro and did not shoot on goal at all, but it was in fact a rebouncing shot so hard that the human eye couldn't even see it bounce back to Maduro from Babos' fists.

Yes - we play futuristic football and this Sporting Life reporter is the only journalist in the world who seems to understand. For which I applaud him.

Ko, a friend of mine wants to interview you on his Dublin Radio show tonight.

Can you spare him a few minutes?

Let me know if you do it, I'd like to listen to the webcast.

Ta,

Mark.

Edit: just removed my e-mail address from the post. No problem that you posted it (not secret), but if I leave it up it will be picked up by spammers' search 'bots... Cheers, Menno

Not only you PC would like to listen - any clues as to where we will be able to follow this interview?

Here's the show...

http://www.newstalk106.ie/off_the_ball.htm

I've been interviewed on the show myself, (as a "football marketing guru" - HA!) Ger and Kenny are nice guys. Simon Kuper is also a regular contributer.

Anyway, on the Newstalk home page, is a 'Listen live' button to click for the live webcast.

All this came about after I started this rather depressed Ajax thread over one onetouchfootball...

Probably so. Unless he wants to talk about stuff I don't know anything about. What does he want to discuss? Yesterday's trouble?

I dropped Kenny an e-mail and copied you on it.

From the uefa.com website. Posted the day before the game...

*****************

Quiet confidence

Considering the rivals' form, Gullit was quietly confident, saying: "Under Danny Blind, Ajax have played one good game and three bad ones - you can take an average of that. Since the winter break we have played eight reasonable to good matches, and one very bad one, so you can also take an average of that."

****************

Arf...

Seems like arithmatical logic is not Ruud's strong suit.

For those who read Dutch... It's interesting to read a few of the Gullit related threads on www.lunaticnews.nl, the fanzine for Feyenoord diehards. They absolutely hate the guy - even when they were winning eight times in a row.

By the way: Ajax fans registered an alternative URL that will also link to the Lunatic News website: http://www.kakkerlakken.tk :D

Wow.

Hatred seems to be the only unifying force they have.

Why do they call Gullitt 'Dil' by the way?

Anybody know?
